Peppero time! 11-11-07

Recommended Posts

Hubby got this from one of his 5th Grade student today. It was really sweet of her since hubby wasn't feeling well today.

Peppero wannabe in a box. It actually said "Chocolonglong" on the side of the box in teeny-tiny letters.

The peppero sticks are about 4 inches long.

There will be more peppero hauls in the coming days.

doddie, I read your post sooooooooo fast that I thought you said "choco long dong"

mwahahaha I laughed so hard <3

Same thing happened to me too! I had to reread it to make sure I had read that right.

Doddie,

Hope Hubby is feeling better, and it was really sweet of the student to give him a box. I can't wait to see what other types of peppero/pocky/generic stick like pastries come out this year. Some are really tasty and others are kinda disgusting. Where these ones any good?

Edited to change spelling.

Milgwimper - hubby feels a little better (still not out of the woods yet). Thanks for the positive thoughts.

I bought 3 kinds of Peppero today and will post them tomorrow. It's past midnight here and we're all pooped from a long day at the Icheon Rice Festival (which warranted an unexpective trip to the ER because of a dogbite).

Here are the Peppero boxes that I got for Billy and me.

The original Peppero.

This one is coated with crushed almond and chocolate.

This is Billy's favorite... the inside-out Peppero. As the name suggest, the chocolate is in the inside of the cookie stick.

I like the looks of the ones with crushed almonds. I wish I'd known about this a week ago!

(Yeah, I know, the leaves are wonderfully coloured now).

So, let's get the controversy going. Are the pepperinos the originals, or are the pockies?

We could start a whole new conflict!

Wow, what a coincidence. I have this same box at home. I didn't know that it was called "Peppero". I just assumed that it was called "Pocky"! No wonder the lady at the Korean Market looks at me funny.

Pocky was first sold in 1965. Pepero came out much later in 1983.

What! You're going to rely on facts?

Maybe they were created in Japan by Koreans brought over by the Occupation Forces after the annexation in 1910?

Diplomatic answer (when in Korea): "Pocky? Never heard of it!"

So the diplomatic answer when in Japan is "Peppero? What is that?"

Here is the shot of the Peppero aisle in our village mom&pop store.

The green almond covered ones and white inside-out ones are on sale for 3 boxes for 1,500 won. The red original ones sell for two boxes for 1,000 won.

  • 2 weeks later...

More pepero from post-pepero day...

Lookie at this cute goodie box. It had three foil packs of half-sized pepero.

Two boxes from 2 different students of hubby.

The middle box (original) was another gift to hubby but the dark ones were hubby's "pasalubong" (Filipino term for gift brought home) to me.

Hubby bought this box of Micky peperos to give away to his students. He said he was mobbed class after class.
