  1. this is such a big crock! doesn't the FDA have anything better to do with it's time and energy?? i love that yogurt and had even found a source for it here in Richmond. i'm not dead, so it must be OK to eat. WTF over!
  2. bourbon and wink...does it turn out tasting a bit like a whiskey sour?
  3. Read a blurb in the Post Sunday Source about this place Cheesetique in the DelRay section of Alexandria. It's on Mt Vernon Ave. Anybody been or heard anything about it? --- [i merged this in with an existing thread. Rocks.]
  4. just received my new dansko sport clogs. the soles look more like a hiking/crosstraining shoe. bought for $89 shipping included at pegasusfootwear.com.
  5. carrot top-you must be in blacksburg. welcome Hokies to the ACC! fifi-strangely enough, when i saw the pic of the sapote/ mamey, i thought "avacado meets canteloupe.'' cool fruit!
  6. all this talk of "sh-t on a stick" has me reaching for the Zantac. best thing on the bone-smoked turkey legs at Wurstfest in New Braunfels, TX.
  7. and if you're in nova, Mediterranean Cafe in the Landmark section of Alexandria has wonderful fresh- baked pita bread and all sorts of goodies. it's located in a stripmall on south pickett street just off of duke.
  8. if you want to experience a true dichotomy in "soul food," just cruise through downtown richmond, va. on broad street. "comfort" is all hardwood bar and nice table settings and $12 entrees (good and cheap by my "fine dining" standards) this restaurant is patronized by a completely different crowd than the folks going to the fried fish/fried chicken takeouts surrounding it. i think diners in richmond would consider it all "soul food." BTW, anyone visiting richmond should try "Comfort." some of the yummiest roasted beets i've ever had! when my cholesterol is down to something reasonable i'll be hitting the fish joints on broad street too.

    Liverwurst

for all of you cholesterol/fat conscious liverwurst lovers out there- boarshead makes a "light" liverwurst. it doesn't quite spread as well as regular liverwurst or braunschweiger, but if you're jonesin' for wurst it, does the trick. i like mine on crusty sourdough with mayo, tomato red onion and some coarse-ground black pepper. oh yeah, gotta have a cold yuengling lager with that!
  10. my last SO never cooked for me- i can understand this because he had spent most of his adult life on a submarine. this actually had advantages-he was very neat, did his own laundry, picked up the tab for entertaining and he took me out for dinner quite frequently. it's been awhile since i've dated anyone sharing my interest in cooking. i have a tough time letting someone into my kitchen space. is this a culinary metaphor for intimacy issues?? did dr freud do the cooking at home?
  11. just looked at the pics on your blog and you seem to be just fine!! just remember that if it took 5 years to gain that weight, it will take some time to take it off.
  12. drive south on 13 and you'll see an sign to wachapreague. there's a place on the water called the island house restaurant. the usual eastern shore fare-oysters, flounder, crabcakes. very friendly service and a great view from both the inside of the restaurant and the deck. they have a variant on spoonbread made with cheddar cheese that's pretty decadent. i find that the best time to go there is on a fall afternoon when the sun is warm and there beer is cold. some restaurants on the e.s. have had to import oysters from as far away as new england due to bad local growing conditions over the past few years, but thiers are always local. cheers.
  13. i'm not awake enough to think of anything, but howabout just john hughes' movie inspired food?? i really had the hots for andrew mccarthy!
  14. agree wholeheartedly with pickles- GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is very common but gerd symptoms may mask other disease states- gastric cancer, hiatal hernia. chronic gerd that is self treated inappropriately may lead to more problems. the primary treatment for gerd is lifestyle change-quit smoking, cut back/eliminate caffeinated bevs, cutback/eliminate alcohol intake, and then there's the biggy---FAT! otc meds such as h2 blockers are "safe as water" when it comes to treating the occaisional "i really over-did-it heartburn," but any persistance of symptoms greater than 7- 14 days needs to be evaluated by a healthcare provider. otc meds such as tums or mylanta offer temporary relief from heartburn by simply neutralizing acid in the stomach. good luck with the gerd!!
  15. anyone had ephemere apple flavored ale?? had this over july 4 th weekend and i'm hooked now. smells like apples up front and one would expect it to be very sweet but it's really very light and crisp. also has a cool fairy on the label.
  16. had lunch at taqueria poblano on mt vernon ave in del ray the other day. very good pork tacos. 2 main dishes at lunch for $25-thought this was a good deal for the area. i'd drive there from richmond (again ) for mexican food.
  17. i think that i left 15%. yeah i guess that the soda was a picky point, but it's weird picking up a glass when you're thirsty and expecting to get water and get-bleck- sprite instead. on a good note, i went to capitol ale house over the holiday weekend. it was saturday early afternoon and totally abandoned. i was thoroughly impressed with the beverage selection and WAY out of my league. what was even more impressive was the bartender's knowlege of the massive selection. i'll give "leigh" at the bar a plug here! she was very nice, attentive and my date and i had a good conversation with her about the quality of waitrons in the richmond area. we were trying to figure out what the attitude issue is... i waited tables when i was in school and had some really evil jobs at seafood restaurants at the outerbanks AND i was hungover alot, but i still didn't treat my equally hungover patrons like crap. even when they complained, ad nauseum, about the n.c. blue laws. back to the bar conversation- we all agreed that if you were "brought up" in a fine dining environment, you tend to take your work more seriously. or maybe it's just work ethic in general. any thoughts about this pertaining to just richmond??
  18. tried big red one time in san antonio-ONE TIME-that's all it took to cure me of this drink for perpetuity. this stuff has to be the sweetest, nastiest soda ever invented. period!
  19. al dente did a few years back- i was only given the leftovers, but i thought it was great- he thought that the dough he used was too sweet. i still hold him in very high regards just for that undertaking.
  20. be sure to stop at veritas vineyard- very nice folks (brits) and great vino!
  21. i'm assuming that this doesn't apply to working dogs... i would be interested in the rationale for this law. and don't tell the dog behind the bar at tune inn about this!
  22. $1.35 each!! maybe I should have said $1.35 a pop!! thanks for the link g.g.-i feel a happy hour coming on!
  23. not much of a fan of "sweet tea" myself. but my favorite "cocola" has to be cheerwine. peach nehi's pretty tasty too and also spicy hot blenheim "gingale." is "wink" a southern thing?? been known to have gin and wink on a particularly hot afternoon.
