  1. Here, it was STEAK AND ALE... It was the classiest restaurant in town back in 1976.

    DQ Blizzards

I have a friend here whose inlaws owned the very first DQ in Texas. We only go to them when we are on a road trip to someplace far, like Alpine or El Paso. Lots of the small towns have DQ's and no place else to eat. You drive through, (remembering to go less than 30 mph because the cops are crazy bored there), and hit the DQ. Unfortunately, I 've seen a real decline in upkeep of these places. We sometimes wonder if DQ is on the way out in rural areas...that would be such a shame. Usually the fixtures are old, the building is old and almost beyond repair, and the Blizzard machine is broken. Anyone remember the Breeze? It was a short-lived low-cal blizzard. Can't find it any more.
  3. Sorry you had a long wait, but on the other hand, I'm delighted the place was busy!! As business picks up, I bet they'll hire more people. I only hope they can stay in business. Please spread the word...
  4. Send leftovers.....
  5. Hey, Tommy, how come you're not going? I have your martini glass, by the way.
  6. Be still my heart....
  7. What the hell are you doing eating one of those anyway, claire 797? You must weigh all of 100 lbs....come and see me: I'll give ya some Valrhona.... We sell lots and lots of this low carb stuff . The store I work in has an entire section dedicated to the low carb thingy. And my observation is that people want it...they just WANT it , and don't care how it tastes! They put it in their grocery carts and not a one has yet to ask me if this stuff tastes good! And while I'm ranting, what's up with this coconut oil craze??? Some magazine says it's supposed to help women's thyroids, so I've had about a million requests for this out-of-stock item in the past 6 weeks. Mostly from very overweight women. Is it the new miracle drug??? Huh????
  8. Hey, Austin egulleteers! There's a new place called Babbo's in 26 Doors , at 35th , just across from Seton Hospital. Check it out. It's owned and run by Matthew Lee: his mom runs the CM cooking school in Houston. Matthew has his recipes down! His gianduja gelato is to die for, as was the melon ( imagine pairing a melon gelato with some prosciutto....) The coffee is excellent: it's not the canned coffee variety. Ask him about where he gets his beans. I stop in every morning on my way to work for an espresso. I really want his business to make it, purely for selfish reasons! Try it out. Tell them I sent you.
  9. All round favorite breads comes from Upper Crust Bakery at 45th and Burnet Rd. But they don't do sourdough: funnily enough, the two guys who run the bakery, shop at Central Market for their sourdough bread needs! Whole Foods has an amazing loaf called Seeduction Loaf: it's full of seeds and stuff and has a wonderful texture and flavor. It's very earthy. Central Market does artisanal breads quite well....the ciabatta is always good, as are the breakfast breads. Their challah is good, too. Nobody does baguettes well in this town. I think it must be the humidity.
  10. My German grandmother's laundress in the 30's didn't fold the linen tablecloths: she rolled them up so that there wouldn't be any creases. When my grandmother died, we got rid of all the tablecloths except one. You need SERVANTS to maintain that level of gentility!
  11. I wish I could come...
  12. Why...thank you, Suzanne! I am truly flattered!
  13. Good lord! This is a serious foodie here! I am really impressed. By the way...the UT Business school is one of the best in the country...so if you have the option to come here, AND be part of the egullet group, ... WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM?????????????? Move down here asap!
  14. Two years and $33,000 later, Undercover Agent Gladys realizes that she attended the wrong CIA...
  15. If I just concentrate and keep quiet, nobody will notice that I'm not wearing pants.
  16. And remember: a special order from Central Market is only an email away!!!!
  17. Shame it's not BYOB!!
  18. Is Sam allowed to receive care packages? (Or is this a really stupid question?)
  19. Manarola....summer 1979 for me. We stayed with an elderly English couple who allowed the local restauranteur to rent out their two spare rooms in exchange for fabulous dinners in his restaurant. So the couple ate for free, and the chef got some income from the rental! I don't remember the name of the restaurant: all I remember is that we found it in the Guide Michelin( it had one fork at the time) , and that the actually dining area was outdoors and located precisely on top of the railway tunnel. The Rome express would barrel through every evening: all conversation would stop, and then resume! Fresh anchovies, caught in the morning and then served with olive oil and lemon.....gamberi: huge prawns, char-grilled.... seafood risotto....local wine and the kicker: schiaciatra ( sp?) the fortified after-dinner drink! We'd stagger back up the hill to our room, watch the twinkling lights of the fishing boats and be perfectly content. I first went to the Cinqueterre in 1963 with my parents. When I revisited in 1979, it had not changed...but there were hardly any tourists.
  20. Wow: it' s getting almost too complicated for me. I was just gonna do basic lettering on the front, with a big ole pig and somehow incorporate the egullet logo into it if possible I wanted to keep the cost down so that each shirt wouldn't cost me more than $7. ( I may be hung with the remainders, after all...) I was gonna charge $10 for each one, to cover the cost of my shipping. But go for it....if you can come up with something , do it. But let's not let it cost a hind and a haunch.....we're all spending enough just getting out there! So let me know what y'all decide
  21. Pages and pages of Peeps information???/ What's there to say about them??? I certainly opened a can of Peeps with this thread!
  22. We'll be in St Louis this coming week and are searching for ultimate St Louis style BBQ !! Now, it will have to be exceptional to beat what we are used to on a daily basis here in Austin, but I bet there is someplace of note Any ideas?
  23. OK: we are coming from Texas! Am bringing the lawyer husband ( didn't one of y'all want one to talk to ???) Am bringing tequila, t-shirts and cash donation. Will cost out the t-shirts: am thinking of having 50 made, all large and x-large. Will that do? Then I can get them shipped to the hotel so I don't have to unfold every one at the airport and then be denied a seat and held in custody because Security thinks I'm a nut case. Will be making our hotel reservations tomorrow. Varmint: you're a crazy man doing this. But how I admire you!!! Can't wait to meet ya!
  24. I'm looking into having t-shirts made: Pigstock '03 with a big ol' hog on the back. If I make a couple dozen, will y'all buy one? It'll pay for my trip!!!!!
