  1. i brined two birds in hard cider and maple syrup- had to leave them with my sig other to finish but he did an admirable job AND toted them up to the hospital to boot! best turkey i've EVER had-anywhere. i don't usually eat white meat but this aws good. had to write out the recipe several times over. worth all the effort!
  2. the best way to do this is to take the blue line metro to rosslyn and walk across the key bridge. the "exorcist steps" are right at the key bridge and "m" street. go there after your arlington cemetery stop. don't know when easter is this year but y'all might be in town in time for cherry blossoms- a really cool sight!
  3. avoid georgetown altogether-no parking , no metro access, crummy food. if you'll be in town over a weekend, go to eastern market for lunch- it's what the locals do.it's accessible by metro and it's fun to do a walking tour of capital hill.
  4. i'll be cruising down I-95 to florida next week and i want to try to find some cheerwine. haven't seen it in quite some time and none of the big truck stops in n.c./s.c. seem to have it (guess it's been replaced with starbucks double shots!) are there any chain groceries carrying cheerwine-is it still even made? thanks for the help!
  5. figured i'd blog in-cooked until 0230 this am- the only disaster was a bottle of prosecco fell out of the fridge and expoded in the kitchen. i volunteered to make turkey for work-i've got 2 15lb turkeys brining in coolers on my back porch as i'm posting. i made cornbread dressing for twenty five folks last night- found an easy reciipe in the washington post a few weeks ago- apples and apricots and sausage- the taste test was pretty good and it paired well with genesee cream ale (tough to find in the south!) made pumpkin bread pudding this afternoon and taste tested it with some neighbors- a first try and with no recipe-turned out dellish if i must say so myself. hope everyone has a succesful turkey day. victoria
  6. valdeon cabrales blue- so yummy and makes mouth/throat tingle and my cheeks red (i enjoy the thrill of eating blues because of a slight allergy!!) parm-reg- in hunks, shaved on salads, by the pound, off the small of my boyfriend's back (ok-tmi) raclette-melty, stinky, off the grill on potatoes/mushrooms aged gouda-this is sublime fresh goat feta... yes.. i know that's too many choices, but i really can't stop- i think i once spent an entire weeks pay at the cheese counter at dean and deluca
  7. this reminds me of a documentry film i saw on ifc "shalom y'all" all about jewish tradition in the deep south.
  8. thanx for your blessing katie- looking forward to pms'ing with y'all in philly sometime in the future!

    Crab questions

deep fried soft shell blue crabs the little tiny crabs that come in oysters- they roast right along with the oyster-a special treat. stone crabs can be found in water at least as far north as north carolina- i've pulled crab pots with my brother before and he used to make a killing selling the claws- you pull one claw off then throw the crab back in the water. we'd smash the spider crabs against the side of the boat to kill them-competition for the blue crab's environment. guess PETA'd have a fit!
  10. will i die if i dip cheetos in plugra butter?? can i pair this with a tempranillo?
  11. great work gg-i cycle so i can eat the way i want to-fortunately here in virginia i can ride most of the year ( i'm a wimp when it comes to the rain though!) please post pics of cheese asap- this is a staple in my diet. i'll be going to pennsylvania for the holidays and i'm hoping to procure some raw milk at one of the amish farms- we're going to have a go at making mozzarella- any thoughts?
  12. this sounds good-definitely with vodka-would you add some cranberry juice (sort of seasonal i guess) to give it some more zing?? maybe bn would be good for mulling too. any more thoughts on uses for bn than drinking it straight??
  13. loved the pic of the plantains. were they sweet or savory or both??
  14. have to say that i'm probably one of the few people in the u.s. that hasn't seen survivor.... but.... i'd take my 5 quart french oven. seems that i can cook about anything in it- and fend off attackers!
  15. this sounds like the "new crabcake sandwich" mickey d's markets on the maryland eastern shore-only without the crabmeat (or whatever crab-like substance goes in it) maybe this would go over in japan!
  16. jason-may need to warn readers that they'll have to take Zocor just to look at these pics-and you HAD to throw in the one of the BIGASS softshell-that rocks!!
  17. brings back fond memories- unfortunately the last time i was at tujagues i was desperately hungover (NOLA_DUH!) and too sick too eat. enjoying it vicariously now!
  18. cusina-cool to see someone else gets excited about discount cookware!! was the store"tuesday morning?" also cool to see that i cook my brats the Lambeau Field way. would love to visit your neck of the woods, but in the summer...i hear that the mosquitoes in wisconsin are some of the biggest around. fact or fiction??

    BEER HERE!

rich-you're in the philly area, right?? i'd be willing to drive/train up there for any gullet-type tasting events. any good brewpubs close to 30th st station/south street??
  20. I was cruising down US 13 fresh from a rather satisfying eating and shopping tour of Reading Terminal Market in Philly (a belly fulla hoagie, a cooler fulla kielbasa) when, much to my horror, I spotted a McDonald's sign advertising "THE NEW CRABCAKE SANDWICH." I think it was somewhere north of the Maryland border. Anyone else heard of this ?? Who eats this crap??
  21. i drink both, however coffee has an advantage for me-i can drink it on an empty stomach. bonus points to the one who can clue me to the chemical in tea that makes me sick at my stomach!
  22. steve klc- on closer examination of your post- yeah, the typical old town type who will spend greater than $20 on an entree won't have the most adventurous palate in the world-you're spot on about that. when i lived in east b.f. maryland i would eat in bethesda because that was closest- i thought that the restaurants were pretty mediocre-this was in '97-'98 time frame- but it sounds like little has changed. georgetown and old town both attract the tourist element- the big difference is that college parents and eurotrash (shit, did i really say that- i'm pms'ing!) seem to pay bigger bucks for bad food! amazing that it looks like there's a crop of cool new places just down the road in foggy bottom. is there such hope for old town?
  23. ooh -i saw this at trader joe's in old town alex yesterday and wondered what it was-looks interesting will have to try it soon!
  24. i lived in old town before majestic opened and after- definitely improved the dining scene. seems as though the city puts new establishments through the ringer when it comes to opening. majestic sat for months teasing me before it opened. i think the problem with old town lies not with the locals- you can easily walk to majestic. on the contrary, it appears that it's mostly old town folks at the restaurant. i usually sit at the bar when i go- just look at the jaws drop on the tourists as they look at the menu prices. the average old town "touron" won't pay for good food- or wait in line for it! the tourists just keep on moving to that chain pizza joint down the street-good- more room for me! looking forward to getting back to the area to go to majestic again and give vermillion a try. v
