hormel bought up patak? i did not know that. but it explains why the mango pickle is now called mango "relish". i was so confused by that....

next time i make the trip over that way, i will check them out. i'll be staying in this weekend, i'm afraid, since i've got the head cold from hell right now. :(

i know coke definitely does. y'all need to come visit the World of Coke exhibit here in Atlanta. I never have but apparently they have different cokes from all over the world for people to sample. i had a friend who worked in dubai for awhile, and when he came back he brought back a case of dubai cokes as favors. such a sweet little can with arabic writing on it. the actual soda tasted like salty phosphoric acid tho. not so fun. i grew up in a pepsi household, and i live in a coke world at the moment. so it doesn't matter to me. if i need caffeine i'll get whatever cola is on fountain. i rarely buy soda for myself, but every once in awhile i will buy a bottle of vanilla coke. personally the canned and bottled cokes/pepsis hurt my throat, so i just let em rest a bit after opening so some of the carbonation dies off.

hmmm...my axis of evil...let's see: 1. organ meats of any sort. also things likes snouts, tails, lips, eyeballs. basically i'm a muscle-meat only type of girl. 2. certain cooked tomatoes. i love fresh tomatoes, i like blanched tomatoes, i like tomato-based ssauces and gravies (slow-simmered). i don't like marinara sauce, i don't like stewed tomatoes...basically all cooked tomatoes between blanched and disintegrated are gross to me. 3. Green peppers. they give me agita.

you know..the musubi on the tulip can looks more appetizing to me than the one on the spam can. the spam one is too pinky looking. i want some spam now.

i agree with jenny, actually. i still would prefer to know the context, but if the meal's too unrecognizable - you lose the boys, garlic, onions and beans are definitely a no-no for the resulting smells involved. a potato bar might be a good option. along-side roasted chicken. and a tossed salad.

What's that? cherimoya/soursop/guanabana there's a couple of links in the cherimoya thread.

is this for a mixer? what's the context of the meal?

Monsanto granted patent for chapati-flour grain
tryska replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
so does this mean anytime i buy atta flour, monsanto get's a cut? i'm all for "better living through chemistry" in certain instances, but this has a certain creep factor to me. -
heh - this reminds me of when my brother was younger - he used to put uncooked spaghetti in his mouth, and then pull on his neck as if to crack it, whilst crunching down on the pasta. the first time i was shocked and apppalled that his neck was making that sort of noise, but the joke got real tired real quick. my mother used to chew on uncooked rice for some unknown reason.

hee hee - it's okay edsel - i thought maybe i had it wrong. amchur is not part of my arsenal.

hey fistfulla - my cworker just gave me the book that her doctor made her study (and tested her on) prior to her surgery, and which was an invaluable resource for after her surgery....thumbing thru, it's pretty cool - lots of good info on what to eat, when to eat, what supplements to use (both vitamins and protein), how to exercise, when to do those exercises and for how long. it also takes you step by step through the different forms of the surgery. all in all seems a pretty comprehensive resource. The book is called A Complete Guide To Obesity Surgery by Bryan G. Woodward, MPH, LCEP. the website for the book is http://www.obesitysurgery.com shge says you can get it at any bookstore, and she bought her copy at Borders, but it's most likely at amazon too. Also - i understand your wife would be reluctant to share her story or progress, however - there is a really great website, apparently with forums and places to put journals, with other people going through the same thing. My coworker likes it very much - the address for that is http://www.obesityhelp.com good luck!

Thanks, mudbug! Highly informative and well researched! The confusion between North-American "paw-paw" and the various international "Paw-Paw" interpretations crops up occasionally. I'm familiar with the custard apple (fruta do conde) in Brazil. The banana-like paw-paw strikes me as highly intriguing. I'm interested in planting some native American paw-paw trees here in Ohio. Kristin, when Aussies use the term "paw-paw", I think they're referring to something like green papaya (amchur). wait - i thought amchur was green mango?

me as well - just tin foil. that's kinda where oyu have ot be careful tho, if it's burgers or hotdogs or something. if you're not careful soemtimes the grease can get too hot and the aluminum catches fire. (not really as alarming as it sounds - trust me)

i don't like sapotas. but then again, i don't really like dates either, and they are similar in some wierd way to me. as for picking it, i didn't mean plucking it, i mean choosing one in a grocery store. and okay so you do just go ahead and bite into it.....and forgive me for not being indian enough in my guava knowledge! i'm jsut now seeign them in the stores after almost 25 years of not being aorund them at all.
-
i'm going to have to pick up a persimmon the next time i see one. my mother had them for the first time last week or somehting, and was raving about them. actually could someone help me out with a guava issue? how exactly do you eat them out of hand? i remembered doing it when i was a kid, but i can't remember how, now. or even how to pick them anymore.
-
well you can't argue they wouldn't be helpful when you are struck with sweetsop smoothie cravings.
-
love custard apples of course, and mangos. guava too. papaya - not so much. oh and i LOVE lichis. (they qualify as tropical, no?)

you need a temporary house-boy to attend to your every whim whilst you're incapacitated.

i'm not sure. i'd guess maybe 6 or 8. i know typically here in Atlanta you see the fruit sold individually for anywhere form 5.99 to 8.99 a pound. that's why it's a rare treat for me, and not something i'll buy without doing my best to ensure it's worth the money. oh and they are roughly the size of grapefruit.

i jsut learned how to use that bottom broiler this year in my old apartment. of course now in the new place, it's all electric so i have no more fun with broiling. it's jsut not the same. in any case, i've used it to make bruschetta, it's great for indoor "grilling" of hamburgers, hotdogs, etc. I've even grilled parcooked chicken in it, with great results. you do have to keep a constant eye on it or things will burn to a crips of set on fire, but i thinkt he same goes for any broiling. i typically camped out on the floor, and checked the drawer every 10 seconds. it wound up not being more than 5 minutes worth of camping tho.
