Hey All:

Posting to the 14% thread reminded me to ask: does anyone know of Bordeauxs that taste like Gruaud Larose? The old kind, pre-1993ish. My favorite wine, and historically a bargain. It's a new-world wine now, not what it used to be.

Any suggestions on what to buy instead? Pointers to unknown bargains, of course, are especially welcome.

Thanks,

Steve

Of course, any answer needs to include "it depends on if you are tasting the wine young or mature." Moving on, the property is in the Saint Julien appellation, not far from Beychevelle. Although it has been my experience that Gruaud is more "meaty" in its youth, it matures wonderfully, and I would compare the mature wine to Beychevelle or, if allowed to go outside Saint Julien, to Pichon Baron.

Many have compared Gruaud to Talbot since both are Cordier wines and both are from the Saint Julien appellation. But, in my opinion, a mature Talbot will never approach a mature Gruaud.

Hey Steve,

Have you tried wine-searcher.com? Just plug in Gruaud Larose and the vintage you're looking for and you might find something of value.

There are also online auction houses. For example, Winebid currently has the following pre-1993 Gruaud-Larose up for auction. New auctions start every Sunday night at 6:05 PM PST.

The number in brackets is the lot, the first dollar amount is the expected hammer price range, and the last dollar amount is the current bid. Good luck!
