Dumont area

Looking for a restaurant in the Dumont area. Anybody know of anything new, exciting or worthwhile??? This area seems to be void of anything worth mentioning (I am excluding of course the Englewood area, which would include such notables a Saigon Republic, Wild Ginger and America, etc). Not fussy about type of cuisine or price range, just good food.

Thanks for the help.

The recently opened 44 Madison in Cresskill was decent, if not spectacular. For sushi, try Umeya in Cresskill, and across the street is Samdam, excellent Turkish (I think). I've heard some very good things about Chez Dominique in Bergenfield. And, we enjoy some of the more 'casual' (read dive) mexican joints in Bergenfield as well. You may be noticing a trend. There isn't a lot in Dumont of note. The only place I've heard about is Mulino's, says eGullet member Shugga: "Mulino's is in Dumont and it is very good. Owned by Cafe Italiano people in Englewood Cliffs." I haven't been to Mulino's, but we have enjoyed the Italian-American cuisine at Cafe Italiano, which is actually in Fort Lee, not EC.

If you'd give us some more idea of the type of cuisine you are looking for and how far you are willing to travel, we'll help you source out the best places.

Dumont is kind of a restaurant no-man's land; Not much there--

I think a while ago Jason spoke highly of the Beijing Duck House on Washington Avenue in Bergenfield, although the last few times I passed by the parking lot is almost empty;

Mulino's is only fair, for a better "Red-Sauce Italian" I would recommend Ciao Bella in Cresskill, nice ambience, good value. and pleasant food.

East in Teaneck is Japanese, never been, but the place is always full, even on weekdays.

Best idea: Take the 12 minute drive to Englewood!

To be honest, the only reason I was avoiding Englewood was because we dont feel like eating Asian inspired dishes tonight and that's all I know in Englewood (oh yeah and Bennies). Anywhere else you can suggest in Englewood that is moderately priced?

Thanks,

That was quite a glowing, thorough report, Marge-- you should work for one of the newspapers! Thanks.

P.S. Marge, you are not affiliated with Moon Street, are you?

Non-Asian choices:

Ciao Bella, Cresskill

Samdan, Cresskill (Very Bright Lighting)

It's Greek to Me, Englewood

Bennie's, Englewood

Cassie's, Englewood

Moon Street (see above)

Cafe Local, Englewood (Cuban-Caribbean)

Cafe Boulevard, Fort Lee

I posted a review of Moon Street by Marge Perry printed in The Record on

It's Marge Perry's glowing review, not me, Marge Teilhaber. I have no affiliation with Moon Street other than having gone there 3 times!

Good addition to the Englewood, Cassie's. I've been there. It's great.

OK, that explains it! The Record... No wonder the review sounds like it was written by the owner of the restaurant!! (Maybe it was)

There is Andiamo's in Haworth or is it Demarest?

Tri Valley Diner on Knickerbocker Ave. in Dumont has closed. A new Italian (What else?) restaurant will be opening. The head waiter from Il Mulino's is partnering with a Russian and opening a Mulino style restaurant with all male waiters, no waitresses.

It was sad to be there on their last day, where will all the senior citizens in the area go now for cheap eats?

Newspapers are considered to be copywrighted, whatever that means? I read the review in the paper and then went to the website to copy and paste into my own file for future reference. That can't be shared here? Would it be better to post the link so that anyone could go read it on the web?

it's too much trouble to post the link now that I think about it. plus the fact that links to newspaper articles only work so long. In the future I'll just say, "I have a great review of the restaurant. Not allowed to post it. Email me and I'll send it to you." Seems silly to me but if that's the way it is, I'll certainly comply.

We were there about a week before they closed. The waitresses seemed pretty pissed they were losing their jobs. The food at the (very cigarette-smokey) diner was also kind of lousy. Do you know if they're getting new cooks along with the remodel?

I don't know how sad a day it really is; the place was just a small step above awful....

The seniors also seem to hang out at another brutal place, the "Emerson Hotel" , similar ambience to the Tri Valley. They also go, lunch only, to a luncheonette on the Cresskill Monument Circle, the name escapes me, but it's of the same ilk; so all is not lost for them....

[[ Posting the link is just as easy, if not easier than copying an entire article. Just use the http:// button above the reply window. ]]

I copy and paste reviews (only good ones obviously, places I want to go to or have been to) and don't bother with the link because (a) that's the whole purpose of me doing this little exercise in the first place and (b) links to newspaper articles go stale after a while so I don't bother.

The Moon Street review I posted was a year old and I'm sure if I had kept the link at the time that it wouldn't work today anyway.

Isn't it just the silliest thing that if someone has a saved review from a magazine or newspaper that they can't post it for everybody to see? I'll comply certainly but why are we even talking about this?

Not silly at all. Copyright laws prevent all of us from posting a whole review.

Yep, a silly little nuisance called Copyright Law.

[Oh, Rosie, you got this one in ahead of me!! ]

Do you mean the Circle Restaurant (although I seem to recall something more German sounding with -mort at the end) at 412 E Madison Ave, Dumont? The place that always looks closed, next to Walgreens?

Actually, the Circle restaurant used to have a pretty good breakfast. After dropping the kids off at Bryant School, several of us used to stop there for breakfast and a chat once a week. This is going back a few years, but thanks for reminding me of it. I'll have to give it a try again.
