  1. I'm seriously thinking of trademarking the 3rd one... "Turn Your Head & Coffee" "Armpit On Toast" "Those Aren't Raisins" "BobbyJoe's House of Homestyle Hooves" "Kallereez" "Truck Droppin's" "Col.Flanders' Rotissery Toenails" and I'm spent.......
  2. Oh boy oh boy oh boy, I hope this comes to my local store soon! (soCal) I'm always excited to try a new diet soda flavour!
  3. I love'em. The taste of the sea, the slippery-ness of the meat. Cold and fresh, they make me think of the outdoors. They are comforting, in a non-heavy kind of way. Delicious.
  4. Salut mes amis! I am one happy girl. Last night, my birthday, I had the opportunity to go to Matsuhisa for dinner. The word is YUM. I have admired Nobu for some time, and have wanted to try his food. I feel very lucky to have gotten the chance to go to this restaurant. We got the tasting menu, some sake, and of course had a glass of champagne for a toast. The restaurant was much smaller than I would have thought and also more casual. It was quite busy, and the noise factor is signifigant, but not extreme. The tasting menu started with 2 oysters on the half shell. One was topped with a black caviar, the other with an exquisite salsa-like mix. I've been dying to have raw oysters for ages (literally years) and so upon this plate's arrival my grin probably reached both walls! lol Next up was 4 thin slices of halibut, in an oily sauce that I'm sorry I can't identify. they were artfully arranged on the plate in a sort of 'flag' and had a tiny half cherry tomato on top. This was very good. I'm sorry I don't know exactly how it was prepared. (I took a picture, but I dont have a scanner, so we'll see if I ever manage to post it here). Next was a miso soup with clams. Good, but not overly exciting. Then.....THE KOBE BEEF with 3 different kinds of mushrooms, and asparagus. !Dear Sweet Canadian Meese! - this was beyond delicious. Melt-in-your-mouth, perfection. Perfection I say! Angels wept.....a voice from above said "the cow that happily gave his life for this dish had golden hooves and little gossamer fairy wings. He was well-read, and generally a dapper fellow with a classical music library. He died having completed his PHD in cowology at the world-renowned CIW (cow institute of the world), and is now sitting right beside me in heaven. He says 'hello' and blows you a kiss." So yeah, the KB was okay. This was more or less followed by an array of sushi: large sweet shrimp, eel, tuna, whitefish. Very fresh, soft and lovely. The sweet shrimp had a very custardy consistency to it, which I'm not sure if I'm too enthused about - but it looked beautiful! lol The taste was quite different from the usual tiny ebi they serve in japanese restaurants. Perhaps this is because Matsuhisa's shrimp was superplump and about 4x the size of my typical experience. Big shrimp - big taste. Finally, we were served a molten chocolate cake, and a tiramisu with raspberry coulis. Okay, let me preface this by saying, I'm not a major fan of chocolate. I prefer vanilla. Chocolate cake is not on my 'favorites list', I like chocolate well enough, it can be very good, but rarely does it truly indulge my senses. This molten cake was the bees knees. The cake was not too sweet, rich but not heavy, warm with a vanilla sauce pooled on top, and with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and mint leaf next to it. It was so good. Just divine. The tiramisu was excellent as well, I quite enjoyed the raspberry coulis - so light and fresh! Anyway, it was an extraordinary evening, and I wanted to share it with you all. My dining companion was just as impressed as I was. I'm sure my descriptive skills are somewhat lacking, but its extremely late, and I wanted to get this down when it was still fairly fresh in my mind. I'd love to hear about others' experiences there! I'll stop gushing now....... Matsuhisa 129 N. La Cienega Beverly Hills, Ca

This sounds like the same sort of thing as an ice cream novelty I got as a child in Canada. It was called "Snack & 1/2" - 2 oatmeal cookies sandwiching vanilla i.c., covered in a chocolate seal. Yummy. Oh man they were good. I must get one of these. Only in SanFran though? No Los Angeles? I sense the online ordering is out of my budget...
  6. Bear with me, I'm feeling creative. I'm gonna go out on a limb here: -fish-eye soup -wolf steaks -strawberry omelettes -dark chocolate-dipped mini chile peppers -bananas flambe ....feeling...nauseaus....
  7. I understand that. I'm just sayin'...
  8. But what's the point of specialized channels if you're just going to generalize them? I doubt that route makes more money, just waters everything down and makes way for more insidious advertising/shilling. As for why "alton bobby and mario" don't post on the net more - I should think posting on EG would be unthreatening - even if a poster doesn't agree they're not rude/nasty in comments (not that I've seen anyway). As for the rest of the net, well it can be pretty crazy out there (in the bad way) but that's the nature of the beast it seems. I've never seen "calorie commando" (don't get FN on my cable service ) But Juan Cruz seemed pretty cool at the Mi Amo meetup. Perhaps we should start a campaign to get rid of mark summers: bombard FN's mail desk with (very tenuously-sealed) packets of split pea soup?
  9. Oh yes....this is definitely of interest to me. When are you thinking of?
  10. Sweet potato pie? I agree with the already listed suggestions. :)
  11. The summer before last, I stayed at a friend's house for a week. There I tried those 'eggo' waffle-dealies. I dipped mine in milk. YUM. Otherwise, rather acoustic-tiley. Remembering this, I'm actually pondering buying some....
  12. Foodtutor: I'm with you on the canned Asparagus. Love the 'gus - embrace the 'gus! lol As for Campbell's, when I was a kid, it was a rare treat to have their cream of mushroom soup. Oftentimes my mother would serve C's chicken noodle or vegetable. This was all due to monetary restraints. I still dig the cream of mushroom.
  13. Torakris - I know miso is easy, but i've been a lazy bastard in this weather, and food is more comforting when someone else makes it.
  14. #417 - the longer the name, the quicker you're sicker. #93 - Just dont disturb the absinthe. Its better left alone. Let it nap in its bottle.
  15. Raining so hard here I couldn't sleep from the noise of the gutters last night. Its tapered off this afternoon. I just got home and am contemplating making a run to the local chinese for a seafood noodle soup. Though I'm in a miso soup mood, there are no good japanese places around here. Reading everyone's entries has been a blast. In particular, potato-leek and mushroom barley are on my 'to-do' list..... (btw, I dont think I've ever tried oyster crackers. I'm not sure what they look like .I typically prefer my soup crackerless, but sometimes like last evening the crackers just seem a necessity to the 'comfort food' factor.)
  16. Well its been raining here in L.A. since last saturday...this is my first official rain in the city, and I was slightly surprised at how chilly it is. I expected that closer to 'winter months', not when we're still in 'fall'. After a day of exams, I biked home this evening in a rather cold and drenched state. my self-prescription: 1.Hot shower 2. soup and crackers 3. some silly tv to induce napification. And I wonder, fellow EGers, what are your favorite soup&cracker combos in rainyrainy soggy weather? (Assuming of course you partake of the soup...) Mine is the old standby Cream of Mushroom soup (butternut squash being a close second) with soda crackers. Though my favorite crackers by themselves are wheat thins - they just dont melt properly in soup.
  17. Hi there! I had a couple of thoughts while reading your post. As a recent (as of mid-May) transplant here, I dont have an extensive list of dining suggestions, but a couple places come to mind that I would reccommend. 1. Gypsy Cafe - 940 Broxton Ave. Westwood Ca, 310-824-2119 This place is located near the UCLA campus, dont go on a weekend night if you want to avoid crowds. Its small, with some tables outside in front when busy. It serves middle-eastern-type cuisine mainly, along with some pastas. Inside you can rent a hookah (just scented smoke as far as I can tell) in various 'flavours', and a large screen tv plays a constant stream of foreign music videos and bellydancing-beauty contests. A definite 'quirky charm' atmos. The best reason to go is they have the Best falafel I have ever tasted. Crispy outside, moist and flavorful inside. Really greatstuff. 2 If you find yourself in the Manhattan Beach area, there's a cozy diner at the corner of Highland and Manhattan Beach Blvd called "The Kettle" - they do *yum* breakfasts - great omelettes - and the nonbreakfast food is pretty good too. They're open late, and seem to be a neighbourhood hang - very casual. Both of these establishments are in the mid-cheap range for price. Both are in neighbourhoods worth taking a walk through also. Hope this helps. do post how the visit goes
  18. orange-banana-strawberry vanilla yogurt smoothie. (vitc,potass,calcium & protein right?)
  19. likes: the smell of freshly-husked corn. so green! fresh-picked apples at a stand bbq(specifically, the smell of bricquets floating through the neighbourhood) toast cotton candy oranges, lemon, lime grapefruit - all citrus the scent of a perfect pear hot chocolate with mini marshmallows dislikes: burnt microwave popcorn unburnt microwave popcorn cloves burnt coffee black licorice 'pork cracklings'/pork rinds peanut butter sandwich 'eau de mcdonalds' from a block away on the street
  20. Creativity, Connection and Culture. In varying orders.
  21. Stickiness. That's what really gets me (beyond of course, what previous posters have mentionned re:lipstick shmears etc). A sticky menu, tabletop, condiments/S&P shakers - give me the willies. Some places seem to get a nice layer of syrup(?) on their washcloths instead of soap to wash things down. oO(achieve that 'extra-lacquered look' on the table?) Also, upholstery that you suspect has not been cleaned since Abe went to the theatre.
  22. We-ell, I'm not sure if this is odd or not...And you might say its 'badly-made' in that I dont prepare it.... I like to eat raw (silken or firm) tofu straight from the package. Plain. I mean, I'll have it with soya sauce too, no problem, but I like eating it plain almost as well. I have found, during our current heatwave, its most refreshing when I get home at the end of the day - slippery and cool!
  23. From living in England: --------------------------- 'chip butty (ie?)" (the word 'butt' should not be associated with food. lol) Pork Scratchings (ok. EWW. makes me think of dirty little toenails - from a pig) "squash" for juice. (just darn wrong. what, are barefooted village women stomping on the oranges for my tropicana? Hmm...) Also, it bugs me when people pronounce the H in 'herbs'. (Just makes me think of the Wendys guy) -------------------------- From North America: --------------------------- 'finger lickin' good' (eek!) scrumptious Delish, of course. crossanwich (blasphemy!) Fun topic
  24. I'm no expert, but I would've thought you'd use unbeaten eggs. Have you tried using just the whites maybe?
