    badthings - that drawing looks about right. I used to pass cherimoyas for years in the grocery store, not understanding what they were, since they don't have the bumpy skin i remembered on custard apples from my childhood. i'm also sorry to say that grocery store cherimoyas are rarely as flavorful as the ones i used to literally sit under the tree and gorge on with my little playfriends. I keep buying them because everyonce in awhile, you do hit on that fruit in which the flavor comes alive, but more often than not, it's a pallid replica. but like i siad - these are the smooth dimple skinned cherimoyas, not the rounder bumpy-skinned, artichoke lookign ones that are in the drawing on that link.

    god i miss the days of my childhood spent in India. You could pick them right off of trees growing wild, and they were always perfectly ripe and a pleasure to eat.

    my favorite food ever is custard apple which is a cousin to cherimoya. I buy them whenever they are at a decent price and looking good at the grocers. very yummy to eat..sort of like a cross between a banana, and a pear taste wise, and like a ripe banana consistency-wise. when choosing cherimoyas it can be hit or miss tho. alast weekend we were at the farmers market and there were some very nice looking specimens. however htey smelled "off" so i chose not to buy one. ideally they should be dark green, to brownish, and soft to the touch.
  8. my mother was big on tapioca pudding. and gatorade. and sudafed. doesn't matter what was wrong with you - this would be what my mother would stock and advise. kind of like the father in My Big Fat Greek Wedding and his windex. sorry i'm not much help. :)

  10. *lol* prolly more than medium in the bulky sweater! i dunno about subdued and reasonably upmarket, but if it was me, thanks for the compliments! :) and for the under-30 comment. :D it may have been Jason - his hair is lighter- not exactly blond tho, and curly. we were in those first dry good aisles probably around 1:45 - 2-ish. (if the man was brandishing a huge jar of kimchi - it definitely was us!) that would have been a hoot if we actually did cross paths. i think i can say we were hopelessly absorbed in the shopping experience to notice anyone else around us, unfortunately.

  12. oh the baccalao! i'd forgotten about the fritters. i knew there was something other than that chickpea thing that i had liked! yeah the salt cod fritters were really good. you know if i'd had my wits about me i would have gotten some of that goat meat, and maybe made a curry or a biryani with it. (my roommate had lamb stew in the crockpot - but i don't eat lamb). the fish section was pretty cool tho - especially watching the people trying to catch crabs. hee!

I nominate ari's idea as one of the best ideas ever. it was a real treat exploring the market with other people who are truly interested in food. much different from going by yourself, or with someone who isn't a foodie. the cafeteria wasn't bad either. highlights for me were the spaghetti squash, and the samosa. the wrapper was truly authentic. ari - did you wind up finding room in your fridge for everything?

  15. that's a good idea - (the egg drop soup). it's good that they are keeping her in the hospital til she can tolerate pureed food. my coworker was home 2 days after her surgery, and pretty much did all the healing on her own.

  17. the sugar alcohols typically wind up in bars and food-like products tho - not in shakes and whatnot - i think because they don't dissolve as easily as other sweeteners in water? (don't quote me on that)
  18. oh also on the 2 oz limit - she said that's why she uses the shakes - they go in and go out, so if you nurse one over say 45 minutes, you can drink it one at a time. she said after the first 2 weeks, you can start pureeing foods - like eggs. even meats, but be careful as they are harder to digest. and most importantly is definitely watch the sugars, because they are not gonna help with weight-loss. what you might be able to do even, is take whatever the family meal is and puree the whole thing together, for your wife to eat. (that was my mom's babyfood trick when we were young)
  19. hey fist - i just spoke to my coworker about her surgery. a couple of things she told me - first off there is a book that her doctor told her to get, she will pass on the title to me, on Monday - said it's been an invaluable resource, and her doctor told her to read through that before asking any questions, because that's hte resource he would get the answers from anyway. second as far as food goes she said, for those first ocuple weeks coming back from surgery some must haves for the fridge include: 1. botteld water - it's real important to keep adequately hydrated since part of our digestive tract is not being used, and tap water can get real old real fast. 2. sugar-free popsicles - she says they were a lifesaver 3. sugar-free jello 4. broth she says you wife is most likely not gonna want to eat, but this is the time to baby your stomach, since it's healing. so i guess for my coworker the first few days were strictly clear fluids. she used protein shakes too - but her preferred brand is the atkins canned shake. she also said that it was 6 months before she could eat steak, but really she went by this mystery book, which i'll get you the name of. lastly the thing she stressed most to me was that your wife has to ge tup and move aorund after hte surgery. don't treat it as a sickbed scenario when she's recovering. she said that the first 6 months are the most important where fatloss is concerned, and do it little by little, but don't jsut lie there first few days. get moving because it will help you feel better, and will get the body functions back to normal - meaning the catheter can come out sooner. she said when she was came out of the hospital, she made it a point to get dressed everyday, and just make a few trips out to the mailbox, maybe 3 or 4 during the day. then when she started feeling better, she would go down the street a little and come back...and then further. but she couldn't stress enough how important this part was. i will let you know the name of the book when she gives it to me. hope this helps.

  22. hey fist - i just remembered one of my coworkers had GBP done, and let me tell you, she is disappearing a little bit everyday. she's gone for the day now, but i can ask her tomorrow how she's doing it.
  23. most protein powders are 100% whey protein, or a mix of casein and whey, and typically zero carbs. a meal replacement has more carbs, usually in the area of 22-24-ish gs per serving, and some of the low carb MRPs are anywhere from 2-9 total carbs per serving. a weight-gainer (used to add mass and bulk) is typically 24g protein, and upwards of 60gs carbs.
  24. myoplex MRPs or chocolate designer whey are my personal favorites. myoplex tastes good - just about any flavor works with orange juice, even the scary tropical ones. 42 gs protein in one pack. and chocolate designer whey tastes good mixed with gatorade. that will take care of sweet... actually better yet - basically 4 ozs of meat gives you roughly 24gs of protein per serving. i take in well over 100gs a day myself - i do this by drinking a myoplex shake in the morning (only thing i can manage that early, plus the flavor i get gives me some caffeine), and then ensuring i get protein of some sort or the other over my next 4 meals. ( i eat 5 a day). schielke's idea is good too - i couldn't live wihtout cottage cheese.

No surgery needed thank god. careful with the hydrocodone - only as directed, and remember to wean yourself off as soon as possible - glad to hear it';s coming along tho. sharpies are tho permanent ink pens. i label all my stuff with it. especially juices, gatorade that kind of thing. roomie known not to touch the tupperware, but if she was slow like that, i would label those too. it also wouldn't hurt to sit him down and get in his face about it.
