  1. Oh because it's a chain restaurant versus fine dining. But as he explained, he helped make the food at HoJo's better which is good! Of course it's declined since then... But they made such great fried clams. Among other things.

Eating in the car is precariously close to refueling the body, and less like enjoying a meal. and yet, somedays, it's the only way to eat.
  3. what were those things in there, anyway?
  4. we still have those here in Michigan! Love them. where do you live?

ah yes, eating in the car. You can put almost anything into a tortilla or lawash for that on the go thing. PB & J is always good. french toast sticks are also good wrapped up. I also like PB and cereal wrapped up. Smooth PB and Captain Crunch make a great combo.
  6. Juuceman and Fat Guy are right on this one. Somewhere on E-Gullet I explained in detail how I found out that Gray's Papaya and Papaya King use the exact same Sabrett dogs (code # is identical) while Katz's uses a bigger version of the same dog. This was confirmed to me by 2 independant Sabrett distributors, the son of a long time Sabrett employee who delivered to the above places for many years, and also the current person in charge of private label who I contacted about buying franks similar to Papaya King. He told me that I could have the exact same ones, and then went into detail. Sabrett makes franks according to 2 recipes. All beef and beef and pork. They come in different sizes; and with a casing or skinless. The beef franks are served at the above mentioned places as well as the many pushcarts in the city and N.J. Boulevard Drinks in Jersey City serves a frank that is just like Papaya King. The owner there also told me that his distributor told him that they were using the same dogs. Places that I know of that use the 50% beef 50% pork frank are the Hot Grill, Callahan's, and the Windmill. A few years ago, I went to N.Y. to sample dogs from Katz's, Papaya King, and Gray's. At the time, I didn't know the origin of these franks. I noticed that they all were very similar, but like many here, I preferred Papaya King even though all 3 use the same dog. Katz's I liked least, only because the dog that I had there was undercooked and not hot. Differrences in taste have to do with how they're cooked, and maybe how the dogs are stored (frozen or not?) as well as certain factors that have to do with the individual locations. I guess it's like the many Chicago Hot Dogs. Most use a Vienna frank, but people swear that they taste better at one place or another. Same with Guiness Stout. Same beer, but people like it at one particular location. Last year I was in Manhatten and tried a few dogs at Gray's. I went down to Papaya King's location around 44th st and found out that they've been gone for a few years, so I didn't get to make the comparison again. Hey John, is there anything about hot dogs you don't know? Awesome. Anyway, do you have any knowledge of the hot dog/coney islands here in Detroit?
  7. Great book, but the weird part was I read the whole thing with a french accent. Like it was jacques who was reading me the story. Weird, but in a cool kind of way. I liked the part about working for HoJo's, my self.
  8. Ditto. Oh lord how I miss that sweet, sweet, frozen pudding goodness. do you think the jury will blame Bill Cosby for this too?
  9. well, you can play on my team anytime. for whatever that's worth.
  10. I love goofy. and I was just being silly. and I can't stop. it's genetic.
  11. thanks for the photos. that looks like what I was thinking. I've really got to get out of Detroit more, don't I?
  12. my head is starting to hurt trying to figure out who's posts are trying to make a point, and who's posts are just goofing on the others. that said, I don't like miracle whip. But I've eaten it in stuff, and it's ok. I'm not a big fan of offal, but I've eaten it in stuff, and it was ok. i hope that clears things up for you all.
  13. ok, this sounds really yummy, but I'm not sure I get what it is exactly. Can you provide more details?
  14. as the proud parent of a 3 and a 6 year old (i have pictures if you'd like to see them), we have been taking them to dinner at high end places since they were, well, one month old, now that I think about it. We've only ever left once because the kids were misbehaving. My parents started taking me to the good places when I was about 3. You have to start somewhere, or there will be no folks to go to them in a generation or two. I've had more meals spoiled by obnoxious adults than by kids, and nobody kicked them out. At least kids don't get drunk and disorderly.
  15. Birder and hest, you kids are right on the money!! it's canned soup, for heaven's sake. It supposed to be salty, it's supposed to taste like canned soup. That's part of the reason why we buy it!
  16. I think what this study indicates is the pressure some universities (ok, most universitites) put on their profs to publish, no matter how silly or lacking in scientific rigor the work is, just publish. Don't you wonder how much this study cost you? After all, it's your money.

I like gefilte fish for breakfast. Yes, with horseradish. My fav is left-over spagetti carbonnara. Nothing better. Hot or cold. Eggs, smoked meat, cream, what could be wrong with that?
  18. Mrs Clothier is right there with you. She thinks this is a dandy. Much as I love her, I just can't walk/drive through a fast food place and get a salad. I start to say the word salad, and cheeseburger just comes out. I can't explain it.
  19. so, (and you had to see this coming) what are the words to "Mannix"?
  20. Once again, Lisa, you are right on the money. My folks have a place in Petoskey (look at the back of your left hand. Traverse City is by your pinky and ring finger, Petoskey is between your ring and middle fingers. Try doing THAT with another state). In the spring, she has a spot. More morels than she can pick. The nice folks at American Spoon foods also have purchased some land near where my Mom picks because it's so heavy with morels. Tapawingo does a morel menu in May that's worth the trip for as well. This post brought to you but the Michigan Travel bureau. Just kidding.
