desperate meals

I think my Grandmother kind of owns this thread for her stories about eating ketchup on crackers for lunch and dinner because there was nothing for anyone to eat. (this was during the depression) For breakfast they would have a corn mush. The adults went without and had chicory. Now that is a sign of desperation.

I'm sure most of you have heard of stone soup. During World War II in China, my grandma had stir-fried stones... They also had banana peels once too - luckily by that time, my grandma had a little bit of money, so she feigned a headache and snuck out for wonton noodles in the middle of the night.

Great story, Carrot Top. Loved it.

My dad likes to tell about the lard sandwiches they(He was the second youngest of 12 siblings) carried 3 miles to school. They were one thin slice of bread with some lard spread on it and salt and pepper to make em tasted good, one per child. This was when times were good, when times where bad they didn't have the lard, just the bread and salt and pepper.

A island in a lake, on a island in a lake, is where my house would be if I won the lottery.

My dad grew up in Brooklyn in the 40s with very little money. One of his favorite treats was the "smoosh"; a hot dog bun with mustard and sauerkraut. No hot dog - he couldn't afford it!

Now, he can afford the hot dog, but doesn't eat red meat, so he still enjoys smooshes.
