  1. wow. a real thought out answer. that's probably what you were looking for in the first place, right?
  2. My sister, the architect (you rememeber her don't you?) is short. 4'11 to be precise. When she was designing her house, everything she did, she did to her scale. Yes it's odd to cook in her kitchen but it's not like I'm a giant. Anyway, she had the same problem, and she just built the cabinet over the fridge, and then did a whole arsty-farsty painting/sculpter thing where the cabinets would go. Her advice was when in doubt, make it art.
  3. This brings up an interesting question. How come my recipe file is always at home when I read questions like this at work?
  4. Here's my 2 cents: I have a Weber Performer as well. Love the gas start in those michigan winters. It won't matter what you buy if you don't use good fuel. Either real charcoal or wood. Forget the briquets. The other factor is skill level. Can you smoke briskets for 18 hours on a weber? Yes, but you'll also screw it up once or twice along the way. You can use a weber for a lot of different styles of cooking, but it takes practice. What was my point again? Oh, yeah, just cuz Tiger Woods can hit a high hooking 6 iron from the right rough from 200 yards to 6 inches away doesn't mean you can. You gotta practice, and you've got to have the right equipement. Buy a grill. Buy a smoker.
  5. I will never post on roadfood.com again. Oh wait, that wasn't my decision. I will never, ever listen to the argument about gas vs. charcoal. And I will never care about whether or not beans belong in chili.
  6. Shame on all of you! How did you miss this? The things we never, ever run out of at our house is the ingrediants for tollhouse cookies. Have you ever had to explain to a 6 and 3 year old why they can't make cookies?
  7. Actually, everyone always complains about how bad the eating is in their hometown to others in their hometown. But then they will defend it to the hilt the second an out-of-towner agrees. Calvin Trillin did a whole bit on it in one of his books. Besides, I've been in A2 enough to know better. It is missing that one "WOW" place, though, you folks are right on target there.
  8. I forgot to give my V Day report. We had dinner at El Azteco in East Lansing. Cheese dip, blue corn enchildas and jojoque enchildadas, a couple od sopapillas for dessert, then we went to go see "50 First Dates". I'm not an Adam Sandler fan, and the last thing I saw Drew Barrymore in was E.T., but it was a really good movie. Honest. It was. And I'm not a big movie goer or fan. It's a lot of money to spend when I can wait 6 months and see it from home for half the cost. But it was a good movie, and I"m glad I went.
  9. It's interesting to read all the notes about how bad the eating is in Ann Arbor. Come up to Flint sometime, and I'll show you a food waste land. It boils down to this: if you build it, will they come? I don't mean to poop on A2, but I think the Oakland County/Detroit Metro is not likely to drive to A2 to eat. I work in Troy, and most of my co-workers and clients only give A2 though on about 8 Saturdays out of the year. One Tapawingo story: It's a busy August night, we are there with my then 7 year old nephew. He starts to get a little sqwuirmy, and the next thing I know, Chef Pete comes out, and asks him if he would like to come watch them cook his dinner. Couragous kid that he is, he goes. Comes back about 5 minutes later, awestruck. His quote "it was the coolest thing I've ever seen". Great place to take your kids.
  10. well, you know how hard it is to live when you only make 20 mill a movie.
  11. boy, even for all the fun you guys are poking at them, I bet you all watch. And isn't that the point?
  12. true. why is it that the more money you have, the more free stuff you get?
  13. Better Made made right here in Detroit, Rock City!
  14. Been to a few Oscar parties over the years. Some are themed, like foods mentioned or eaten in movies, some pick a movie and go from there. The Apollo 13 party was fun. Any excuse to have a party, even if the Oscars, like the Golden Globes and most other award shows are bought and paid for.
  15. Don't you wonder who number 2 is? Or did I ask you that already? Can I play if I belong to Sam's and not Costco?
  16. So, my folks, who are regular NO visitors, are going to the festival for the first time. They have their fav places to eat and stay, but I'd like to have that one little nugget of info that my Mom, in all her research, won't have that only a local would know. So, Brooks, my friend, (or anyone else)what is the one piece of local knowledge that you can share with me so I can really impress the heck (can I swear here?) out of my mom with something she should she/do while she's there? thanks
