  1. Because I could not face a normal sandwich for lunch today, after that meal at Corduroy last night, I went back to Oyamel for lunch today and sat at the bar. They had a copy of the USA Today and Post at the end of the bar for customers to read which I thought was a nice touch. I enjoyed reading the Food section and seeing Monica's article and eGullet mention. Anyway on to what I ate. I had a homemade honeydew melon Agua Fresca. The bartender, Sharon (of salt air fame), is making these from scratch and will have various flavors based upon product availability. They also had watermelon available today. Very refreshing and not too sweet. I think there might have been a touch of salt, but I forgot to ask. For lunch I had the mushroom soup and huevos montulena. The soup was rich earthy broth full of large meaty pieces of various mushrooms. Very satisfying on this dreary day. The huevos was a sunny-side up egg served on top of their wonderful black refried beans and a tortilla. This was surrounded by a tasty tomato sauce, slices of ham, and topped with a few peas. While enjoyable, I think that I would try something else on my next visit. For dessert (How could I resist a Klc dessert?!) I had the molten chocolate cake. As wonderful as last time and to my surprise it was not spicy as I had remembered. I guess some of the flan was still on my plate when I tried this the last time.
  2. Wow, what a wonderful dinner it was last night! The evening started with a glass of champagne and some passed hors d’oeuvres. The items passed around were: Warm goat cheese with crispy shredded potato (?) Duck filled spring rolls Bruschetta with lobster salad on top Cauliflower soup – I cannot remember exactly what was in it, but foie gras was one of the items. This was served in espresso cups so that we could easily sip while chatting. As JPW mentioned earlier the buffalo mozzarella was outstanding. For once I am glad that I cannot eat scallops and this was my substitute. The flavors of the tomato coulis, basil oil, and the warm cheese were incredible. Combined with the crunch from the crispy phyllo nest made this my favorite course of the meal. As Stretch said, the wine pairings were great. That Cotes du Rhone was just amazing with the confit of chicken. Each of the other courses was wonderful and the flow from one course to the next was as close to perfect as I could imagine. The desserts were a chocolate lovers dream and I was particularly fond of the dark chocolate tart. After the dessert was served we were all treated to a Turkish sweet made by eG member, fero style. I have the name written on a sheet of paper at home. Anyway, the dessert was a cookie (for lack of a better term) stuffed with walnuts and drizzled with honey. They were not too sweet and the perfect complement to the coffee that ended the meal. Also a thanks to DonRocks for the after dinner drink. BTW, I was asked if I would see you in the next night or so from one of the wait staff. My response...laughter, as that would be like finding a needle in a haystack.
  3. Here are my pictures of the dinner. My thanks to Chef Power and the entire staff at Corduroy for a wondeful and delicious dinner. Note: If you view the pictures via the slide show, sort by date (descending) to see things in order.

If the new fall menu is available I expect a full report!
  8. The flan did have interesting spice flavors including anise. The molten cake was chocolate mole, right? And mole is typically a mixture of all kinds of chiles, spices, unsweetened chocolate, and peanuts. Maybe I was in a food induced coma. I guess I need to get back there and order it again!
  9. This place is worth shlepping to NoVa, no question! Chef Shogun, mnebergall, mktye and her husband, and I had a wonderful dinner last night. mktye discreetly took some pictures of the dishes and they will be posted later. Here are some of the highlights with as much detail as I remember. I was going to take notes, but forgot about that when the food started to come out. I am sure that the others will correct any mistakes or omissions that I made below. Salmon Ceviche - cannot remember the details but it was good. Chicken Tacos - We had an order of each type and these and the braised beef tounge were the top choices of the group. When the tacos are served hot they are much better. Hangar Steak - served med-rare on thinly sliced pineapple. Stuffed Poblano - stuffed with pork, walnuts, pears, served cold with a sauce (forgot the type) and pomegranate seeds. Frijoles Refritos - made with black beans and Dragon Fruit - cubes of fruit with lime juice and salt Chicken Soup - Forgot the real name, but it had chickpeas, lime, and ??? The broth was incredible. Chat with Steve Klc about the desserts Chocolate Mole Cake - Wonderful warm spice flavors along with the chocolate. The flavors kept changing with each bite. Goat Milk Cajeta Milk Chocolate Flan - with a slight anise flavor edited: The broth was inCredible!!! Thank you Mr. Shogun!
