Best Dim Sum?

A query elsewhere by Blue Heron reminded me that I've meaning to ask: what dim sum places do you like best? I've only gone for dim sum once in seattle, after fairly constant forays in New York (Sunday morning--old chinese guys drinking very black coffee, smoking endless cigarettes, and eating indescribable things).

CitySearch has a pretty long list, but what do egulleters think?

Nightscotsman, others seem to agree with you.

A fellow named Scott Marlowe (who is qualified to judge because has a web site) sez:

Heard Fong Chong in Portland was the best dim sum between San Francisco and Vancouver, BC?  Wrong.  The best dim sum south of Vancouver, bar none is Jumbo's.  Best value.  Fresh, light, variety of ingredients.  We meet here the first Sunday of every month.  It's a ritual.

Seattle Weekly: Best new dim sum

Here's a place that screams kitsch--not just the restaurant but also the newly opened mall that surrounds it: the Jumbo Chinese Restaurant (4208 Rainier S, 760-9200). For starters, the building is painted a cotton-candy peach. Besides food you get extravagant furniture, doll-like wedding gowns, and artificial flowers--all apparently popular with a certain segment of the southeast Asian crowd. But it doesn't pay to be snooty. The dim sum here is fresh and varied. You'll find all the staples: humbow, shrimp and pork dumplings, taro cakes, rice noodles filled with barbecued pork, egg tarts, stuffed eggplant and peppers, and much, much more. You'll also find some surprises, like pungent Chinese broccoli and a melt-in-your-mouth sesame bun that seems like the Chinese answer to cinnamon rolls. Dim sum is served every day till 3pm, and Jumbo's ample seating means no lines.

I like House of Hong in the ID, especially since their remodel. They have a good variety and if you go when their busy, the food is pretty fresh.

I hadn't heard of Jumbo, but would like to give it a try....

Most women don't seem to know how much flour to use so it gets so thick you have to chop it off the plate with a knife and it tastes like wallpaper paste....Just why cream sauce is bitched up so often is an all-time mytery to me, because it's so easy to make and can be used as the basis for such a variety of really delicious food.

I just realized I haven't been out for dim sum in almost a year. The last place I went to was Top Gun, which I liked. I didn't know House of Hong had been remodelled. When I was there quite awhile ago it was ok, but my best memory of that place was while we were eating our dim sum, at the table next to us was an extended asian family, and one or 2 of the men were taking a nap after their lunch.:blink:

Jumbo sounds promising. I've driven by it, too.

I am tempted to say that we should do it this sunday!  Jumbo here we come!  Who could make it?  I am pretty sure I can.

I am there! My date picking abilities suck, so I'm glad someone else made the proposal. They have huge round tables, so this place is perfect for a gathering.

Probably shouldn't go into it much on this thread, but I had a smashing time. Unfortunately, I didn't make it out Heston's way :sad: , but I did go to St. John. And I sat right next to Vince Vaughn at Nobu. Nobu was your suggestion, nightscotsman, and oh soooo good!

I hope to go back fairly soon since it's a direct flight and all, so I will try Fat Duck next time.

I've had dim sum at most of the restaurants in Portland; Fong Chong is indeed very good.

I've eaten at House of Hong twice (only dim sum I've had in Seattle) and had no complaints (that I can remember, anyway). Jumbo is now on my list for next time though.

It appears that I have to work this weekend, otherwise the Sunday offer is something I wouldn't miss.

If someone comes up with a time and the secret recognition handshake, I'll be there if posible.

Like it won't be obvious that the rowdy bunch at the big table are the eGulleteers. You will know us. MsRamsey, I'm so glad you'll be joining us. This should be a good one. And NS, nothing says you can't make a leetle something for dessert. What time? By the way, Fong Chong and House of Louie, across the street, have the same chef and they are better than anyplace in the ID. I have very high hopes for Jumbo.

I'm afraid that no matter how flexible you are Schielke that you won't be able to change the time the Packers play the Vikings and consequently the time my brother and I watch the game.

I guess I'm not a party peeps. :sad:

I also can't make it--not because of the Packers (I have, on occasion, been known to don the green and gold, drink bloody marys for breakfast, and scream my head off at big tvs--I did go to college in Wisconsin, after all) but because I'm helping a friend move. A little deposit in the moving karma bank is always useful.

Perhaps the fur pants ate the meat-eating pants? They look manly enough! :blink:

Oh, like fur underpants aren't disturbing?

The reason those are disturbing has so very little to do with the fact that they are made of fur, my dear nightscotsman!
