  3. We wandered aimlessly through Marienplatze for a while and watched the famous Glockenspiel, then headed south towards where I thought the museums were. Then we took a train a few stops and walked right back to the beginning, then the kids found someone with a map and we all went to the Neu Pinakothek. The kids raced through and headed across the street to the Modern (1 euro museum day) Back to the hotel to freshen up for which we also took the long way around to find T
  4. We all managed to make our way down there by about 10 am and ordered up some coffees, Coke Light, and yummies like Ham and Brie Panini, muffins and Chocolate Almond Croissants to fortify our trip to Marienplatz and the museums T
  5. I had hoped to do this live during the actual trip but internet access in the room was 107 Euros for the week. But since there seems to be nothing scheduled you are stuck with me .... In December '06 as we showed off our Paris and Munich photos, my M-I-L said she wished she could travel like us. She said if she went to Europe she would have to go on an old people tour and didn't want to do that. So began the planning, we would take her to Munich in a year. Then of course we should take our 22 yr old Daughter, and if he can spring for himself her Boyfriend. Now we have 5 people and thats no good so we add my B-I-L. May 23rd we take off for Heathrow from Newark NJ to brave Terminal 5. Our in-flight meal was chicken something with a cold dinner roll, salad, citrus pie, and maybe something chocolate. Breakfast a few hours later was asst tea sandwiches - chicken salad and ham with mustard sauce. I dont know why we east this stuff, but it's so like...ooooh goody a diversion. After landing in London we are herded to terminal 5 for our connecting flight at which point we find out you can't go outside (yes I smoke) with out collecting your bags (which are checked through to Munich) and going through passport control with Biometric screening. There we sit for 6 hours watching the trash and scraps and crumbs of society pile up around us...that place was Filthy and no one cleaned it in at least 6 hours. A 1 hour flight and we are in Munich, where a 35 min train ride takes us directly to the lobby of the Hilton. While I took a long hot bath my B-I-L went on a beer mission and did some scouting in the neighborhood. The kids headed off to the Carnival he found and the rest of us took a walk to look for a place for dinner. After exploring for about an hour we settled on an outdoor table at Topgaste Restaurant Augustiner. Our waitress was excellent and we had lots of fun translating the menu. We ordered for the table a dish of Kase Spaetzle which came as an app...Spaetzle mixed with a cheese sauce topped with carmelized onions and a mound of crispy bacon...Amazing,,,We also had 2 orders of Schnitzle, a Sausage Stew with a sauce similar to Sauerbratten and ...of all things a Turkey and Mushroom stuffed baked Potato with a sour cream spiked brown sauce. We were fat, happy and in Germany...too dark no pictures Bright and early the next morning we met up at Cafe' Cino in the lobby.... tracey

    Dinner! 2008

Grilled "boneless pork ribs" with a warm grilled Yukon Gold Potato, Asparagus, and Spinach salad with a Lemon Dijon dressing I grilled the Asparagus and sliced potatos then cut them into a bowl over the fresh spinach to wilt and added the dressing at the last min....could have used some cayenne or something but quite tasty tracey
  7. I will take mine warm please...I only know how to make a hotel pan's worth but after its taken off the heat a few eggs are stirred in for richness and to help thicken A flame tamer of some sort really helps for stovetop recipes, at the deli I used to make it at we stacked 2 burner grates under the pot tracey
  8. The supermarkets there also did not refrigerate their eggs.... that was the only dish on the whole trip that no one else got a bite of every other meal there were forks flying but she kept those eggs pretty close to her T
  9. I dont know how many other airports are doing this now but we just had a pair of layovers at Heathrow...and you can not leave the airport if you have checked baggage. To leave you must go through customs with your bags and then go through security when you come back. All of which could take a few hours. Made my day to spend 6 hours in a filthy Terminal 5 tracey

  13. This is the Balsamico...and a brief explanation. The "real" stuff is sold only in that size and shape of bottle. It is tasted by a panel before bottling to make sure it is good enough to be called Tradizionale Its really good drizzled on strawberries or vanilla icecream, or a nice slice of bread with a chunk of cheese http://www.amazon.com/Aceto-Balsamico-Trad...11141759&sr=1-1
  14. I usually turn the heat up....(forced hot air) and open the window over the stove yes there is a window right over my stove, gas stove, no curtains tracey
  15. a bottle of Balsamico Tradizionale...the real stuff 95.00 to 100.00 but its fun to have especially going inot summer with all the fresh fruit coming tracey
  16. RubyRed...home made was my first thought when tasting the Angus burger....like something left on the grill when you are late to a party. Big dry burger on a big dry bun. Much prefer a regular McD grease bomb Everyone else on the chicken sandwich....keep your damn condiments Finally something I can order through the drive through... It really has no ketchup or mayo or freaky pink goo...YAY tracey I have a free coupon for biscut and sandwich to use up
  17. Smoked fish on gridled buckwheat blini Eggplant, potato, and goat cheese tort or tart or stack with smoked tomato sauce Rhubarb crumble with pecan topping Creme fraiche with the Blini and the Dessert tracey

    Dinner! 2008

Hey Tupac! I havent seen you in over a year.. Hope all is well.. Really pretty looking dish.. Can you tell me a little about your Quatre épices.. Thanks, Daniel! I had been AWOL from this thread for quite a while. And it's not like I haven't been cooking! Re: the quatre épices... it was a mixture of black pepper, nutmeg, clove and cinnamon. Not sure about the proportions since I picked it up on a recent trip to Paris (needed a pinch to re-create the Arpège egg), but judging from the aroma and flavor I'd guess they're roughly equal parts. Dusted both the potatoes and the duck with it. The potatoes I pan-fried in a cast iron skillet with some rendered duck fat; and I thought they turned out great. I thought the duck could've used a little extra something, though. I added a touch of sherry vinegar to the pan sauce at the end, but once I tasted the final product, I thought it needed the depth of another seasoning (cumin, for some smokiness, maybe?) much more than it needed the brighter acidity that the vinegar brought. It's a dish I'll keep playing with, I think. Next time with chicken. ← I have been using sherry vin and cherry preserves to finish off duck lately and it is a beautiful thing tracey

  23. We stopped in on Saturday, nice cheese selection and if we werent just starting a day of errands I would have grabbed some of the Vitamia pasta and perhaps some Cia Bella, Key lime with graham cracker looked good. I asked the kid at the bakery counter if the product was from Plaza Sweets but he only knew the distributors name...pretty sure it was Plaza Sweets product though I kept my distance from the lemon bars Mmmm. We requested a Lindemans product and hubby got some beer and we were off. Be back soon though. tracey
