  1. So I ended up making a salad with the radicchio, mixing it with arugula, figs, and shallot-chive boursin in a lemon-maple dressing. It was delicious.
  2. Yes, the big green thing. The other big green thing is joi choy. According to my farmer, it is a fiore radicchio. I guess the outside leaves are not edible, and you have to peel back to the purple center. Thank you for the ideas! I will report back once I make it.

    Dinner 2020

It is just flounder coated in cornflake crumbs and then pan fried. The slaw is cole slaw mixed with Russian dressing. Add some swiss cheese, put everything on rye bread and toast it up in a skillet. Cocktail: basil-infused lemonade, sparkling water, citrus vodka Steak sandwich for my nephew Burrata-tomato salad Striped bass with garlic and mustard Sunset was pretty last night
  4. I shop at multiple stores (well, I did pre-Covid. Now I use instacart.) I like Wegman's for dry goods and meat, but do not like their bakery and I feel that their produce does not last long enough. They have a good wine department. Whole Foods is good quality everything, but their parking lot is tragic. Eataly is top notch, but pricey. There is a local to me chain called Roche Brothers which is excellent all around, but probably the most inconvenient for me to get to. I have shopped in Publix in Florida, and though it is better than the other options, I really don't feel comfortable there. I have been followed more than once. Workers escort you to your car for your safety. This is in the Orlando area, other stores are probably different.
  5. Here is this week's CSA box. My sister brought it out to me yesterday. She is staying with us for the next 10 days or so. Any ideas on how to use that huge radicchio?
  6. Yes, me too! It is my favorite red wine, and I don't have it often. I am going to have to think of something special to cook to eat with it. Yes, you can order as much wine as you like, or none of course. They also offer cocktail kits with all the necessary ingredients. I can't remember if you can just order the liquor on its own or not. I'll have to look when I get a link for next week's order. I don't need any of that stuff right now though.
  7. Today we got a delivery from Eataly. They are offering free delivery anywhere in the state if you spend $200. Not hard to do at Eataly! I was kind of surprised that they would be willing to drive all the way out to Wellfleet, but they did. You don't get to pick the fruits and vegetables in the order, you just say if you want enough for two people or for four people. I am excited about the fresh figs. All the other stuff is added a la carte to your order. You can also write in any special requests. We are out here for two more weeks, so all that wine will likely get drunk 🙂

    Dinner 2020

For my nephew, brother, husband, and brother in law: grilled Snake River Farms ribeye tenderloin with ramp butter (I made this butter back in the spring and froze it in a log), roasted broccolini, and mashed potatoes. This was supposed to be yesterday's dinner, but adaptation is sometimes required. You will have to trust me when I say the steak was perfectly medium rare. I cannot ask the group of people who could care less about food photos to hold up while I take multiple pictures 🙂 No chance I was eating that dinner. The last time I ate beef, I was 15. I don't care if others like it, and I will cook it for them, but it is not for me. Instead, I made a tomato sandwich with the last heirloom tomato from my CSA. I only ate half, and my brother in law has already claimed the other half for a midnight snack.

    Dinner 2020

Dinner tonight was supposed to be grilled steaks, mashed potatoes, and spinach for the guys, and corn and cheddar cheese chowder for me (no fish available thanks to Hurricane Teddy passing by). But, when I pulled the steaks out to season them, they were still frozen. Argh. Husband went flying out of the house and brought back lobster meat from the fish market down the street right before they closed. So, my husband, brother, and brother in law had chilled lobster rolls, I had my chowder, and my nephew ate a meatball sub I made. Lighting a bit funky tonight because we ate after the sun went down. No picture of the meatball sub, instead I show you tonight's sunset from the deck 🙂

Cape Cod reubens using local flounder for most Nephew won't eat that so I made him sausage and escarole soup using escarole from my CSA. It was a win win situation. He thought the soup was great, and I hate escarole except for winter soups, which I am not ready for just yet. Bonus picture: Hurricane Teddy is passing by (far away) today. The sea is way up. We went by about three hours before high tide, and this is how it looked on the ocean side. 20 foot breaking waves on the shore were predicted for high tide, and through tomorrow. Massive dune erosion, unfortunately. That's a great white shark bite remediation kit in the red box on the dune. A fixture on all Cape Cod beaches these days. I have never seen a great white myself, only partially chomped seals washed up on shore from their feeding habits.

Took a break from fish tonight, because I was too lazy to leave the house and pick up from the fish market. Arugula salad Spaghetti and turkey meatballs (meatballs vacuum sealed and brought frozen from home) Back on fish tomorrow. Leftover wine from dinner was enjoyed with the sunset....

Pizza night! No movie though, all but me watching football. Clam and arugula Smoked mussel Pepperoni for the nephew Margharita This rental house is great except for the oven. At home, pizzas are done in less than 10 minutes. Here, it took closer to 30 minutes per pie, even though I brought my stone from home. Annoying, so no more pizza cookery for the next three weeks.

    Dinner 2020

No, I never have. That would not be an option right now anyway, as my nephew is also allergic to crabs. His lobster number is zero as he has had no exposure, so we make that sometimes in rolls with pre-picked meat, or meat we pick ourselves outside, but never, ever boiling from raw. I had to go get a grocery curbside pickup at 4 PM today, and the closest supermarket is 30 minutes away, so we were very hungry by the time I got home. I had planned to make seafood pizza, but that idea got shunted to tomorrow. Instead, takeout from Blackfish in Truro, tuna bolognese Everyone wanted this (except my nephew, he got a burger haha). I should have ordered three entrees to split five ways, we have so much left over! And tonight's sunset from the deck, just as a bonus 🙂
  15. That is what I did. Thank you for the suggestion! Here is this week's CSA box. My sister brought it out to the Cape for me, she is staying for the weekend (she lives with us at home so is in our quarantine pod). My Mom was really mad that my sister waited for the box to come before heading out--she wanted it haha!

    Dinner 2020

I used this recipe, but without the dried shrimp (can't have crustaceans right now as my nephew is with us, his college is remote this semester) and no green beans, as I do not have any at the house. I used the juice of 1.5 limes to get the acid right. I also had to swap in brown sugar for the palm sugar--I have palm at home, but did not think to bring any to the Cape. Do you know what else I forgot to bring? Parmigiano Reggiano cheese! I am an idiot. I have a curbside grocery pickup scheduled for tomorrow and am getting some then. https://www.thaitable.com/thai/recipe/green-papaya-salad Tonight, linguini with clams

    Dinner 2020

I boiled them and then cut in half and roasted in olive oil and salt. Tonight's Cape Cod dinner: Massachusetts bluefin tuna* sandwich with Thai chili sauce, kohlrabi tom sum thanks to an idea in the "food in a pandemic" thread. *Massachusetts bluefin tuna is considered a sustainable local choice. I am only mentioning this because in other areas of the country bluefin that swim in their waters is not considered sustainable, and I have gotten blowback on here in the past from people in other parts the country who may not realize that MA bluefin is fine to eat. The season ends in a couple of weeks, and I probably won't have it again, because it is so rich.

Yes, it is a dried blend. You mix it with lime zest and juice, soy sauce, and olive oil to make a marinade. It is really, really, good. It works on chicken too.

    Dinner 2020

I am on Cape Cod for the next month, so will be eating lots of seafood. Last night, I made a cold lobster roll A scallop roll And brown butter lobster rolls (with an extra scallop that would not fit in my roll) No picture of my nephew's hot dogs 🙂
  23. I use a Canon D60. I don't spend a lot of time though. I have it mounted on a tripod in front of a light box that is set up in a small dining room that my husband and I used to use when we lived alone. Now that my sister and her kids live with us, we use the larger dining room. Since the lighting is the same every time, I don't have to mess with the settings on my camera. I just slide the plate in to the light box on my way to the other dining room and snap a quick picture. That said, the iPhone takes really good food photos too and I use that as well.
  24. This week's CSA box: Not sure what I am going to do with the massive kohlrabi. The fennel will go into a seafood stew once I get to the Cape later today.
