This week's CSA. Lots of kale! Luckily we all enjoy a kale caesar salad. The giant gobble box is coming Tuesday.

Why not? Meatballs vs. roast turkey are completely different flavors. Besides, I am all about the vegetables on Thanksgiving, and usually only have one bite of turkey 😀

I talked to my Mom today about how this week's food bank went--this is the week they give out the turkeys. They were given 350 to distribute from the Greater Boston food bank allotment, and then a local businessman donated 1,000 more. She said that despite all of that, they still ran out with a line down the block. Luckily they were able to give out vouchers to the people still waiting. I am not sure where the extra turkeys are coming from--probably the businessman.

Salmon banh mi. I made Andrea Nguyen's green tomato pickle to use up the last of the unripe tomatoes from the garden.

I specifically ordered them by the piece, but you are right, they must have given me bananas by the pound. They will get used up somehow.
-
I pat them dry then use a very hot cast iron skillet, and like others have said only flip them once. The scallops are very fresh too, which helps. Last night, coconut curry fish (pollock, which is my least favorite fish that I get in my fish share. In this preparation it was OK). with tomatoes and spinach, rice and naan

I had a Whole Foods delivery today. In good news, I was able to obtain a smallish (11-12 lb.) organic turkey for their Amazon Prime price of $2.99/lb plus an extra 10% off. This is my backup turkey just in case something happens with the one I ordered from D'Artagnan. If the D'Aratagnan one arrives with no issues I will freeze the Whole Foods turkey for eating later in the winter. One bizarre glitch in the order: I asked for six bananas. They sent me 21! I guess I will be baking banana bread soon. 🙃

This week's CSA. That is a huge bag of spinach in the back. Next week, in addition to our usual delivery, they are bringing a "gobble box" for Thanksgiving. It is HUGE. I got the list of what is going to be in it today: 8 lbs. mashing potatoes, 3 lbs. sweet potatoes, 3 lbs. carrots, a cabbage, a large butternut squash, 6 lbs. apples, 2 lbs. brussels sprouts, 4 honey nut squash, 1 lb. spinach, 2 lbs. cranberries, 2 lbs. turnips, 2 lbs. watermelon radishes, 2 lbs onions, and 1 lb. leeks. I am planning on sharing with my Mom and Dad (and maybe the rest of my neighborhood haha)

I have that rice cooker and really love it. It makes perfect rice every time.

I forgot to post the picture of last week's CSA delivery. I am now officially overrun with winter squash and carrots. Luckily, my niece comes home from college next week, and will then be remote learning until February, and winter squash and carrots are some of her favorite foods.

Fish cakes again. Tonight was Acadian redfish from my share. This is not the redfish that is famous for being blackened. It is a small, abundant fish that is off New England, mostly Maine and MA. It is a sweet fish, but dang it is full of bones! So, now when I get it, I commit to poaching it and picking through for bones before cooking the final dish with it. Despite my best efforts, two bones slithered through 😒 Anyway, this was a spicy fish cake with a lime-cilantro aioli, miso glazed harukei turnips, and an unfortunate rice cake I made from leftover vegetable fried rice that I had frozen a few weeks ago in a good hearted effort to not waste food. That rice cake was not....good. The fish, sauce, and turnips were though. The plate could have used some cilantro garnish but I used the last of mine in the sauce. I need to place a grocery order....

Crab cakes with roasted red pepper remoulade, crispy potatoes, and salad. I made my nephew spaghetti and meatballs in the other kitchen. No pictures of that because I have shown it so many times....he was happy.

Tomato galette using the very last tomatoes from my garden (I picked them green before the frost and ripened them on the windowsill for a few weeks), with a salad

Dinner was chicken tinga tacos For dessert we enjoyed a glass of Terry Hoage Vineyards "the 46" grenache syrah.

I read somewhere that the little jars that spices are packed in are in short supply. It is so random what goes out of stock. In my last Wegman's order, there were no cashews, ginger, or basil in stock.

My Mom has been working behind the scenes to pack the boxes for our local food bank (she cannot hand them out as she is elderly and cannot be exposed to that many people). They distribute on Wednesdays and anyone can take a box, no ID or proof of income required. It is a massive amount of food--10-15 lbs. of meat (mostly chicken), both fresh and canned vegetables, bread, fresh fruit, cereal, pasta etc. There is a supplementary dairy box for the people who want dairy. The food bank is funded by my state (MA).

As others have said I think cost would be the hugest hurdle to overcome. I do know that in Wellfleet the fishing crews started to sell direct from the dock, and if you went there the cost was much less than buying it in the market, but you would have to live close to a dock. Last night, miso glazed salmon in miso broth with noodles, tatsoi, shiitake mushrooms, crispy shallots, scallions, cilantro, and what was supposed to be a jammy egg but I overcooked it.
