I had never been to guatemala .Its always been its neighbor to the north ,Mexico ,where i have been at least 30 times.

Guatemala is a very interesting country ,with its mountains, lakes and mayan history. Also its very reasonable.Dinner in their best restaurant is $15-25/person, depending on the chosen wine.

The country is mexico of 30 years ago..NO malls, major freeways ,etc so it's untouched ,fortunately.

Overall the food is OK,but nothing special. The best is local cuisine ,rather than an attempt for sophistication.

In guatemala city i went to Jakes ,presumably the best restaurant .IT was a mixture of american, italian and contemporary.

i ordered blackened fish and ceasar's salad.THey were OK ,not bad. However i enjoyed more Hacienda Real with its open air seating and succulent local steak, tender and juicy and cooked right.SErvice in both places was excellent .

IN Antigua one of their best restaurant is Welten, which provided international tradional cuisine.Again OK and in very nice surroundings. My favorite was la fonda de la caille real, where i ate 3 times since they offer local specialties consisting of meat cooked in chillie and coriander, served with rice and frijoles as well as tortillas.Simple but tasty .I ususally drank Moza a german type local dark beer.
