from the NYT 9/10/05

organizations like the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau have begun to plot the rebirth of the city... (from Baton Rouge) New Orleans's business leaders and power brokers are concocting big plans, the most important being reopening the French Quarter within 90 days.   Also under discussion are plans to stage a scaled-down Mardi Gras at the end of February and to lobby for one of the 2008 presidential nominating conventions and perhaps the next available Super Bowl. The French Quarter, he said, could prove "key to the city's rebirth; with jobs, there'll be money to start rebuilding houses and start rebuilding the communities."

This article likens the rebuilding spirit of the French Quarter to the rebuilding spirit of the entertainment sector of NYC following 9/11 ...

[Remembering that tourism is what drives much of New Orleans' economy ...

Except that the Port dominates the tourism industry in New Orleans in terms of impacts on the economy. This is where most of the effort to get New Orleans back on track should be focused. Luckily, the port is on high ground and was not directly impacted by the flooding.

Here's post-Katrina news from Liz Williams, President, Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans.

We are already starting to plan how to pick up the pieces of our fledgling museum and help be part of the rebuilding of New Orleans.

You can be a part of rebuilding New Orleans by saving the artifacts of Southern food and culture. Hold onto those artifacts for now, but if you are so inclined, join our rebuilding efforts by sending us a check of any amount. All funds will go toward the support of the Southern Food and Beverage Museum. People are more important than things. We aren’t forgetting that. When people have no food and water in New Orleans that is part of the cultural history that we are trying to save. A devastating part, but still worth remembering. We are already planning an exhibit that can travel to many cities to tell the tale of no water and food. Please help us to do this by joining SoFAB and sending a check to 2392 Pinckneyville Rd., Woodville, MS. 39669.  Please contact us at info@southernfood.org. We will let you know as the locations and dates for the exhibit are set.

I can tell you that if you send money to Liz Williams, it will be handled right. Perfectly, as a matter of fact. She is a regular dynamo of organization and good humor.

Sure, we're gonna be back and the tourism industry will be a part of that. Hopefully, though, as we rebuild in what will inevitably be a smaller situation, population wise, some thought will be given to the future and what will benefit all of the citizens, not just those that have tourist related businesses. While the tourism industry is big bucks, the jobs that it provides, in terms of the majority of them, are low paying service sector jobs that offer 0 future or chance for advancement.

This is our big chance to do it right. The money will be there. Hopefully it will go to the best use and not just the most obvious use.
