Wow! looks like they focused on Hasbrouck Heights, this trip.

there are so many great places in NB. What type of food are you in the mood for?
-
Honestly, I was there a few times and was not as impressed as other egulleters. I felt their menu was all over the place..They never quite figured out "what type of restaurant they `wanted to be" ..a bit asian, a bit italian, none of it great, just a cut above mediocre. Perhaps they've found their niche.

Hey Curlz, What did you pick up today?

It's one of the undiscovered places to dine. My bro found this place, shortly after he moved to Montville. Great pizza ( great clam pie) and great food at a reasonable price.

I don't really care for Calandra's bread. Then again, I'm spoiled having practically grown up in the back room of Marie's Bakery in Hoboken. There is nothing like hot bread just as it comes out of the oven..

Carlo Russo is now closed. However there is a great store called Wine Country in the complex where Huffman Koos was located off Rt#4.

I've been disppointed by some of the MBC stuff, too. Although, the zucchini foccicia that they sell at the Farmer's Market is downright tasty. All the other stuff tends to be too dry. Can't figure why. I use whole wheat flour in some of my baking, and it doesn't come out as dry as theirs. The Brioche Toast at Gina's did look good. Guess I'll have to try it the next time I'm there. While I liked the scone, I have to admit that I am a sucker for the Lemon Poppy Scones at Whole Foods. While I was at Gina's, the last time, someone was buying a dozen of their corm muffins, and said they were fabulous. The guy behind the counter even offered to warm one for him. Now how's that for service!!! They definitely have my attention!

That's the organic bakery that also sells at the Montclair farmer's market.

So glad I could help, Curlz. :

I'm almost positive that I saw them at the first stand on the left. It's the one that also sells the fresh flowers. I think that is Matarazzo's stand. I picked up some Empire and Macoun apples from them last week and they were great! I like'm tart and crisp.

Curlz, Get yourself to the Montclair Farmer's Market this Saturday. Open 9Am -2 PM. It's at the Walnut Street Train Station. If you need directions, let me know.

Swell-looking place, & they have coffees, but no tea. Unfathomable. ← Agreed... ;-) I'm a tea drinker, too!!

There is a restaruant supply store on State Street in Hackensack. I would imagine that they would have them. Call ahead. I'm sure the ph# can be found in the phone book.

After strolling the Montclair Farmer's Market, today, I drove up Walnut St and noticed a place called Gina's Bakery. What a find! Wonderful breads, muffins, foccacia, upside down plum tarts.. I'm enjoying an apricot and cranberry scone...yum!

Mojave Grille has relocated to a larger space, just around the corner to 35 Elm Street. They still do not take reservations for parties under 5 people. Being a party of 3, we called a half hour ahead and they put us on the waiting list. When we arrived we had just a short wait for our table. They also now have tables outside on the sidewalk, and as it was such a beautiful evening, all were filled. For starters we ordered the tortilla chips with fire roasted salsa and avacado. The salsa has a nice slightly smoky flavor , but could have used a bit more kick. Chips were nice and fresh tasting. We were just starting on our chips, when the waiter brought over our salads. I asked him if he would hold our salads for a liitle bit, and he graciously complied. We ordered three different salads, and all were winners: The mixed field greens, with toasted pumpkin seeds and a Margarita vinaigrette, the warm hazelnut crusted goat cheese salad, with mango, jicama, dried cranberries in a sweet balsamic vinaigrette, and the southwestern lime caesar salad, with spiced croutons, and cotija cheese. For entrees, my friends chose the Grilled filet mignon , in a port wine sauce, with garlic mashed potatoes, topped with their wonderful crispy cayanne onions. The filet was ordered med rare and was cooked perfectly. My entree was the jalapeno gnocchi, with shitake mushrooms, cojita cheese in an avacado tomatillo sauce. It was scrumptious with just a bit of spiciness. The only negative was that it was drowning in a little too much sauce. For dessert, we shared a chocalate pecan pie with vanilla ice cream. We expected this to be like a pecan pie, but it was more like a brownie pie. Good, but not what we expected. Lattes and cappuccinos were good. Tab came to $160, including tip.

Don't want to let on how old I am, but.............. Growing up in Hoboken, there was a guy who would make home made candy apples and he would sell them from a cart, that had three trays of the most lucious candy apples I've ever had. He would stand outside Jos F Brandt school at 3PM each day, selling those apples. They were sweet and sticky and gooey... Boy were they good. We called him the Candy Apple Man. Anyone remember him?

This weekend my bro brought out a container of Spumoni Gelato from NY Ice on Rt 23 in Butler. A nice blend of almond flavor, chocolate, nuts...WOW was it good.!!

Years ago, my family used to go to Spain on Ferry Street, when we were in the mood for Paella. Can't say how it is now.

A good Low-Fat Chocolate cake can certainly be accomplished. Think of the great desserts from the book "Chocolate and the Art of Low Fat Desserts" by Alice Medrich. ← That's fine, but chocolate by definition would have to contain about 50% fat. Anything lower than that wouldn't be chocolate. And, even if it could be accomplished, it probably wouldn't taste very good. Fresh fruit, anyone? ← You substitute Cocoa for the high fat chocolate, as they do in brownies...same taste without all the fat. These cakes turn out delicious.
