The list reads like a guide to fine dining in Detroit.

Seldom Blues, along with its owner, the Southern Hospitality Restaurant Group, is on it. So, too, are the venerable Rattlesnake Club and Asian Village, the sprawling, now-shuttered $4.5 million pan-Asian eatery that sat along the Detroit River.

All are critically acclaimed eateries that define big-city sophistication -- and all of their owners are coping with delinquent taxes or loan payments. The owners involved say the financial problems mainly reflect the area's troubled economy and more competition, but some observers say the situation also calls into question whether downtown Detroit has the appetite to support upscale dining.
