  1. Steelhead Diner at the Pike Place Market has been getting good brunch reviews.
  2. This last month has been all about prunes - that is the fresh one also called Italian plums. Just a few left on the tree, but the freezer is stuffef with halves, so I will continue the fest for a few more months. The most recent was individual brown butter cakes with a half fruit nestled into the dough before baking. Served with ice cream and fresh plum compote.
  3. Mario raved about Steelhead on Serious Eats. seriously
  4. We needed a late night (after movie) spot. The town is dark! Bamboo Garden, closed, Sea Garden, the sign says open, the help is seated and eating, we don't try. Managed to get in at Seastar at 10 - they graciously sat us and offered to send one more order to the kitchen. We didn't order a lot, but they delivered - food and service, and validated parking. Lots of flavor in the seafood preps. The diner menu is pretty spendy, but I would try this place again, maybe lunch, if I am ever in need, or a nice pre-movie bite in the bar.

    La Panzanella

It only makes me sad to think that the original bakery is no more and the crackers are made under contract (if I understand how it goes.)
  6. You got 16 ga, she got 16 ga. You got 30" x 18" bowl, she got 29-1/2" x 16-1/4". She paid $210, you paid...? You dismiss all kitchen designers based on experience with 2? Nice. ← Purchasing a product based on price alone is not a wise thing to do. So much for kitchen designers. ← Hey Dick - I didn't say I was a kitchen designer. I just commented on the difference in price between the two sinks, and then commented on your dimissal of kitchen designers. The two points were not related. It's like saying all people of any group are a waste of time because you had a bad experience, be they doctors, accountants, teachers, designers, or chefs. Maybe you were unable to communicate what you wanted. Maybe your choices work for you and everyone you know really wants to know what you were thinking? Some really smart people (and not so smart) have no spatial intelligence. They can really make a mess of a room layout. Based on do-it yourself remodels I've seen in open houses through the years, plenty of people could use design assistance. And yes, I have seen professionally designed spaces that don't work either. Point: I'd like to see broad stroke condemnation left out of these threads. I suppose I should be nicer one on one as well, but this just pushed my buttons.
  7. sugar cubes - preferably those rough brown ones - A La Perruche Brown Sugar Cubes. cinnamon toast mexican chocolate (thoughI currently have Guatemalan open - much easier to break - they are flat disks) frozen fruit chunks handful of granola
  8. Snark attack - of those places, the only one I would eat in is Red Mill - and I am not even a burger fan. Maybe Kidd Valley, for a milkshake. Mae's and Mama's? Not even for free, and probably not even if you paid me.
  9. Are you going to tell us what cabinets you bought?
  10. Make sure you have reservations to go to Bloedel - they are mandatory. Secret Garden in Ballard is a kid's bookstore, not a gardening one, just so you know.

  12. Everytime I tried, they were closed. I gave up. Have you tried Pig Iron in Georgetown?
  13. If you decide on Lampreia, consider ordering everything but the entrees. There is a great deal of interesting fare, but not in that course. I still haven't been to Mistral, so I can't weigh in. Union has some great food. You might consider Cafe Juanita - though maybe not the same food experience. I know I will get roasted, but I love Tilth - you can get some fabulous food there - but it isn't all that fancy. Veil? Anyone been lately? Ask for the corner table facing the sound at Steelhead Diner, and ask Kevin to make you a special dinner. It's not perfect, but they really try to please and I love the appetizers and desserts.
  14. Georgetown Truck Stop. A young couple runs the place - standard fare but with a twist. Impressive sandwiches, salads, pastry (made there!) Lots of tables on the lawn with a view of the sugar sign. Good coffee. Lots of tlc - the side of fruit made me think of Raison d'Etre, though not quite. Still/ Inexpensive, filling and very tasty. Calamity Jane's Great place to go with a dozen friends on a Friday night. Food and drink flowed for 2 hours and the total bill was $200. Really good food - lots of variety, interesting drinks, great service, and 'tude. Two Tartes - lunch deals are great, and the everything cookies are all you can ask for. Maruta Grocery Thank heavens for high quality $6.00 sushi plates to go! There is a new vegan place, Squid Ink (?) How is it possible that so many vegan friendly places ended up in this area? Haven't tried it or GLC.
  15. Make friends with Hans down the street at Arosa. He knows the numbers - and he just sells a couple of items - he has mad swings in sales, but I know he gets orders for 50 waffles or 20 sandwiches (or was it 50) onve a week on a weekly basis - for one customer. If the product is good (and I know it is!) - the docs will love you and so will the legit drug sales people (the non-legit you'll deal with anyway.)
  16. I was thinking of the Bellagio cases as well. Those are just standard tube steel and glass dividers attached to the counter, with the open case you want. Great way to get around the health department issue. Something similar is used for raw bars/fish displays (I know of the one at SeaGrill in Tacoma.) Sorry, don't know the manufacturer, but I bet Smith and Greene Restaurant supply does.
  17. I saw the tortilla robot in action in the lobby of Torrero's at Factoria. That was pretty cool. The tortillas weren't bad either.
  18. Just like the first one on Capitol Hill. Great pizza, good people. What more do you need to know?
  19. Give yourself a good rest. Then, buy a cookware thing you always wanted but couldn't justify and play with getting to know it. Or buy some ridiculously expensive ingredients. Take a class. Travel somewhere new with a cuisine. But what do I know - I rarely cook anymore myself - alpha chef in the house has made it seem silly for me to bother. Too busy anyway.
  20. I'd gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today. Often quoted. Let's see, something original...nope, not much to add here. But I do love the elusive Macrina brioche hamburger buns when I do eat them.
  21. Salad of frisee with poached egg Roasted asparagus topped with fried egg and reggiano eggs poached in a nice chicken stock
  22. I think there are many weekend happy hours, including Brasa 5-7 nightly: http://www.brasa.com/menus/brasa%20bar%20menu.pdf Union's lovely bar menu is 5-7 and 10-midnight. Vessel is across the 5th from the hotel. Happy hour 4-6 daily. I don't think they are open on Sundays. BOKA has early and late happy hours M-F. Taste at SAM has 3-6 happy hour - all bar snacks $5. Closed Monday. http://www.tastesam.com/docs/taste_bar.pdf All are a bit more elegant than party.
  23. I searched for the thread, but it must be buried within another. I know we have discussed if there is a decent slice in town. I finally sucumbed to the lure of the cake dome at Geraldine's Counter. It's an old fashioned 3 layer cake, with a chocolate buttercream filling/frosting served with a very yellow vanilla ice cream and a squeeze of chocolate sauce. I think it is devil's food. Not overly sweet. The crumbs break down nicely into the ice cream. This is my best (worst?) find in a long time.
  24. I wouldn't call these cracker like - the quality of the dough is generally outstanding (helps to have your own bakery I think) and my last pie had a nice ratio of char, bubble, and chew to the crust.
  25. Pig Iron BBQ is pretty good. I just heard Marco Polo (tavern on 4th) has good food. There is an Alki Bakery. Calamity Jane's has a good sounding menu. Muy Macho is a bit of a drive - enjoyed the tacos - 3 may be enough - don't get fooled by the 5 taco platter - each is $1.00 no matter how many you order. I liked the Pollo best, much to my surprise. I just noticed a Thai restaurant in a stand alone building on 6th just South of Lucille. By's Drive In has my attention. As does Kauai Family on 6th S. Is Planet Georgetown still there? How about The Hangar Cafe? (Who has noticed that I moved and changed jobs in the past year?)
