Dammit, Jaymes....trust you to be able to figure out how to put the squiggle on the "n"! I'm still searching for that at the top of my screen!!!!! Swamped by houseguests, including a 1-year -old....pray for me....

All them thar places are too damn cutesy for my liking. Try Artz Rib House on South Lamar . Great food, service and prices. ( also, live music on the weekends.) AND no Sandra Bullock either, which is a definite plus.

Two things.... I think our palates undergo a continuing education from the moment we are born. Some of us were lucky enough to be raised in families where food was celebrated and cooked well. I have fond memories of my mother's roast chicken and cabbage rolls. Perhaps whenever I eat those particular foods, I am subconsciously comparing them to her cooking? Ergo, my food standards are something I can't very well change without conscious effort. Secondly, I'm really glad that there are lots and lots of people out there who don't have a clue about good food and , besides, think that Hooters is gourmet stuff: makes it easier for me to get reservations at the good places!

I used to be uncontrollably attracted to carnation blooms. Ate them whenever I saw them in an arrangement. Or when I was given them. Sheesh....just had a thought....hope they weren't sprayed

My house, a chilly winter's day and a chicken slow-roasting in the oven. I brine it first, then stick sprigs of fresh rosemary throughout, scatter a couple dozen cloves of garlic around and douse it with white wine. My number one absolutely favorite food experience ( and also my children's)

Back in the mid-70's we used to drive to Laredo , walk across the border and bring back the two allowed bottles. We'd do this 2 or 3 times a day. I got hooked on Herradura....it cost $14 for 750 ml back then. Supposedly, when the Japanese discovered tequila, the price zoomed up. Does anyone know if this is true? I have heard that the agave plant is in trouble at the moment, so that real tequila production is limited. Has anyone heard that too?

"Drinking with Jaymes" is actually on my list of things to do .. Whatcha doin tonight, girl??

Apropos small doses... I find that when I am reading about food ( be it cookbook or narrative) I can't concentrate for more than half an hour or so. I wonder if there is a correlation with my preferring tasting menus as opposed to large portions of food? I literally get bored after a few bites and am ready to move on to new flavors. However.... I can read novels for hours on end...and I can eat a roast chicken until it's all gone! I just KNOW there is something in this worthy of psychological analysis!!!

MFK Fischer.....nothing like her on a hot summer's day in Texas, when you can't stop sweating and you're feeling sorry for yourself. Reading her essays about the Depression and keeping the Wolf from the door...and her enjoyment of food is such a delight. I only discovered her last year.....what a wonderful writer!

Jaymes, I've had jelly omelets...when you think about it, they're not far off from crepes, are they! I wanna eat at YOUR house!!!

Do not infuse fresh garlic in olive oil if you don't plan on using it within 24 hours. It can make you very sick.

I've heard that British food shows are better.

This thread is verging on the erotic.... Best meals I've ever eaten: at an outdoor seafood restaurant on the way to Pataya in Thailand. 8 courses of seafood, from huge crab legs to fragrantly steamed fish mousse wrapped in banana leaves. Also, in Apollo Bay in southern Australia: a restaurant owned by a Greek fellow ( could it be Kris??), high up on a mountainside overlooking the Pacific. The owner had framed acrylics by Dame Edna on the wall. We had a wonderful meal which ended with house made sorbets and cookies on a plate decorated with passionfruit blossoms from the garden outside.

Is Lola's still around??( across the street from Whole Foods. ) I had a great paella there about 5 years ago.... Also , I like Horst Pfeiffer at Bella Luna....he can cook

Bella Luna on the water....the chef is Horst Pfeiffer,. who is the youngest German ever to receive their master chef designation. Apart from that, he is really hot....cute as a button. Very romantic location. He has an herb garden in the walled garden of the nunnery ( or is it a monastery?) across the street, by the way.

I think Holiday House's lease expires some time in the next few years. It's outrageous that a Houstonite can do what she has done to my neighborhood. So many elderly people relied on the Grocery for their meals...I've fantasized about putting out a contract on her.....

I loved Formosa: I could walk to it from my house. They had a $4.99 lunch special. No there's almost nothing left in that shopping center, since the landlady is a strict vegetarian and won't allow any meat-using restaurants. We think that the shoe hospital is the next to be thrown out. It's all very sad By the way, fitz: I taught the 7/10 olive oil class.....Jaymes was there.

How many meals do you cook at home each week?
foodie52 replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
The only times we eat out is if one of us has a margarita/enchiladas craving! Otherwise, since I work in a specialty foods store, we eat at home all the time: who can resist the lure of raw, fresh meat/seafood and produce?? So I shop every day after work and cook whatever looks appealing to me. We've lately enjoyed the Copper River salmon. -
I don't know about y'all, but I watch these guys and think, "I could do that..." How DO you get on TV, huh? How come nobody mentions Tyler Florence?
-
Hmmmm....Spudboy: you must also hang out with Will Packwood. Why don't you and Willl and Sam open up a restaurant here, for heaven's sake? I saw Sam the other day and he told me about a live tofu/fish dish you guys ate in Korea.Wanna share that experience with everyone here? Claire: I'm at the north Central Market: have been there 6 years. Let's all get together, OK?

El Arroyo on West 5th has good breakfast tacos....good texmex overall, in my humble opinion.

Thursday's Cottage ( English ) Bitter Orange marmalade is great. I also like any kind of blackcurrant jam: Vavel ( Polish line) does a good inexpensive one. Hero ( Swiss ) jams are always good.
