Ohh, 13 bean soup! Yummy, and even better if you've got a hunk of ham or a hock hidden away...! (Even a nice bit of smoked turkey!) ETA: turkey

By chance, does anyone here remember the french fries they sold at Palisades Amusement Park? THEY were the undisputable BEST that I've ever had! Fresh potatos, Wesson oil, salt and malt vinegar. The things dreams are made of!

Down here in Florida, we have Checkers, which is part of Rally's I belive. Good batter dipped crunchy fries. Yummy!

Hummingbirdkiss, you did not say how big a quantity of peanunt you have. If it's only a handful, I'd roast them in the oven and use in the topping of the rhubarb crumble or crisp you'll come up with. If there are a lot, either make boiled peanuts for snacks, or make a kind of African stew with the peanuts added sort of like beans. HTH!

Seems to me that Delia has become the U.K.'s answer to our own dear Sandra Lee, of Food TV infamy. Reading from a Yank's perspective, I rather like her! (But, then again, I'm one who uses frozen pound cake, frozen berries and vanilla pudding and calls it trifle )

I've gotten raves with Baked Country Ribs with Onions and Kraut, and it's painless! Take about six pieces of country ribs, bone in are best, a couple (or more) big yellow onions, sliced into thinish half-moon slices, a can or two of sauerkraut ( I like Barvarian Kraut with caraway seeds, it's a little bit sweet) rinsed a little. Pile in layers in a 9 x 13" baking pan, scattering minced garlic over each layer, and into a 325 degree oven for about an hour or so. When the meat's done the dish is finished. I've also had good luck roasting country ribs with a glaze of Dijon mustard and apricot preserves. Not too much mustard, about 2 to 1. Potatoes with the sauerkraut dish, rice or couscous for the glazed. HTH!

This should be banned from posting unless you can share. Btw, HORAAYYY!!! The vegetarian period has finished! Today, mum and I made something I have been craving for the past two months... honey grilled mullet with rice paper Well actually, I had to bake it because our grill doesn't work atm but usually, we would grill the fish. Anyway, it was the best meal I've had in AGESSSSS. oh and this was my last roll so I tried to stuff as much inside it as possible hehe (just thought I'd share a picture of my nice fat buddy). ← WOW, Ce'nedra! That gives the phrase "rolling a fattie" a whole new slant!

That's not neurotic, that's just the proper way to eat waffles! ← Of course, you must remember to put a bit of butter in each square as well!

I belong to a Fraternal organization called the Orioles Club; we're doing smoked butts, BBQ chicken and "stuff" (sides brought by members). Naturally we'll drink at the bar, and fill our bellies.

I lost my Mom's hand written recipe book to a house fire. How MUCH do I wish I'd had a digital back-up?

Well, how about "foodista/o" like "fashionista"?

Thanks for the link; what a great site!

Check the exp. date before you buy them; they are not a traditionally fast seller and the vending machine guys are notorious for leaving stuff past its' prime! ← Oh oh, I hope that's not why mine tasted so good ← Unless you are defining "slightly rancid" as "good" then I highly doubt it!

Two more for me "Nanny Ogg's Cookbook" and "The Recipe Hall of Fame Quick and Easy Cookbook" Nanny Ogg's is a Terry Pratchet book, and like most of his stuff, is screamingly funny. I doubt I'll ever cook from it, but it's ROTFLMAO funny. Quick and Easy, on the other hand has some very tasty sounding stuff, like an apple salad with caramel... YUM!

Kim, I think we all know about AbeBooks, but have you found http://www.thriftbooks.com http://www.thriftbooks.com' target='_blank'>? I received a book from them that I had ordered thru Amazon (used, natch). I checked it out and sent my son a wish list a mile long! That'll keep me in birthday, Mothers' Day and Christmas presents for a while, and they're CHEAP, too!

Peter, you have to remember that Houston used to be the oil city, so driving everywhere became the "support your hometown" thing to do. It's also because cars are climate controlled and Houston's weather can be horrible.

Holy BLEEP, David Ross! Those pictures are so beautiful; the perfect lighting, the great clarity of the focus, just WOW! If I may ask, what type of camera do you use? I just received a nice little Samsung 7.2 megapixel for Christmas, and I still haven't really learned it yet. Your colors absolutly glow; the cherries look like Christmas ornaments!

My "famous" (scuse the expression) macaroni salad. My mom's recipe; a pound of good pasta cooked al dente, chopped celery, chopped onions, mayo sour cream and salt and white pepper to taste. Going to my fraternal club, the Orioles for a gang feed. For some reason, they love it!

Peter thank you so much for this travelogue! I lived in Houston one winter, but my resteraunt experience there was slight, owing to a very bad case of "myfundsarelow". So much nicer to view it thru your eyes!
