  1. I can't believe I am mentioning this because it probably doesn't exist anymore... In 1979 we stayed in Manarola. There was a restaurant located right on top of the railway tunnel going through town. The actual kitchen was across the road, but the dining area ( outdoors) was on top of the tunnel. Every night the Rome express would barrel through and all conversation would have to stop. We found the restaurant in tne Guide Michelin. At the time, it had one star. It may be long gone, but I have my fondest food memories from that place.
  2. Is Lola's still open ( across the street from Whole Foods)? We had great paella and garlic soup there around 6 years ago.
  3. Six years ago at Emeril's in NO, a seven course tasting menu, three wines, cigars and brandy came to about $200 per person. Luckily I wasn't paying. Last October, I forked over a $100 bill at Craft. And left hungry, but impressed. Oh well!
  4. OK; Joe's is at 1201 East 6th....not 1206. There is apparently a big picture of the chef on the side of the building. East side of the freeway, and north side of the street....sure hope the directions I was given are right, but it won't be that hard to find. Jaymes and I are eating there tomorrow at 11 am. I'm going to the Farmers' Market first to check it out. fun fun fun!!
  5. If you crave smoke in public places, you can always move to Europe.
  6. You payin'?If so , I will gladly share my opinion!!! Not sure now that I want to fork out the bucks for this place. Joe's restaurant is at 1206 East 6th.....on the north side of east 6th, on the east side of the freeway. Anybody up for soul food Saturday lunch? I don't have to be at work til 2:00....
  7. I just like them because they are tidy little entrees. I brine mine as soon as I get them home. When ready to cook, I rinse, slather with orange marmalade mixed with soy sauce and sherry and pop them in the over. I like nibbling their little bones, so it's a treat for me. However, I won't serve them to guests anymore: just family. I feel like an Neanderthal when I eat them!
  8. Toasted English muffin, warm out of the toaster, slathered with butter and Tate & Lyle's Golden Syrup. After you eat it ,you are required to lick the remaining butter/syrup mess off the plate. This also works in a thin flour tortilla or crepe if you happen to have one handy.
  9. Poussins are smaller than game hens....we sell them both where I work. A game hen can feed two people....poussins only one. We carry poussins for people who need to eat things with names that they cannot pronounce. I think it is a status thing. You English egulleteers should be able to enlighten us about the Cornish thing...why are they called Cornish? Are they from Cornwall? And speaking of Cornwall, does anyone except myself remember a radio show in England in the 60's where some character would just jump in and mouth,'Cornwallllllll"? Am I insane?
  10. Yeah, but who cares what the masses say? I rely more on you guys for recommendations! Someone at work told me about a new soulfood restaurant at the corner of 6th and Waller Creek ( I think...) He says it's really good ( this guy is Black, lives on the east side and his mama is a fabulous cook!) He's bringing me the menu tomorrow. Can't remember the name of it offhand, but I will report back, maybe in the get-together thread? Apparently the chef used to be head chef at the Motorola plant on Ed Bluestein ( don't laugh...I taught there for 2 years, and the cafeteria food was excellent). He makes his own desserts.... My friend, Charlie, says that the food is wayyyyy better than Hoover's ( which I don't care for, anyway.) More as this develops!! By the way....I give Crimson ....6 months....whatdayasay?
  11. Who the hell are you anyway, Big Boy??? We ain't never heard a peep from you til now. Reveal yo sorry self immediately!! (And join us May 23rd when we go out to eat as egulleteers...) Or are you too scaired????
  12. No, but I met their pastry chef in a cooking class last week! First I'd heard of it. Do we have to go???
  13. Gosh, I'm sorry....maybe "curmudgeon" was the wrong word here. My apologies.
  14. "Why does your fruitsalad always contain canned pineapple?" he asked dolefully. AND: "Que syrah, syrah", she murmured fruitily. That's my last one, I promise. Good night
  15. "Your knives need sharpening,"she said pointedly, her steely eyes flashing.
  16. "You always complain about my coffee," he observed bitterly. (Had enough yet, Maggie?)
  17. "Hot dogs? I don't give a damn...." she said frankly. (Think about this one.....)
  18. She icily admonished the waiter, "Sorbets are served between courses."
  19. "Life is short...eat two desserts first", he said expansively.
  20. Or we can focus on the curmudgeons and analyse why CduM upsets them so much..... There are food experiences on many levels: if I enjoy the CduM experience and want to talk about it, it's OK ....so while you're mulling that over, have a cup of coffee and a beignet.
  21. I like Grapevine Mkt. I buy most of my wine at CM because Seth knows what I like and can afford. But Grapewine is special ( and I love their tequila selection!) I attended a Chilean wine class last night. One of them was yummy ( to my palate). It's the De Bosier Pinot Noir, Casa Blanca Valley 2001. And it runs $9.99. Check it out! Ya know, another egullet thing we could do, would be to have a private wine class. I could get Seth to teach it for us. We could do it at my house: we'd rely on Seth to choose the wines ( we could choose the country or varietal )and he'd walk us through them. I'd make food to accompany the wines.Sound like fun?
