Kelloggs just announced that they will be bringing back Hydrox for a limited time. Due to popular demand, the cookie will make a comeback for its 100th anniversary. Over 1300 telephone calls and 1000 petition signatures pushed them over the edge...

I'll post a link to the story when it becomes more widely disseminated

Adegiulio, thanks for your post. It got me looking for information. I always preferred Hydrox to Oreo.

I never liked Oreos or Hydrox. But I recently tried the Newman O's from the Paul Newman product line and they were delicious! I think the creme stuffing tastes better. They also come in vanilla as well as chocolate. Anyone else tried these?

Haven't tried the Newman's, but the Famous Amos cream-filled chocolate wafer cookies are pretty good. But HYDROX were always our favorites. Our household is THRILLED! All my dad could say is, "About time!"

I was disappointed by the Newman's cookies, which tasted soggy and overly sweet to me, but thought Famous Amos wasn't bad.

Since the WSJ article came out, I've looked for Hydrox in supermarkets in seven different states. Nobody who works in the stores where I've looked seems to have read the article, because all I seem to get is a "Huh?" kind of look, and at the better stores someone offers to help me find them.

It'll be interesting to see when the first package actually shows up for someone to buy.

When I was growing up, Oreo cookies had animal shortening in the filling and Hydrox used vegetable shortening, so those were what we ate.

I remember freaking out at a birthday party in the Emirates when I was eight or nine because I saw a bunch of Gulf Arab children eating Oreos. I took a grown-up aside and said, "Those have lard in them!". She checked the ingredients list and it turned out that Oreo had just switched over to vegetable shortening, thus making them viable imports in Muslim countries.

When I got back to the U.S. that summer, Hydrox were almost nowhere to found.

As was I ...I don't eat cookies much, but when I do I like 'em with a little more crunch and snap. Famous Amos has really gone downhill since Wally Amos sold the company. Big disappointment.

No wonder I preferred the Famous Amos cookies! They may not be the same, but then again...(this from Wikipedia):

"Sunshine Biscuits was purchased by Keebler in 1996, and in 1999, Keebler replaced Hydrox with a similar but reformulated product named Droxies.[3] Keebler was later acquired by Kellogg's in 2001. Kellogg's removed Droxies from the market in 2003. Kellogg's now markets a chocolate sandwich cookie under the Famous Amos brand, and some fans of the original Hydrox suspect this may be Hydrox reborn, while others find solace in Newman-O's and various house branded cookies. Kellogg's says the Hydrox recipe is unique."

I've been checking the supermarkets for the last few days. So far, nuthin'.

Anyone having any luck out there?

I got them late last week at a Shop Rite in Philadelphia. Oddly, they weren't with the other Keebler products in the cookie aisle, but only on an end cap. FWIW, Oreos timed a sale to the week Kellogg's/Keebler's reintroduced Hydrox, pricing their cookies at about a buck less for a standard-sized package.

She Who Must Be Obeyed and I did a taste test. She's got a better taste memory than I do and concluded that today's Hydrox is pretty close, though not identicial, in taste to the pre-1999 formula. (She also prefers the taste of Oreos; I favor Hydrox.) We both agreed that Hydrox was less intensely sweet. I thought Hydrox had a better chocolate taste. We also agreed that the design motif of the Hydrox was more interesting.

Strictly in the interest of science we replicated our experimental comparison numerous times, in all permutations: biting into the whole cookie; separating the sections and eating separately (including just licking the creme filling); and dunking whole cookies in milk. The scientific method demands replication and replicable results, after all.

I'm so glad that I lived long enough to see Hydrox at the supermarket again!

They're on sale at ShopRite- 2 packages for $5.00.

We bought a package and ate them while we watched the psychedlic Casino Royale film- such fun!

They taste exactly as I remembered them- more cocoa flavor than Oreos, a less sweet, and smoother filling, and crisper than other brands. Actually, I couldn't eat too many, the filling was just too rich for me.

Not being able to eat more than 5 servings is probably a GOOD thing- yes?

I found them at Stop & Shop in Groton CT. They were in a special cardboard display rack next to the milk... they had a coupon attached to the display that gave you free milk if you bought a certain amount of cookies.

They weren't quite as good as I remembered, but I still enjoyed the bit of nostalgia.

Success!

We were out yesterday, and of course I had to look at Price Chopper. No luck. But I hadn't gotten my $130+ million lottery ticket, and the line at Price Chopper was way too long. So we headed over to P&C, and there they were on the shelf with the rest of their cookies, 2 packs for $5 if you have their card. I got two, as well as the aforementioned lottery ticket.

We opened the cookies after dinner yesterday, and they were about what I'd remembered, although I don't ever remember seeing a package like what's being sold now. The wafer part itself is nice and crisp but not overly sweet, although my husband thought they weren't quite as chocolaty as the equivalent part of an Oreo. The filling was nice and dry, not at all goopy, This particular batch of cookies yesterday night was at about the right temperature that they were easy to open up, leaving the filling all on one side and giving you a plain wafer to savor. I'm less about the filling, and more about the wafer.

I'd definitely get more of these. I wonder how well they'd hold up in the freezer, if they really are a limited-time-only deal.

And the lottery ticket? Apparently there was one winning ticket sold. It wasn't ours.

Finally found these today at FoodTown ($2.88). I have been looking everywhere and concluded we weren't going to see them here in Houston.

I'm still not sure if I've ever had these before. My Mother loved to bake and we ate almost exclusively home-made pies, cakes and cookies growing up. I remember the first time I ever had an Oreo in college wondering what the big deal was - I wasn't impressed.

These are definitely better. It's a shame they're not on the market any longer.

I'll be going back to get some more packages to supplant my usual guilty pleasure, cheap Mexican baras de coco.
