  1. McD's is adding a new menu item in some select California McD's restaurants: "McDonald's to sell garlic fries at more California locations"

    Adios Twinkie

Resurrecting this old discussion to mention that Hostess survived after being bought out. I am only mentioning this to post about the "revival" of their Suzy Q's. They should have let them die a dignified death. Instead, they're passing off a terrible version of Suzy Q's as the real thing. Here's a picture of the original Suzy Q's compared to a picture of the new box of the revived Suzy Q's: The original Suzy Q's were a denser cake with rounded corners. You could squish the cake top and bottom together and the filling would ooze out which could then be licked. The new Suzy Q's, as you can see from the picture on the box, are just slices of some sort of chocolate cake with filling between them. Someone in the company thought a reinvention was due because it's obvious they are baking giant sheet cakes and then just cutting them to size and slapping the filling between the slices. It looks like a cost-savings move and it's pretty bad. And there's nowhere near that much filling (as pictured on the box cover) in the new Suzy Q's. Whatta con job. The cake isn't dense. It's really kind of dry. It is a huge disappointment for anyone looking for a nostalgic kick from these snack cakes. They're nothing like the original version and Hostess should be ashamed that their logo is on the box. I can't recommend these at all.
  3. I did a double take when looking at your picture. At first glance, I thought is was okra! Hope it all turns out well.

    Aldi

I got a advertising flyer in the mail from Aldi's. I'm so on top of things I didn't even know there was one in town! I see in the flyer the previously mentioned dehydrator and to my surprise, Porterhouse steaks advertised for $6.99/lb. Zoinks! Guess I'll have to meander over this week to see it all for myself...
  5. Hmm...the recipe calls for "1/3 cup of baking powder cooking oil". That ingredient has me stumped...never heard of it before. A typo, perhaps?
  6. I think you're right on track. Avocado has unctuousness and not much in flavor. At my local county fair, I tried the deep fried avocado slices which tasted of...wait for it...nothing. Yesterday I finished up the last of my TJ's dried Mandarin Orange slices, Makes me wish I still had my own dehydrator so I could make them myself. Like I would...yeah, sure.
  7. Sorry to revive such an ancient discussion but Chick-Fil-A is changing some of their menu items: "Chick-fil-A says goodbye to spicy chicken biscuit" Egg White Grill? My, doesn't that sound appetizing. What's next? The Kale Quinoa Acai Chicken Wrap? You are informed...and yer welcome.

    Jack in the Box

Something new on the horizon at Jack in the Box: Jack’s Brewhouse Bacon Burger (click) No info from the "article" other than that it looks quite tasty. Not sure when it will debut...
  9. You can go to www.smile.amazon.com and, following their instructions, designate/select eGullet (or the charity of your choice) and every time you make a purchase on the smile.amazon.com web site (which is basically the same as amazon.com) a small portion of your purchase price will go to your designated charity. Easy peasy!
  10. It looks sort of like an opener for tabs on cans. Here's something similar looking on Amazon (click). Not sure what the business on the other end is intended for.
  11. Ten years ago Jason Perlow posted this dicussion "40 Years of Slurpees". Time has flown and 7-Eleven is celebrating 50 Years of Slurpees today. On 7/11/16 (today) you can get a free Slurpee (albeit, a small one) from 11am to 7pm. Brain freeze to go! Not much has changed with the Slurpees but now they do offer an app for true fans of the semi-frozen concoction (click and see the bottom of the short article). Any takers?

    Dinner 2016 (Part 6)

Shelby, that rocks. I feared for your garden after you mentioned the surprise hail storm that seemed to decimate it. Nature will out.
  13. From a post in the current "Manitoulin Unravelled" discussion: "Had to make the mayo before I could assemble the sandwich." - Kerry Beal
  14. Thanks to everyone who weighed in on (pun intended) the "lbs vs cups" question I had about the Plum Sauce recipe!
  15. Jason, well said. I completely agree with your assessment of the despicable behavior on the part of Alphabet/Google and their murder of the Revolv product. And they want me to buy their Nest product now, instead? Only to have them kill it when they come out with something new and improved? Uhm...No, thank you, you Corporate asshats! (By the way Norton did the same thing a few years ago. They sent out an "update" on an older business anti-virus software that effectively killed the software. I had to, ironically, Google for a fix that revived the software). My mom blithely buys all the extended warranties that appliance sellers offer her when she buys their appliances. It turns out that the "repairmen" who come out to her place to investigate an appliance that is no longer working don't know how to make the needed repairs! It's easier to just order her a new appliance to replace the old one. She hasn't had to buy a new dishwasher in years since the ones that stop working just get replaced with newer versions.
  16. Thanks for posting the link to the recipe. But there must be a typo in it. It calls for 3 & 1/2 pounds of sugar. Surely they must mean cups of sugar, instead of pounds. Right?
  17. Starting today, June 20th, McD's restaurants in New England or the Albany, NY, area are bringing back the Lobster Roll. "McDonald's brings back its lobster roll" Has anyone tried this sandwich?

    Jack in the Box

JIB has a new BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger (my guess is it's a limited time menu item). It's very "meh". The Western Bacon Cheeseburger from Carl's Jr/Hardee's is a much better version of this burger, IMHO. JIB offers either a sweet BBQ sauce or a spicy BBQ sauce with the burger which I thought was completely inconsequential to the overall burger. One would think it would be something to make the burger shine or stand out, but it doesn't seem to do much for the burger. JIB also adds lettuce and tomatoes to their BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger, which Carl's Jr/Hardee's doesn't put on their version of the burger. Save your money for JIB's Swiss Mushroom Butter Burger, instead.
  19. So I'm no longer on speaking terms with Trader Joe's... My local TJ's has a refrigerated section in the back of the store where you will find pre-packaged green salads, potato salad and wraps (like buffalo chicken, etc). At the bottom of the section they used to have pre-made entrees like chicken enchiladas, meatloaf, lasagna, etc. I say "used to have" because, as of a month ago, they no longer carry those entree items. Last night when I went back to see if they had brought back the pre-made entrees I encountered a customer who was looking for the chicken enchiladas entree and was practically weeping when she found out that TJ's no longer carried them. TJ's replaced all of the pre-made entrees with what looks to me like Costco/Kirkland-type packages like Pulled Pork, etc. This has irked the hell outta me, removing what was a great item and replacing it with something I can buy just about everywhere else. Really? Now my love of TJ's has become tainted with disappointment. Such a sad day... edited for clarity
  20. Wow. Something new in my local grocery store: Ruffles (made by Frito-Lay) "All Dressed" flavor (click for an article on them). I guess this flavor has been out for awhile but have only recently appeared on grocery shelves in my area. I don't get the "paprika" mentioned in the article. Upon first taste, I get the BBQ flavor (plus a little sweetness), I taste some sort of cheese flavoring, a wee bit of vinegar for a nice slight tartness and even a hint of bacon. They should have called these "Everything But the Kitchen Sink" flavor. They're strangely addictive and, on the plus side, they're Ruffles...the chips have ridges so they have some body to them. Two thumbs up!

    Jack in the Box

A short while ago JIB introduced their Double Jack. It is a double patty cheeseburger. I think it's huge (and tasty) and could easily be cut in two to share with someone. One minor caveat, though...if you order this through the drive-through, make sure you pronounce it clearly. Sometimes the employee on the other end of the speaker thinks you said "Jumbo Jack" instead of "Double Jack'.

    Food Fraud

I think that's why it pays to get to know who you are buying from. At my local farmer's market, there's a produce broker who has one of the largest booths (and the longest lines). I refuse to buy from him since the produce could have come from half a state away. What's the point of a farmer's market if you're not buying locally grown produce?
  23. I don't have a scan of the wrapper but I just belatedly tried a Snickers Xtreme (belatedly because it's been around for a while). It's basically a Snickers bar without the nougat. So it's just more nuts and caramel, all covered in chocolate. It's not a memorable candy bar. I think I miss the nougat. Go figure...
  24. Did the peanut butter powder make any difference in the flavor?
  25. Superlative! They look gorgeous. Well done!
