  1. As I read that post, I totally misread "mastication". that mis-read might be a little annoying during a meal as well!
  2. OH YEAH!! WITH ABOUT FORTY DEVIL CRABS AND MORE BEER!
  3. yeah, well notice that i mentioned carl rove too! maybe not too pleasant but from the looks of the boy i'd say that he's been raiding the gally on air force one with great regularity. i just thought that i'd throw out some names of historical icons- pleasant or unpleasant. didn't know hitler was a vegetarian- i'd be interested to hear about real or fictional dining habits of historical figures. bet i'd be transfixed as rasputin chewedwith his mouth open! (an annoying, unpleasant eating habit!)
  4. i was thinking more along the lines of aristotle, attila the hun, confucius, catherine the great, thomas jefferson, rasputin, hitler, ghandi, jimmy carter, carl rove-just to name a few-but a "fantasy gulleteer" list would be cool too!
  5. ooh-just saw a recipe in the latest saveur- quince frangipane tarts- there's the accompanying recipe for quince "fruit cheese" reckon that pears would work as well.
  6. cheer up sweetie!!
  7. oops i'm tired- i don't want to "tread" on my fantasy dinner companion!
  8. this would have to be al dente-mainly because he never smokes while I'M eating! but back to the thread at hand- it's got to be haggling over the check-usually only happens with non-foodies and it drives me f-in' nuts! how about a tread on a fantasy dinner companion??
  9. How else are you supposed to spell shitake? Shiitake. It's early on a Sunday, Rachel....i'm sure you knew this! Heh. HOLY SHIITAKE, BATMAN! funny this should come up in this context-when i lived in japan i saw some pretty amusing menu misspellings in "engrish" my fave- on a bar list "OLD GLANDAD" i don't know -maybe you had to be there.
  10. That's why I pull the paper towels before washing, turn the water off with a towel, and open the door with the same towel. I keep tissues handy in case the restaurant only has those damned hand dryers that take 10 minutes to dry your hands. restaurants could go to purell dispensers- eliminates having to touch a surface or have paper towels laying around. the wall dispensers could fit nicely in the kitchen area-staff can purell their hands frequently. i use purell at the hospital and it's cut down on wear and tear on my skin from too hot water and paper towels.
  11. pears 'n maytag blue cheese whole pears poached in earl grey tea
  12. Oh, please. Plain yellow mustard, such as French's, is a key ingredient in both the potato salad and the deviled eggs I grew up eating. To use anything but plain yellow mustard would change the character and charm of the recipe. Both recipes are delicious as they are without the benefit of "better" mustards. yeah- to each his own mustard!! and a soggy egg roll wouldn't be the same without the packet of "chinese" mustard that comes with it!
  13. grey moss is excellent and the drive is quite nice (although i'm sure s.a. has expanded out there too) biga was a favorite of mine. can't go to s.a. without a visit to mi tierra. i use to hang out at the liberty bar on st mary's- funky homestyle menu and a really cool structure- the whole house tipped to one side. try any beers from celas (sp) brewery.
  14. The zardetto can be had for $7 or so if you look hard enough... If you like the zardetto the Col Vetoraz is definitly worth tracking down. would definitely hook up on the zardetto for $7. cheapest i've seen it is at total bev in virginia-where are you? and what is this col?
  15. gawd- singha is awful!! but the beers coming out of the penn brewery are great though i don't know how widely available
  16. yeungling pilsner urquell rolling rock
  17. say that again and i'll break out my cast-iron frying pan!!
  18. gruet blanc de noirs - a nice domestic from new mexico zardetto prosecco- generally in the $10-$15 range gloria ferrer brut- a little more money oasis 1999 blanc de blanc-might be a little hard to find outside of virginia, but i have to give th local stuff a plug!
  19. not a fan of reading terminal?? blasphemy! chinatown's not bad either.
  20. i've found some of the best korean restaurants are located around army and air force bases in the u.s. yes, some are set up as sushi bars or "mongolian bbq" restaurants but there's some pretty authentic food out there. i was stationed in korea for a year and have never lost my taste for kimchi or bulgogi- sometimes i really crave kimchi! there's a pretty sizeable korean population in annandale, virginia- hee been is consistently given excellent reviews for the food. but my all time fave is in san antonio near ft sam- woo lae oak. i wonder if it' still there.
  21. i love maille as well but you can't beat plain french's mustard in good ol' fashion potato salad. i do not own ketchup.
  22. holy cow!! i hadn't thought about mos burger in years- i lived on okinawa from 1993-95 and ate there. have to say, though, that mcD's in japan was the best ever- would go to the drive through then wait in the parking lot for the fresh, crispy fries and a totally steaming hot burger! the only problem was the napkins-couldn't sop up all the burger juice with the funky napkins.
  23. cleveland park metro- ireland's four p's-especially early union station-dubliner-anytime chinatown-fado eastern market metro-tune inn (after all is said and done) beware of office grunt wearing blue shirts sitting at the bar at firefly- he is devestatingly charming and will buy you drinks!
  24. venison and green chili stew over kluski noodles-at 0100-my lunch hour! i have a big glass of red wine in the morning when i get home from work.
  25. new fav- roasted tomato soup-labor intensive at first and a hell of a lot of fresh basil for this time of year, but yummee! old fav-15 bean with ham chunks quickie fav-chicken with wild mushroom tortellini and baby spinach (stock/barrlla tortellini/throw in spinach right before serving) local fav-hatteras clam chowder (gotta have hush puppies with this)
