Looks like they put in some batter to stick them all together. Actually, looks pretty good to me. --I misread your post at first so this post has been edited.

I actually had a pretty decent ahi poke at the Irvine L&L not too long ago. It wasn't the greatest, but it was better than I thought it would be and went well with the mac salad.

Hehe, I don't do this with dong geu rang ddaeng, but the scenario sure sounds familiar... thanks for clearing up the meat jeon thing. I guess I just assumed it was the ground beef version and now I understand why you said that Korean people wouldn't treat a good piece of beef like that because beef is expensive there.

If you get a chance to go to Mashti Malone's or Bert and Rocky's Cream Co, would you mind reporting back? Actually, I'd love to hear an newcomer's report on any of those places. thx
-
Yeah, we make these too, with and without dipping it in egg. I'm not a big fan actually.

Interesting. I can tell the difference when I eat them in other things, but in patbingsu, I have to admit, I can't really tell. It's always covered up with other stuff too so I can't really see it. Maybe I'll follow your lead and make them put a ton in. I'm pretty happy with my usual though.
-
Hell no, they're all over the place here. At least they used to be; I haven't searched them out in a while. I used to get them at the school cafeteria and I grew up in SoCal. I know I've seen them around.
-
very true melonpan. But is what we are getting on our patbingsu misutgaru (roasted multigrain powder) or konggaru (roasted bean powder) I could swear I asked for more misutgaru one time and they didn't correct me but memory is vague.

Hey wait a minute, does frozen custard and gelato count? Stricklands is pretty good, but like jamesaru said, I don't know about driving an hour to eat it. Also, I know there's other frozen custard stands in L.A. I just can't think of the name. strickland's thread

Dang, you really are Korean. But what is chicken rice? You should be eating plain rice or rice mixed with grains or beans and stuff like that, to be truly one with your people.
-
Personally I think it's like pornography. Everyone seems to think they know it when they see it but they just can't describe it.
-
Interesting. I don't recall ever having had noodles in nakji bokum (octopus stirfry). Just lots of octopus and veggies in spicy sauce.
-
Hmm, you might be right. Misutgaru is kind of expensive. I keep forgetting to ask exactly what it is.

I hope this doesn't let you down, but L.A. doesn't strike me as an ice cream town. Here are some recs to peruse, hope they're of use. When in Pasadena, I go to this place called Fosselman's and though I don't know if you'd think it's as good as what you had in Nantucket, I like it. I like how they have Asianified flavors like lychee and taro along with the usual suspects. Fosselman's website If you're ever in OC, there's this place called Han's Homemade Ice Cream. I think the ice cream is really rich, richer than Fosselmans, but a bit of a drive for you. Haven't been here in a while because there's this new gelato place that opened up near me. Han's 3640 S Bristol St, Santa Ana (714) 979-8815 Mashti Malone's is this Iranian ice cream place in L.A. Haven't been myself, but it's always sounded interesting to me and I should probably try it. Most of the flavors have rosewater in them. Mashti Malone's Here's a website of someone who had the same question you did and what they found

noodles in cold soy milk but only when the soy milk is thick, rich and extra creamy.

I also like the feet in black bean sauce at dim sum, but not the white ones. I think I've heard the white ones called "crystal" style or something like that. I haven't had it in soup yet, not a Korean thing that I know of. But I'm guessing that I'll probably love it.

I failed miserably. I didn't go to NY this year so didn't get to try most of the stuff on the list. Definitely next year though. But I got to all the non-NY places and many more besides.

There's this really religious family I know with two sons. The second son was I think about four years old when i took the mom and her kids out to dim sum one time. Really good place, Koi Palace near SF. Anyways, I ordered all the most innocent looking stuff for them and then the second son starts yelling after one of the cart ladies. Apparently she had just shown her chicken feet wares to another customer and he wanted it. His mother tried to dissuade him from getting it "you won't like it honey, that's nasty" but he was not to be dissuaded. Little boy got his black bean chicken feet and he and I split the order. He sucked on the bones and spit them out perfectly on his first try. This is the same kid who will yell out "I'm drinking the blood of Christ!" when he's drinking grape juice. Also, he informed me that he couldn't have the body of Christ because the biscuits were in the oven. Like I said, very religious people here. He also violently rips the heads off shrimp and lines up the tails in a neat row on his plate.

I love Paula Dean. I mentioned in the other thread how I like to talk in her accent after watching her show. Unfortunately, I can' eat the stuff she makes (too much fat for me and I'm lactose intolerant) but she's a lot of fun to watch.

As far as I'm concerned, Jamie O has NUTHIN' on Tyler. And I'll say this publicly, just in case he's lurking...Tyler, you're is welcome to show up in my kitchen ANY day!! ← You don't have to worry about Tyler lurking on eG. More likely your hedges if you're at all presentable. ← Weird. He's a pretty good looking guy, seems to me he should be fighting them off and not the other way around. He also cooks, most girls would swoon over that alone.

I enjoy speaking in Paula Dean's accent after I watch her show. I like her personality, very warm and friendly.

Surprised nobody has mentioned this yet on the board, but the Dine About Town thing is about to start again in Jan. SF Dine About Town Promotion On the other board, some have mentioned that there might be some ripoffs and after looking at the evidence I agree. Still, there might be some interesting meals to be had. What places are you guys thinking about dropping by for the DAT promotion? I'm thinking about One Market and perhaps Seasons at the Four Seasons.

all I can say is I don't like the Trader Joe's frozen hargau and shiu mai. Bought it once as a curiosity.
