My sister broke so many glass press pots that I finally got her one made of Lexan. It's encased in a steel cage for travel, but it just travels from her sink to her counter and back. I also got her a stainless steel travel mug sized one, for when she has to be at the gym and needs her caffeine. Guess what happened? She uses the travel mug press all the time lately! So, now she has 2 presses sitting on the already busy counter...

Mr.O! And I've been thinking you might be stuffy. Silly me. Now I think you're perfect!

I haven't even an idea of where James St. is! I am in a center off of Talmadge and Ethel. I'll get my map out tonight and chart everything. I wish the telephone books in New Jersey were more comprehensive! and now I want some curry.....

There are these little round savory rings we eat called Ka'ak. They are hard and crisp but not really a cracker.... my stepmother says they're easy to make, I don't know, since I've lost my Deal cookbook. (marked for his own by an otherwise sweet puppy years ago). Anyway, back to the topic, they're great with espresso or black coffee. Now that I think of it, cheese is boring. Jalapeno cornbread muffins, now that's great OK. I'll take a martini now... but actually, I'm having a glass of rum. And asking my date for next month to bring me some papas rellenos from Miami when he visits! edited because I don't 'think' very well right now, but I don't 'tinhk' for sure!

My favorite savory is papas rellenos, which is basically a ball of mashed potato filled with a picadillo(ground beef seasoned nicely) and rolled in breadcrumbs, then baked(or fried!). Then I also can devour a few lachm'a'jin.. a small round of pizza dough topped with a Syrian spiced ground lamb/onion/pine nut/tamarhindi mixture... heavenly! At our house we make savory breadsticks from quick yeast dough recipes and different seasonings or cheese mixed in. They're like portable seasoned chewy bread, so good! But, of course, tarts are good, too. Onion tarts, especially divine! Croissants, well, they're so messy, I always have to eat them with 2 napkins! I dislike that in a coffee shop, all those flakes~ Look, Ma, my food has dandruff! Of course then there are Greek Spinach turnovers, those are nice, but spinach in your teeth! All right, I'm done for now. If I smoked I'd need a cigarette after this bit.

OK, folks, here's today's report. I left my doctors at 2:30 and drove around until 4:10. I saw a lot of scenery, it was fascinating, especially the nice old homes in Bound Brook, Dunnelin, Metuchen, Piscatawney etc. etc. but I didn't get to eat a thing other than the apple in my purse BECAUSE I GOT LOST. And everyone I stopped for directions sent me in another fun direction! I never found anything of real interest, well, maybe the tiny town that had a second hand shop and a Mexican place, and there was some place that said Texas hot dogs, but I had a hot dog already this week, and I NEVER found OAK TREE ROAD! I finally found I-287 and headed home. I'm nutty to go anywhere in New Jersey without a map or a chaperone! Tonight we're having an appetizer of black bean/garlic/oregano/criollo adobo/soft cheese spread on cucumbers and NJ plum tomatoes and the main course is fresh steamed spinach with sauteed mushrooms and onion, served atop brown basmati rice steamed with saffron. I eat pretty well at home, so I'm forgiving myself for the long trek to nowhere today. See you in Metuchen next week, on Wednesday!(lucky MD is going to the Galapagos)

Bagels, huh? You know, I just realized that I've only lived on the East Coast of the USA for my entire life, I've always had access to good bagels. How quickly and economically can we ship them to France, I wonder? I mean, you've been so good to all of us...... and a bagel, it's a pity to do without.

Wegman's is good, it's like Starbucks to me. I adore it, but I don't go there exclusively. Besides, I've written to everyone about Wegman's, about my Saturday night visits with my nieces to the "wall of candy", my search for kosher blue cheese, because I'm allergic to the regular stuff; I need some new material!

I want everyone's leftovers.

PMS: Tell it Like It Is. Your cravings, Babe (Part 1)
Rebecca263 replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
If only my cravings were tied to my cycle! I have cravings every day! What's with you girls? Today I plan on having Indian food for lunch, but I'm craving a cheesecake..... and some pumpkin ricotta ravioli. Oh, well. Can I still be in the club? edited to add: PS: I mean, you let Fresser in, after all! -
This is really funny to us, because my car's name is Kim Chee Kia! He's wonderful, BTW, and he DOES repel folks sometimes.

Oh my holy oats! Now, once I figure out what Route 27 is and WHERE Highland Park is I think I'll be glad of my Tuesday excursions. The next ten weeks won't be so terrible after all! Thanks EVERYONE!

At least you didn't get five pounds of the little devils. Not that anyone WOULD do that, unless they were considered nutty. Yes, I admit it. I did just that. Kiddle talked me into it for a dinner party we had, she adores tiny onions. No Wild Turkey for Mommy, and kiddle was NO HELP peeling. I cooked them separately, because I wanted to retain the color in the 'purple' ones, but they were quite faded. It took me FOREVER to get them peeled! Still, a big hit at dinner! I served them alongside a gorgeous humongous rice pilaf (bunch of vegans that night, kooky artists ).... so good! We had steamed whole carrots at the table as well, and everyone decided to call it the dinner of sticks and stones! Gee, wish I had known about the hard cider bit, that sounds delicious!

Ah, doughnuts! I'm gearing up to make some next month! Yes, New Jersey towns are set up weirdly, I've noticed, circles and donuts and jughandle turns! Oak Tree Road, Oak Tree Road, Oak Tree Road... I'm having lunch at Chowpatty tomorrow!
-
Yay! My Tuesday mornings just got a silver lining! Edison, I'll have to go find that on the map too, I guess. I've heard of it, though. Indian food is the first stop, I'm sure. YUM!

Wow. Metuchen is hopping, I see. Guess I'll stick to bringing my lunch.

Forget it, spend the same money and buy one decent knife to start, and keep at it. Knives are worth the money, knives are worth the money, repeat after me.... it's like fine cookware, you pay for it once and it lasts or generations.

I'm visiting a medical center in Metuchen weekly(no, I'm still not all better, dagnab it!) for the next few months and I'm looking for interesting places to eat or buy food stuffs. Got any? I'm completely new to New Jersey and last week I drove through the parts of town that have cute old cottage homes....very pretty! However, I found nothing of note to eat other than take away Chinese (I chickened out and didn't go in) and a very low key bakery with fatty tasting pastry, next to a steamy laundromat...thanks in advance, my fellow eGulleters!

Are you a cow, or is that an acronym for something? ← my own opinion... usually, but here on eGullet, it COULD be just moo.

http://www.fedstats.gov/qf/states/34/34025.html AND http://www.visitmonmouth.com/econdev/video.asp Here are two links you can start with for your research. I really believe that this area is ripe for the picking. There are a lot of people with good amounts of disposable income and there is no world class bakery offering nearby. I know a number of people who order cakes from NYC for occasions, what a shame that they have to go to such lengths to have something wonderful. Wherever you end up, we'll all be rooting for you!

I just got back from lunch with a friend. I had a lovely glass of Mount Gay with raw sugar and a very generous slice of lime... the alternative was a pina colada, NOT my favorite thing!
-
Gee, Officer Krupke, I thought he was a SQUARE! Trust me, no one would ever find anything square about my personage, there's nothing but curves all around.... Today with lunch I had some Mount Gay with raw sugar and a slice of lime. I don't know which Mount Gay, but I remembered liking it before and when I was asked if I'd like a glass, well, how could I refuse? The only alternative was a pina colada, not my favorite thing. what's the consensus amongst you rum experts about Mount Gay? I LIKED it!

Hi! Here in the Manalapan/Marlboro neighborhood there is nothing of note other than a couple of Italian bakeries of average quality. My daughter and I researched a genuine buttercream for her birthday last month and we never did find anything of a high quality. We ended up a few towns over at a place named Mendoker's, decent but not a real buttercream. Also, lots of waxy chocolate icings around here. Bet you could blow anyone around here out of the water if you put your muscle into it.

I'm cooking with my sister, my lovely amazing sister! Yay! I DO want to move back to Miami ASAP, but I'm making the best of my time here in the frozen tundra that is New Jersey by spending as much time as possible with my sister and her family. This year, although we're not really doing a lot, we'll have 3 turkeys, just so that there will be a lot of leftovers, aren't we crazy? Kosher(we just like the way they taste), so no brining necessary. Each with different seasonings, all basted liberally, though. My partner in poultry overkill might make a ham, too, but that doesn't concern ME . We're making fresh green beans, hashu(meat and rice stuffing), bread stuffingfor the kids, garlic mashed yukon golds, sweet potatoes in a casserole, a huge mixed green salad with artichoke hearts, black olives, tomatoes and fresh chopped garlic, candied carrots, steamed vegetables (you name it, we stick it in the steamer), meat stuffing(sis is on a no carb diet this week ) and 'creamed' spinach. I'm undecided on dessert as yet, but there will be at least 4 bottles of good wine, red; and I don't care what people say about white with poultry. Maybe if we give the kids raspberries and strawberries with some sort of delicate cookie we'll call it a day. I'm bringing fresh cranberry sauce, but we secretly like the canned stuff, so that will be there, too.

This alone is so intriguing... do you feel a bit like Sartre, feeling something so different than everyone around you right now? I feel that we will have the best time following you this week, thank you!
