    Pho

ohhh... where? there are so many pho places in boston, i've been trying to find a little 'mom and pop' pho place in chinatown, but somehow always end up going to pho pasteur.....
  6. It's true. Metal has a greater rate of thermal expansion than glass, when you run it under hot water the lid expands more than the glass jar. Similarly, when it's cold the metal lid contracts more than the glass, which is why jars from the fridge are so hard to open.
  7. the first time he cooked for me was last spring break- almost two years after we started dating (he hates cooking). it consisted of thick cuts of beef marinated overnight in PAPS Blue Ribbon which he diligently carried across the Charles River via bus from his room to mine, garlic mashed potatoes with pockets of goat cheese that he didn't quite blend through washed down with a bottle of red wine we had stolen from a semiformal at his house a year before and topped off with some Cadbury milk chocolate straight from England.
  8. Very nice blog... wonderful pictures of mouthwatering food btw, i second abra's inquiry for an elaboration on cooking congee in a rice cooker.
  9. wow... such beautiful pictures
  10. slbunge- how was Sea to You? I'm planning on checking it out next Saturday for fish to use in sashimi. Any suggestions or impressions?
  11. yesterday i ate 4 pieces of toasts drenched in grade A maple syrup and two pickles for lunch....
  12. self-cleaning blender- would make me much more inclined to whip up some smoothies and such
  13. it's pronounced "xian" which means divine or godly since in a lot of folklore people who lived in the mountains had special divine powers
  14. yum yum yum i love chinese sausages cut into slices and steamed on top of the rice cooker...makes for a very easy and tasty meal
  15. hmm... too bitter for me my mom used to buy it from the chinese grocery in cans and make us drink it in the summers

    Whats your take?

kimchi definitely isn't limited to just cabbage, it can be a variety of other pickled vegetables including radish and cucumber
  17. ouch... never had that happen before.... i've found at haymarket that it depends on the stall, some sellers just hand you a bag and let you pick for yourself and others will let you if you ask nicely. i try to avoid those who yell at you for touching their "display" produce, it usually means that the ones they have in the back are not so good. but with haymarket prices you gotta take the bad with the good...
  18. what's that? (sorry, stupid question)
  19. yummy.... i can't wait to eat the zongzi my sister brought me from home when she came to visit me! my mom makes them the triangular pyramid way with fatty pork or red beans... on another note, all this talk is making me wonder whether I should start learning how to cook/make those traditional chinese dishes that my generation only knows by taste. it would be sad if the art of zongzi-making was lost. on the other hand, my culinary skills are so rudimentary i think i should try something easier to start with, like hard-boiled eggs.
  20. awww... so sweet! still searching for my moment....
  21. those pictures were enough to make me drool all over my keyboard... congrats (belated) on the job in vegas! btw... what happens to all those yummy desserts you make in pastry school? do they get sold? eaten by the students?
  22. you're going to the right place for food in boston, there are lots of places on Newbury St. and Boylston within a twenty minute walk from Boston Commons. Try Abe & Louie's for steak or Atlantic Fish Co. for seafood that's better than Legal. Both are on Boylston btw Fairfield and Exeter (by the Prudential Tower). For somewhere slightly cheaper try Vinny T's which is towards Mass Ave. on Boylston for Italian.
  23. my mom used to dice up green tomatoes and sautee them with green chile peppers, the sourness of the tomatoes goes great with the spicy peppers
  24. Right across from China Pearl is another Dim Sum place called Peach Farm which is really good as well, and I think slightly less expensive. Searching on Boston.com's food and dining section for places in Chinatown can give you some more ideas.
