  1. Since my kitchen will still be in the middle of being remodelled I will be dining at my sister's house. Thankfully it is only a 5 minute drive away. I will assist with the cooking duties, which in my family means, "Woo Hoo, Mike's cooking so we can do XYZ...". At least they do the cleaning. As for the relative who is going to get drunk and be a complete ass, well that will probably be me! Looking forward to a relaxing day of football, food, and wine!
  2. My vote for Best Value For Any Single Food Item in all of Washington must go to Corduroy's Filipino Spring Rolls during Happy Hour. From 4-7 PM at the bar only, these things are FOUR DOLLARS, and even at the regular price of six dollars, it's Free Giveaway City. During lunch only, they offer two rolls for five dollars in the restaurant. General Manager Rissa Pagsibigan is the impetus behind these spring rolls: it's her mom's own recipe, executed at the hands of the master Tom Power. Rissa told me that her mom comes in periodically and berates Tom if things aren't exactly as they're supposed to be ('You need to chop the water chestnuts a bit smaller!'). Between Rissa and Ferhat (our own fero style), Corduroy's FOH is becoming a huge strength. Next time you go in, congratulate Rissa on being one of only eight women to be invited in 2004 to join the Washington chapter of Les Dames d'Escoffier. We've all had spring rolls a million times, but I'll go out on a bamboo shoot and say that I don't think I've ever had any that are better than these. Cheers! Rocks. P.S. Try the pistachio bread pudding, made with brioche! ← I wonder how many orders of these we will go through at HH today.... And thanks for the tip on one of my favorite desserts.
  3. Its almost Friday so lets start talking about one last happy hour before Turkey Day! Since last week did not work out anyone up for meeting at Corduroy after work tomorrow?
  4. I could get into a stop at Corduroy. What time were you thinking? ← I was thinking of getting there a little before 6pm.

    Palena

Maybe they just don't like people named Jennifer. edited to add: I have had fine service there on several occasions before I knew or was known by anyone there. Of course, things are better once you know the staff regardless of where you dine.
  6. Already thinking about happy hour. Yes, it has been that type of day so far. Thinking of Corduroy.... Another suggestion? Anyone interested?

Thanks for the update. I am surprised as I have always been treated well there, even before I knew anyone there. That is too bad that the manager was not able to rectify the situation.
  8. Welcome to the board! Post away! Most of the people on the board are pretty harmless. As long as you are fair in what you report we will go easy on you! I look forward to reading your Palena review.

    Firefly

Yup. Here is the scoop from the website Wined Down Happy Hour Sip away after work - from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, Firefly is pouring a different red and white wine, with a common thread between them. Some are from our wine list and some are offered only during Happy Hour. Enjoy Chef Wabeck's special Happy Hour menu, just perfect for sharing.

    Pho

If you can handle the tripe and tendon, the meatballs should not be a problem. That said, they do not look like any type of meatball that this 1/2 Italian boy grew up eating! But I did enjoy them and enjoyed the change from the normal routine of raw eye-round and/or fat brisket. Now off to Pho, the only question is which one...

    Poor Service

Right on! I think that those speaking up at the retail type outlets you mentioned are also speaking up when they have a problem dining out. I find it hard to believe that people are just passive-aggressive when dining out. If someone is going to shout out to everyone, "I am never going there again", I would hope that they would talk to a manger about the problem and see the type of response they get. Now, if they are treated poorly for a legitimate complaint, I say shout away!

Back room or cafe? Did you speak with someone about the poor service? It is hard for a restaurant to know what it has to correct if you don't speak up. What was so bad that you would not want to return?
  14. There is a Jaleo in Crystal City and you can make reservations for lunch and dinner between 5-6:30pm. If you want to stick with another José Andrés restaurant then Oyamel is right next door. Info can be found here...
  15. Sausage sandwich for lunch and I did the pork shoulder for dinner tonight as per Stretch's instructions and I concur, Aaaaarrrggghhh! :) The ribs he was putting out today were incredibly huge and I wished that I would have tried the soup. Ah, next time. BTW, you never know who you are going to see there...
  16. Blast, I was going to ask if anybody wanted to go for happy hour. So...want to go back in a few hours? ← I thought I would wait until tomorrow to go to the Firefly wine happy hour. What, with Champagne and all. ← That is what I was thinking, since I have class tonight.
  17. Firefly is going to be celebrating its second birthday on Saturday, November 6th, from 1 to 4 p.m.. Anyone planning on enjoying some of John W's complimentary BBQ?
  18. A small group of eGers are meeting up at Oyamel tomorrow (Friday) at noon.
  19. Go and get some of the roasted squash soup at Firefly, it is autumn in a bowl. The soup is topped with some pickled onions and a drizzle of pumpkin pie spice oil.
  20. Thnking of heading over to Firefly for a glass of wine. Anyone else?
  21. If you have never enjoyed a meal there, why do you keep going?! You really have to wonder how many times this person has been. I actaually thought you might be referring to the friend's friend's cousin's cousin item...
