  1. I like sesame and pomegranate. The rest on the list doesn't move me. Anise flavour is particularly distasteful to my palate.
  2. I love my mom's green bean casserole. I think the ease and economy of the dish was the main reason it turned up every year at my maternal family's christmas gatherings. I've never been served it at any other xmas/holiday events though - outside of my family. It's definitely not done by everybody. I wonder if it's more prevalent in the northeast? I don't think I'd eat anyone else's but my mom's - it's actually a pretty gross recipe, but she has the magic touch. lol To wit: -frozen green beans -can of campbell's cream of mushroom soup -frozen onion rings combine beans and soup, put in casserole dish. place onion rings on top in a neat pattern. Put in oven. ~Radio
  3. We-ell, I'm a clock-wise person I guess. I just go wherever's convenient for shopping, so I'm used to store doors being in all different directions. I've never thought about this aspect before. I've read articles about this in the past. In particular, I find endcaps pretty darn annoying - they barely ever list prices on the things! That's just evil, man. I went to a store the other day and travelled all over heck's half-acre trying to find the honey. One would assume it'd be near the pb, jam, spreadables-type stuff. Finally, I found an employee who showed me to the baking aisle - there were two types of honey on the highest shelf, tucked away amongst assorted other baking supplies. That's kind of annoying. But generally, I feel savvy enough to know that they try and direct shoppers to the most expensive products, things they want to get rid of, etc. I go in there focused like I'm on a mission. Don't buy anything w/out a coupon unless it's vital or a special occasion. When I have the chance, I wear headphones and listen to my own music - so I don't have to endure 'the greatest hits of Peter Cetera' or whatever. Oh - one other thing - the mini tvs they have in each Ralph's checkout line are really over the top.....but I'll save you my anti-tv rap. ~Radio
  4. "Gingerbread ice cream sandwiches." Oh wow! I have to try this!
  5. You are already making me well homesick, sir Your photographs are gorgeous....If only EG had a 'taste-o-vision' option! cheers, Radio
  6. Putting ketchup on macaroni and cheese. Way to kill the yummy cheesey flavour!
  7. Saran Wrap boxes got me. Twice. I used to buy cheapo brands, and one night was trying to rip the sheet off on the serated edge - the box flew up and sliced my eyebrow. Scar #1. Not too long after, I was having the same problem and the box flew off to the side - the serated edge gashed my right-hand wrist to the bone. Ooooh pretty colors.... Those 2 incidents are hopefully the worst kitchen injuries I'll ever have. Oh, and I now buy name-brand Saran Wrap only.
  8. I saw a gingerbread/macademia biscotti at Starbucks today that looked yummy. I like a half black coffee/half egg nog on Xmas morning. I dig the gingersnaps. I like a really good Yule log (NO wet centres like the ones of my youth!) green bean casserole (the kind made from green beans, crm of mushroom soup, and onion rings. YUM) A chocolate santa to bite the head off of (just like the easter bunny) Homemade cookies. As a kid, I remember being excited about the annual shrimp ring. Things I don't like: fruitcake marzipan rock-hard gingerbread house. candy canes. (unless they're in candycane ice cream)
  9. As to (my beloved) Fresca, they reformulated it recently - it now comes in Peach or Cherry flavour. And it's vile.
  10. Woohoo! Another EG'er enters the L.A. fold! Hiya Neal I reccommend heading down to Manhattan Beach, say on a sunday morning, having breakfast/lunch at "The Kettle", then spending time on the beach. It's lovely out there. Also, at the end of the pier is a small aquarium(all sorts of fish). The Kettle is a popular diner, it's located at 1138 Highland Ave. Also, just a couple blocks away is "Uncle Bill's" a tiny cottage that makes great pancakes. Have fun! ~Radio
  11. I would like to suggest a lovely Garlicky Caesar Salad. I haven't seen one of those on a blog for a while. mmmm Garlic!!
  12. Great blog you two! I can't tell what the creature is in Kris' plant though: "I discovered a friend living in my sudachi tree" Is it a caterpillar of some kind? I see a pair of eyes, but can't make out the body of the creature - it blends with the plant so seamlessly.
  13. I just wanted to add: Don't forget, coupons! I see a number of baking-related coupons in the sunday newspaper from week to week. I'll second the Trader Joe's vote also. cheers!
  14. My goodness, what a handsome devil! It does sort of remind me of a rutabega...
  15. Wow Wow Wow. I really do miss Vancouver. It's so nice to see pics from there. Which area are you in? I've never heard of Kolachy - but it looks YUM! What do they do with the insides of the bread? I have a question: which restaurant/food establishment do you frequent the most? Not necessarily your 'favorite', but the one you most regularly patronize. As for the cat, I vote for "Princess Buttercup" - dainty! lol.
  16. I haven't seen an ad for this, but am excited. What part of the country are you in? I hope I get to try it!
  17. When I was living in England, I was surprised to find that mayonnaise could be kept in a cool dark cupboard. So that's what I do. Ketchup, mustard, salad dressing, syrups - all of these I keep in the cupboard also. It seems to be working fine. My mom used to keep butter in the cupboard. And bread. That's all I can think of.
  18. The menu looks great! I'm coming, and bringing a guest.
  19. How about topping it with a few large koi goldfish origami? Or maybe some other sort of brightly colored origami.
  20. Wow. I am in awe. I'll be coming back home to Van. on a visit this july - I get to see my best friend and everything - for the first time in approx. 7-8 years. Clearly, 'C' should be on my list, though I'm a bit afraid of the cost! lol Those food pics look beyond perfect! I hope I can get a meet up going, once I have the date I'll have to post. I would so very much like to meet you all, and get some rec's.
  21. Another vote here for the original version of McD's apple pie. YUM. I really liked their milkshakes when I was a little kid. Then like 10yrs ago they changed the formula. Took me a bit to get used to it, but I don't mind anymore. The 'treat-ofthe-week's aren't very good anymore... The best fastfood french fries and onion rings ever are in Canada - at "Harveys".
  22. 1. the ubiquitous "wrap" sandwiches. 2. Chocolate desserts. You know, the ones where there's like 3 giant shards of chocolate in a tepee shape, with mousse and cake inside, then some swirl of chocolate sauce around the outside, with like, another gob of chocolate tossed in there somewhere for good measure? Okay, I just find most choc.desserts boring as heck. But then I'm not much for desserts (aside from citrus) 3. The bastardization of 'seared ahi'. Only rarely have I ordered it and found it good. Usually they throw nine million other things in with it - often in a salad setting - and the delicacy of the meat is obliterated in a drunken mardi gras of flavors. 4. Overcooked calamari 'rings' with dip.
  23. Not sure the groundrules here, but I'll give it a whirl..... -diet pepsi -vanilla ice cream -sashimi (that combo is making me queasy though... ) ~Radio
  24. I was pretty confused too, when I started seeing these around last week. Bought one yesterday - it's not bad. The only difference between it and 'diet coke' is the 'zero' has a taste more....caramel-y or something. More along the lines of a regular coke or coke classic. I don't mind it, but I prefer less sweetness. I'm sticking to my diet pepsi (#1) and diet coke (#2). I try and go for the caffeine free options whenever possible - recc'd by doctor.
