  1. Since I am starting on the refinishing of the Boos block table today, figured a couple of before pics would be in order. This is a front shot. This is a sort of close up of the top. My old digital has poor resolution, sorry.
  2. Bloody marys? The drink? Your kidding right? Unless the I have missed something, to my knowledge bloody marys get their name from the tomato juice in them. What say eGulleters, have I led a sheltered life?
  3. Nice avatar lambfries. BTW, those would certainly qualify for this topic.
  4. Two batches of my mom's lefse. Maybe there is some norwegian in me that we don't know about because all us kids find it exciting.
  5. I mow my wifes rhubarb right to the dirt and fein ignorance everytime. Sometimes I say "Oh, sorry thought it was the peonies." Then she gets that look. Not a big fan of peonies either, to me they stink.
  6. They still do. My second son who is away from home now (in the Marine Corps) would only order this when we ate there. He would count the pieces of bacon on the sandwich everytime to see if it was always the same. He'd be a prime suspect in the above bacon caper except for the fact he always fessed up to any wrong doing. I'd like to say that next time he calls home I'd ask him about the # of bacon slices on the Hoolihan's BLT, but I won't because I'm to busy with more important conversation. BTW, those pictures of the bacon sandwich made my mouth water. In fact I was sort of wondering why he only put a pound and a quarter of bacon on it. I would have went for the whole two pounds. To me it's like eating just half a bag of Oreos or Doritos (neither of which I eat on a regular basis), what the hell I just eat the whole bag. In case anyone is wondering, for the record I'm 6' 0" and 185. My wife couldn't believe the time I polished off two bags of double stuff Oreos. First I went through the first bag making quadruple stuffs(pull two cookies apart and push the two halves with the most filling together and then eat the two leftover unfilled halves. When done with this you eat all the quadruple stuffs you've created with lots of milk. For some reason that night one bag wasn't enough so enter bag number two. And yes my stomach hurt when done.
  7. We laugh about the time my wife made BLT's for supper. I had to work late so she put aside 10 pieces of bacon for my two sandwiches, then left on a errand. One or all four of the kids(no one ever fessed up) whittled that down to two pieces about half size. So I ate the bacon plain and had lettuce and tomato sandwiches. When she got home I said something smart assed like thanks for the all the bacon. Kids...
  8. Lets see if this works. Google define: gobsmacked
  9. I found out about Norske Nook from an uncle who would drive 5 hours one way just to have pie there. I told him he was nuts, and he said unless I had the pie I couldn't say that. I wouldn't drive 5 hours just for the pie, but it is the best pie I've ever had.
  10. For pies this is the place. Norske Nook I can vouch for the Osseo location, which is about 2 hours east on 94. Didn't know they had more than 1 location till visiting their website. Be prepared to stand in line. They also serve soups and sandwiches and such other non-pie fare, but in all the times I've been there I've never had anything but pie...it is so damn good. Why ruin a good pie buzz with a sandwich. The blueberry is my favorite. These are not anywhere close to being cheap, but they are worth every nickel. Anybody else ever been there?

  12. I've got a 24 by 24 by 10 inch thick boos butcher block table that is being delivered this weekend. Bought it on ebay, the thing looked rather dried out in the pictures and this might be why I was only bidder. Opening bid was $100.00 and the buy it now option was $500.00. Debated even bidding for a couple of days and finally submitted a $100.00 bid and got it. Delivery is free, my parents winter in Arizona and Dad was good enough to pick up this 185 lb monster and drag it back with them, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bid as shipping would have been $$$. I love restoring old things back to a useful state if not their former glory and will try and post some before/after shots. So now it's a question of mineral oil or boos mystery oil. I'm thinking mineral oil to start since the paraffin might not soak in well and mystery oil to finish. Mom confirmed the fact it is dried out. She said it was a little dried and cracked...which means in her speak...dry as a bone with huge cracks as she doesn't want to hurt my feelings. Intially I thought about soaking in water to swell the wood like they do with old wooden boats but sort of figure this will do more damage than good. Any thoughts?
  13. Some family kitchen items apparently have a great deal of value. Griswold cast iron skillet with lid It made me go look at my skillets with lids.
  14. Will mineral oil swell dried out wood? Or is it something a person has to live with and chalk up to rough past? Found this info on Boos Block website maybe it helps a bit. Use the TIPS button on the left hand side of the page...couldn't get a straight link to this page. Boos Block
  15. Good pickles are to be relished(hmmm), bad pickles should be left on the plate. A local small town bar we frequent for the friends, reasonable priced drinks, homemade onion rings and made from scratch mushroom swiss burgers knows that I always ask for a extra pickle or two that now I no longer need to ask. It's always added to my order.
  16. Yes, Leinies is good beer. They give a excellent brewery tour too. Chippewa Falls, WI. Check out their website Leinenkugel Beerand ask them about a close distributer or options. There are Leinies lovers who drive across country in pickups to load up and bring the "good stuff" back. Their "bocks" are my favorite, eagerly awaited every fall. But you have to be quick cause they don't last long in most stores. As a side note, the wife and I met Jake Leinenkugel jr (grandson) in `85 when I returned home on military leave with the Marine Corps. We were at a small irish pub in St. Paul, MN killing time before a Elton John concert. I had the very short haircut (called a high and tight in the Corps) so I stood out a bit. This guy comes over to our barstools and asks if we'd like to try a beer on him. He seemed genuine enough, so I asked him point blank, "why?". He says he's a distributer and would like our honest opinion on it. So we try it, and it's a damn site better than the Michelob we had. I ask what it is, and he says "Leinenkugel, heard of it?". "Nope" I say and we talk about beer, life and such for about 20 minutes. At the end he asks if I'm in the service. Tell him a brief history and he returns with his. He's a officer in the Marine Corps reserve over in Wisconsin. Well anyone who knows about military custum knows that I need to stand up and say something appropriate like "Good evening, Sir!" once I realize he's a officer and I'm a mere non-com. He tells me to sit down and knock it off. Then invites us to come to Chippewa Fall's for a tour of his family's brewery. Gives us a card, and says to call ahead and he will conduct our tour himself. We never did it. Fools that we are. Put it off time and again. Someone told me that Miller brewing now owns Leinenkugels, but the family still "runs" the brewery. Don't know for sure if this is true or not. They have a very nice visitor center with Leinies stuff for sale and guided tours every half hour or so. Free beer at the end too.
  17. He should have done abit more than just pour you a new glass. Anyways it's a good feeling when you're vindicated like that. Does the "8" stand for years old and how is it different from the Reserva?
  18. I had a cousin who went off to Alaska to make his fortune on the crab boats. He was back within a week I found out later. Dad said that they had to come get him off the boat with a helocopter at his expense halfway through day one. His fortune was a net loss of over ten grand. But that's far better than buying the farm, I guess.

Those bastards. And entering a real independent just gives em a target. Now we know what our intelligence people were doing instead of verifying whether or not there were WMD's.

Now you know why it only had 2 occupied tables. As for the gum, there are far worse things a customer can do. And just how much does a margarita cost there? $15
  22. Most kitchens the rule is you use your own knives, or the kitchen knives. Never another chef's knife without thier permission. You basically have two choices...either tolerate it or put your foot down. Look em square in the eye and say "Not yours, mine...get your own." You can trust em if you want, but when you go to use it sometime and it's chipped or the tip is snapped off, you'll only have yourself to blame for tolerating it. It's not theirs, they didn't have to research the item before buying, or pay for it, or keep it clean and sharp. Are they going to use it with care like you do...no way.
