  1. the pizza looks OUTSTANDING! i love a pie that you can't see in between the pieces of pepperoni. ledo's pizza in the d.c. area also cuts their pizza in squares. please eat pizza everyday and take pics- i live in a pizza deadzone!
  2. i'm from n.c. and have lived all over the south. i'll take a look in some of my jr. league cookbooks to see if there's something like this, but frankly, i've never heard of it. could it be like putting suet in mince meat?
  3. deep belly laughing, eyes watering, close to peeing myself...
  4. the date is marked in the 2005 book-count me in!!
  5. i managed to get a table for late saturday evening. to say that my meal spoiled me for restaurant meals in the future is not an exaggeration. i had the duck confit and it was perfect. served with lentils, it just proves that a meal doesn't have to be all foam and deconstruction to be impressive. the service was impecable. i'm a bit speechless about the whole experience. i may have to sell a kidney to go back again soon, but that's why i have two, right??
  6. i found my lc dutch oven at marshall's for $80. i use it probably 3 times per week, but that's changing now that the weather is colder and i'm making soup more frequently. i've also seen lc at t.j. maxx and tuesday morning-you just have to do a frequent shelf check to get the best bargains.

    Venison

i just received a moderate sized venison loin from some friends in Pennsylvania. i'd like to serve it as the centerpiece of a holiday meal. please give me some preparation ideas (i'd like to stuff it) along with some side suggestions. thanx!
  8. i like the bellini idea-ever tried it with POM?
  9. i will never make chicken salad for thirty after two martinis and a presidential debate. fortunately i was able to control the bleeding myself. people at the party the next day kept asking me why i didn't get my finger stitched and i said that there wasn't anything LEFT to stitch-good thing they didn't ask where the piece of finger went!! (kitchen scene was not unlike dan akroyd/julia child)
  10. my home made 15 bean soup (yes, i use a ham hock!) with billy bread instead of crackers. a close 2nd is oyster stew with oyster crackers.
  11. good on 'em!!!! just one more reason to move to canada!
  12. that is completely not fair that there are THREE d&d's in charlotte!!!! unfortunately richmond has a local grocery store mafioso and we can't get much more that food lion. (really this is another thread) are the good restaurants in charlotte downtown or in the burbs??
  13. richmond is full of little restaurants- i could go to a new place every night for months and still have plenty of variety. but i've noticed that the lack of professional restaurant staff (seems like it's mostly transient students staffing restaurants) causes problems with service and quality of food. also richmonders still seem to have the mentality that going out for chinese food is a big culinary leap. is this true elswhere?
  14. a lovely article and the analogy to bbq was fitting! i only wish that i had access to all the ingredients for these curries.
  15. ok- now i REALLY want some potatoes cooked in duck fat smothered with mayo and CHEESE. and AVACADOES-the horror!! thanx for the humor, gg.
  16. has anyone considered the size of refridgerators outside of the U.S.?? i find that when i have less food in the "reefer" and i have to go to the market daily (especially when i WALK) i tend to plan my meals more carefully, eat at more reasonable times and snack less. big american fridges are full of all sorts of crap to eat and one doesn't get much exercise going from the couch to the fridge.
  17. unfortunately for my waistline, i've been spending time at Capitol Ale House in downtown Richmond, VA. they've got great octoberfest specials going on and i've been trying to go taste a new beer or 4 on my evenings off. on sunday, i discovered a new type- Kolsch- from the area around Koln, Germany. i believe that the brand was "Reissdorf." the nose on this ale was so clean and crisp. my friends and i split a Brewer's Platter with various sausages and cheeses. i don't think i've ever had a beer which complimented food quite like this one. i'd love to hear thoughts on this type of beer and maybe some suggestions on how to get it in the states. thanx!
  18. try googling "miss finney's apple cake" don't have the recipe right off, but my mom makes this one and it's killer.
  19. OB beer from Korea-"it's the formaldehyde!"
  20. fav- italian sausages sauteed in olive oil with onions and green peppers. bad, bad, VERY bad- a bottle of vietnamese fish sauce which had been in my fridge for a long time.
  21. unfortunately there may be more bars and restaurants and houses straddling the alabama/florida border right now!!
  22. thanks for the update on the florabama- i suspected that it was gone. i have a few fond memories of the place- i guess i wasn't just imagining the flying mullet. i also have some vague memories of the strip in downtown p-cola (love those Marine aviators) looks like from the pics that it's pretty much trashed. good luck to all y'all on the "guff" coast!
  23. heard about the situation in asheville from my brother-sounds like it's a mess!! strangely enough, i was on a us airways flight to tampa on friday and read an article featuring asheville ('the paris of the south") and it mentioned a few of the places conchchowder had mentioned. seems as if the weather has wreaked havoc on the restaurant industry in the southeast this summer- three weeks ago the shockoe bottom section of richmond was under ten feet of water and flooded about 8 restaurants and the 17th st farmers market. wonder what the economic toll will be on just food from this summer's storms!
