  1. Accodring to the radar map on Weather.com, all the rain appears to have moved off to the northeast and we ought to be OK for the rest of the afternoon, unless one of those afternoon thunderstorms pops up.
  2. Susan: What is that rub you put on the briskets? And I see you left the skin on the butt. I have a butt on the smoker right now and I peeled the skin off before I put it on. My rationale for doing so is my belief that the skin will prevent smoke from penetrating the meat. I don't know if I'm right on that or not, but we certainly have a potential basis for comparison going here.
  3. The pork shoulder went on the smoker at about 8:00 this morning. The plan is to take them off at about 8:00 this evening.
  4. I've got about 15 lbs of pork shoulder in the fridge brining. It'll go on the smoker tomorrow first thing. My plan is to put it in a warm oven tomorrow mid-morning and warm it up so that it will be ready to "pull" tomorrow at about 1'ish.
  5. If I bring the Weber, there will not be room for the dog. I vote for the Weber, some of us are allergic to your dog. I find it hard to believe that people who have never seen my dog could be allergic to him. Or perhaps you meant that some are allergic to dogs in general, not just specifically to my dog.

    Steak Marinade

If you beat your meat long enough, it will eventually become tender.
  8. What ever you do, nobody wash your car or water your lawn, both guaranteed to cause rain. As far as grills are concerned, I might be able to bring my Weber Performer, if folks could help me carry it to the picnic site. I don't know how far the site is from the street. Also, are dogs invited? Last, according to Weather.com, there is a 60% chance of thunderstorms on Sunday, with 13 mph wind out of the east northeast (for those in Alexandria, be prepared for a "Blue Plains Special") and a high of 79 with 88% humidity. Does it make any sense to move the picnic to 1:00. Usually, the storms come up later in the afternoon.
  9. My favorite is the veneralbe Ventworm Nut.
  10. I would check with Shumans Bakery on Washington Street in Alexandria. I was in there the other day buying a cake off the shelf for my kid's 10th and there were several people picking up cakes they had custom ordered. You might call them and see what they are capable of doing for you.
  11. I could bring my daugher, she's a lifeguard. Assuming we do this on an evening when she is not lifeguarding. And she is a big fan of Chef Michael. Edited to add: We should do this at a time when the most people are available. I've tried to organize something twice, and the exercise is akin to herding cats.
  12. Does anyone have a handle on how many people are coming to this shindig, so I know how much pork to pull?
  13. Here is a link to their wine list. I am not so sure that half-price for some of those wines is a bargain, especially the reserve Bordeaux.
  14. The Philadelphia Cheesesteak Factory in Georgetown isn't bad. It's no Philly cheesesteak, but for DC it's pretty good. When the Eagles were in the playoffs the place was full of Philly expats. Al's Steak House on Mt. Vernon Ave. in Alexandria has good Philadelphia style cheese steaks. It's been there since 1956. I ran into Al in line at the Giant one day, he was buying a case of lettuce because his supplier apparantly left him in the lurch.
  15. Put the pork butt on to smoke at 8:00, had a nice sail in the Narragansett Bay, then had pulled pork, potato salad and corn on the cob.
  16. Oceanaire: No deals on drinks, but half price appetizers including fresh oysters, until 6.
  17. Harris Teeter has Boston Butt on sale this week for 88 cents/lb.
  18. My belt still has a couple of notch's left. Plus, the picnic is on Sunday, Ray's is closed on Monday. There will be an appropriate interval for folks to fast.
  19. I will "not" be bringing any coleslaw for use on barbeque. I'm from Missouri and we do not use coleslaw on our barbeque. Plus, I don't like coleslaw. So, if anyone wants coleslaw with their barbeque, they had better look for their own source. Forewarned is forearmed. I will be bringing some regular hamburger buns for the barbeque, unless the Gold Crust Bakery has something that I think would be better.
  20. OK: First, lets find out which week has the most people available. Please let me know which of the following weeks are good for you, and which day during that week you are available. Keep in mind that Ray's the Steaks is closed on Mondays. Week of July 5 Week of July 12 Week of July 19 Regards Mark edited toi add: The further out we go, the more likely it is that would could get in a little later than 6:00.
  21. I just use the tongs to operate the vent. Ronnie, you have the Performer, so do I (only mine is green). I have replaced many parts, including the bottom part of the kettle. Weber maintains a great supply of replacement parts. I have even replaced the gas jet. Then, my dog chewed up the gas line. Home Depot fixed me up with a solid copper replacement. Never get rid of that unit. No matter what wears out or rusts out, you can replace it. Use some Dawn Power Dissolver to clean the stainless steel cover. PS: Spring for a cover for the entire unit.
  22. I had a 5 guys experience this weekend myself. Took my two boys to the Old Town location. I had a bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and onions. I agree that the chopped onions leave a lot to be desired. I expected sliced onion. The burger was beefy with lots of flavor. The 2 guys agreed that it was much better than the fast food they are accustomed to. They want to back. The 3 of us could not wipe out the large order of fries, which were great. They reminded me of the fries you get at the beach.
