Welcome to Belize City

    As we descended onto the palm tree ladened Ambergris Caye I couldn't help fantasizing about all of the fry jacks, johnny cakes and salbutes I was going to consume during my stay. The food is legendary and I intended to eat my way through it all. "...welcome to Belize City", the flight attendant's voice echoes over the loud speaker. It was time to begin deboarding the plane so I quickly grabbed my backpack in excitement and braced myself for the damp, island heat that was sure to hit me on my way out. To my surprise, a cool breeze brushes my cheek as I walk down the plane risers -- the fresh scent of salt water, sea grass, and stewed oxtails, from the woman at a neighboring food stand, hung on the air.
