  1. Gosh, I'd all but forgotten about What's Your Beef. I used to live in that area many years ago. It was a great place! The steaks and burgers were cook to order, perfectly.
  2. Sorry Tommy, I didn't mean that for the canned/ jarred goods, just the produce and poultry and meat sections.
  3. The quality of the food at Corrado's is below par. Cheap yes......... I reather spend more and get better quality.
  4. Stop and Shop also carries ANGUS beef, which is a better cut, (might even be prime)and probably not as expensive as Whole Foods.
  5. There's an Italian Pork Store on Fanklin Ave in Nutley. Don't know if they carry steaks, too. It's worth a trip. I buy my meat at Whole Foods. I feel it's worth the extra price.
  6. Where are Aqua Grill and The Pearl located? I'm now working in the city and would like to try out a new place. Karen
  7. Rooney's in Long Branch, Legal Seafood in Paramus ( at the bar)
  8. I diito the suggestion for the Mojave Grill. It's graet southwestern food! Luv the addictive cayenne onion rings..YUM
  9. How about: Cafe Panache in Ramsey, Matisse in Rutherford, or Latour in Ridgewood.
  10. I also live in Clifton, right near the Stop & Shop, but my vote is definitely for Whole Foods in Edgewater!!!!!!!!
  11. Glad to see everyone had a great time, last week. Sorry I missed it. Next e.gullet "weekend food trip" ...i'm there! ( Get home too late from work to join you).
  12. Nutley, I think you're right. The pizzaeria is next door. The restuarant/ store is on Kingsland Ave. across from Hoffman LaRoche.
  13. I dined there with a friend, last weekend, and from the very beginning we were disappointed. While the food was very good, the service left something to be desired. The wait staff is comprised of inexperienced very young men and women. After being seated, we were presented with a warm basket of bread. Hungry and excited that it was warm, I eagerly opened the covering. However, it revealed a loaf of bread that looked as if it had been bought at the local supermarket. With all the great Italian salumerias and bakeries in the area, you would think that they would have chosen a nice crusty bread. They also put out those horrendous little foil packets of butter. When asked if we could have some olive oil, instead, they brought us the olive oil / vinegar trivit. The oil was not EVOO, but very bland, probably light olive oil. We decided to split an appetizer of Mussels Fra Diavolo. The mussels were tasty, sweet succulent morsels. However, we had to ask for small plates, and then they forgot to provide us with a bowl for the shells. We got one of the waiter's attention, and asked for a bowl. He answered back " just wait a minute", and ran with a couple of others, to the second level of the restaurant to what appeared to be some sort of emergency. We kept waiting, while our mussels were getting cold, and when he finally came back with a bowl, he told us that someone had taken the owner's wine. I guess taking care of the boss was more important than taking care of the customers. Our entrees, Rotelle Putanesca, and Penne with Brocoli Rabe and Sausage were very good, and the pasta was perfectly cooked (al dente). With our plates still half full, we were engaged in conversation, when a busboy came out of the kitchen and tried to take our plates. He didn't even ask if we were finished; he just reached over to take it. We decided we would not stay for dessert, and asked for the check. When our waitress took the folder with the cash, she asked if my friend wanted change back. He had placed a hundred dollar bill there...lol, and the bill was only about $36 This restaurant could be a nice addition to Nutley's restaurants, but the wait staff seriously needs training. Has anyone else dined here and had a similar experience? Am I being too judgemental?
  14. I agree. It should be about making eating habits healthy ones. A diet that includes all these fake foods, can't be healthy. Stick to the basics: good complex carbs, fruits, veggies, chicken and fish.
  15. Rosie, This cabernet was very, very good. It was lush, and full bodied with lots of berry. As I mentioned, it had won a gold medal, in last years competition, which is why we bought it. Last fall we went to one of the NJ wine festivals. About 15 wineries had tasting booths plus there were a few( not enough) food stands. The Black Raspberry was also quite good. Perhaps one of the festivals might be a good e.gullet outing!!
  16. Spent the holiday at my brother and sister-in law's. We are all watching our weight, so dinner was carefully planned. For an appetizer we had huge stuffed artichokes. ( purchased at Whole Foods) with a Cave Springs dry Reisling. Then came a beautiful salad of fennel, edamame, chunks of parmesan, topped with chopped toasted almonds, and drizzled with EVOO. yum! For our entree, we had Rack of lamb, roasted asparagus, baby carots, and fingerling potatoes. The wine was A NJ wine.....A nice cabernet from Tomasello Winery that won a gold medal, last year. For dessert we enjoyed a warm lemon pudding cake ( Sara Molten made this last week) and added a scoop of Blue Moon Raspberry cassis sorbet. ...and, a glass of Tomasello Winery Black Rasberry wine. All in all it was a great meal, and relatively low in calories!
  17. I just satrted working in the city, and now I know what "redhead" was talking about. It is mostly a take out place, but some have tables. You choose your greens, and then the person behind the counter customizes your salad with your choice of items. It's a step up from a regular salad bar, in that it provides more of a choice. Sorry Red, nothing like this on this side of the Hudson.
  18. The Whole Foods Stores have a wonderful salad bar and prepared food section. They also have a chef preparing fresh sushi. If you are not familiar with these stores, they are organic food stores. So, you can be assured that you are purcahsing the best quality available. ...something that you cannot be assured of at those Korean salad bars in the city.
  19. Love Rooney's in Long Branch. The view at night is just spectacular. One of my favorites for a drink is Authur's Landing, in Weehawken. You just can't top that NYC Skyline View!
  20. Thanks Tommy, I will !! Charlie is doing fine....also keeping away from dining out, but making great meals at home.!!
  21. Hi Rosie!! Yes, It's Karen, sister of cook 123. It's been a long time! I haven't been dining out much these days, so my favs are too few to mention. Trying to keep the waistline trim...lol I had actually thought about dining at The Petite Cafe, last weekend. Then I read you were there that night..It would have been fun seeing you again Do you ever have your group dinners on the weekend? I would love to join you, one of these days....You, too Tommy!!! I begin a new job on Monday, and will now be working in the city....so weekdays would be hard for me. Wish my first time at Petite would have been better.
  22. I went there tonight, and have to say I was bit disappointed. Perhaps because of all the hype... My comapanion and I both had the she crab soup and I have to say it was excellent. However, my friend ordered the mussel risotto as an entree, and it was gloppy, not creamy. I had the seafood duo that Weiner,(see above post) mentioned. The halibut was right on, but the scallops, while being cooked perfectly, were plated with a very bland sauce. All I could taste was soy sauce...no other nuances whatsoever. It was described to us as a thai sauce. My friend lived in Thailand for several years and said it had no resemblance to a thai sauce. For dessert, we shared a capucinno creme brulee. It was burnt. I mean burnt "black', not the nice brown it should be. Not sure I will return....sorry
