  1. Looks like that blog may actually be from BL themselves. Blogs are 1) easy to use and update and 2) free. Sounds like they got tired of people asking for the specials online or in an email. ← Looks more like a corporate site masquerading as a blog. I don't know how long BL will be allowed to use that site for free.
  2. Oh dear...beds. Blah. All I wanted from Savino's was some decent music. In its previous incarnation (discussed a little here) was OK in that it had some great cocktails, plenty of space and was metro-accessible, but the vibe was just wrong and the food was icky at times.
  3. This is the most fun topic I've seen in awhile!! Love it. But having never been married, I have no reception food of my own to contribute...unless you want to hear about the six (or is it seven?) weddings I've been in!
  4. But the lamb is really, really good. Had it last night. More details soon.
  5. No way should this topic drop to page 2!! Who else made soup today or will do so this weekend? I'm feeling like black bean or butternut squash on Sunday.
  6. Ceiba for churros con chocolate. A few blocks further away (14/G) but worth it.
  7. I have to admit to being mostly ignorant about Capitol Hill. Made a trip to Tapatini's at the request of a CH dweller recently and it was like visiting a whole new world. I think it's pretty cool that for non-residents, it's become a destination. I want to try Belga Cafe and now this spot (because personally I'm a fan of Mendocino).
  8. Jaleo continues to send interesting offers via e-mail. Today I received a gift certificate good for $25 off a meal of $75 or more, good at the Crystal City location only. More fine print: * Can't be used on Valentine's Day or during other special events. * Offer valid Sunday through Thursday only. * One per table. * Offer expires 3/17/05. Still a very good deal.
  9. This final comment is so unnecessary. Café Atlantico admitted they made a mistake and apologized for it. Restaurants are businesses that are operated by PEOPLE! Sometimes…. people make mistakes! Imagine that. ← I agree. That was a sufficient explanation and apology from my POV. I would return rather soon and try again.
  10. I will, but not until I have someone smoochworthy in my life. I could, though, go for a really good roast beef sandwich. bmiller, did you enjoy yours?
  11. So true. Stop being such an affable conversationalist, dude!
  12. Oh shoot...short memory on my part. Rapidly advancing age!! Merge away, RockStar (or delete completely if you wish).
  13. According to Tom's Weekly Dish Ron Reda, formerly of Dish, is offering "American favorites" with a twist. If the pie is good, I'll go. I might also go for half-priced wine on Wednesday. Has anyone been or is it too new?
  14. The menu doesn't describe them. But there's a semi-sweet dark red one, and a green spicy one. I've had them both before at other Indian restaurants so I suppose I should know what they are. Together, they really improved the taste of the samosas.
  15. I went to Delhi Club with four friends last night and we were also underwhelmed for the most part. Samosas were pretty good ($3). The sauces (chutneys - please pardon my ignorance) really lived up what might otherwise be ordinary fried potatoes. Two or three orders of these for the group. I wanted to try other things, but I was with a crew that wasn't very well-versed in Indian cuisine and half pleaded "late lunch." Naan (plain and garlic) were OK ($1.50 each). The way the order for naan was handled, though, was a little strange and made alright only by the fact that it's so cheap. We ordered one of each, but instead received at least three orders. Whatever. For our entrees we shared two dishes of dal makhani ($8.95 per) and two of butter chicken ($12.50 per). The dal was better than the chicken IMHO which, while tender, tasted of a certain mass-produced pasta-in-tomato-sauce-in-a-can. But it was still odd in that there seemed to be some legume other than lentils mixed in there...something larger like a red bean?? I dunno. But the flavor was nice. It had a bit of a kick. I just couldn't get over the sauce in which the chicken was served...very disappointing. Maybe just a bad night? Kingfishers for three of us, glass of chardonnay for another. Total before tip: $70. At least it was cheap.
  16. Sadly when we went last Wednesday it was NOT. My friend was devastated - it's her favorite - until she ordered and tasted the chicken. All better now. Last Wednesday's cafe menu was actually the briefest (is that a word?) I've seen in my six months or so of going to Palena. Minestrone soup, check. Burger, check. Fry plate, check. Chicken, obviously check.
  17. You must be psychic. We just decided to try Delhi Club. Assuming we can get in w/o a reservation (it is a Tuesday after all), I'll post feedback on the dedicated thread later.
  18. Or just go to Ceiba. They've been fresh and hot every time I've had 'em. So good.
  19. Reservations are available at OpenTable.com. Are there any signature dishes for which 1789 is known? Any "don't miss" items?
  20. Soup IS happiness. I am really enjoying this topic. Here in DC, I particularly like the version of minestrone that Palena is presently offering. Unlike a lot of red, oily, pasta-laden minestrones I have had elsewhere, Palena's features a beautiful, lighter broth, thin slices of potato, lots of "grass peas" (I'd never had them previously; to me they taste a lot like garbanzo beans), tiny bits of housemade bacon and a big chunk of housemade fennel sausage in the middle of the bowl. It's perfection and I cast manners aside to sop up every last bit of broth with a chunk of rustic bread. Other favorites: Split pea with ham or bacon Any sort of bean soup, particularly if it has some sort of smoked meat in it Corn chowder Creamy chicken with wild rice The best tomato soup I've ever eaten was at Harvest in Atlanta. Served smooth with a thin slice of parmesan as garnish. Awesome.

    sage

I agree on all accounts. The risotto I made last night (with butternut squash and pancetta) called for thyme and marjoram as well as sage. Great, great flavors that worked really well together.

    Dinner! 2005

Last night I cooked with butternut squash for the first time. I made Butternut squash and Pancetta Risotto with Spiced Butter . It tasted great last night, but even better for breakfast.
  23. A lively spot for drinks is IndeBleu. Check out the dedicated topic for more info. I haven't yet eaten there, but...it sounds pretty good.
  24. Bump! I finally got around to trying Port of Piraeus. It was pretty good - would have been in the sold "good" realm had my Greek chicken sandwich not been dripping with tzaziki sauce. If I order it again, I'll be sure and ask them to go light with the sauce. If you frequent Port of Piraeus, what are your favorite items there?
