And how does it taste? Worth the effort?
-
The Cotton Candy grapes were "invented" here. As the article pointed out, they're expensive as heck. You can't even buy them in the grocery stores here. You have to go to local specialty shops (some shops are even non-grocery) in town to buy them. I'm not saying this from the point of view of the Fox in Aesop's "Sour Grapes" morality fable as I've never tasted them, But green grapes are sweet to begin with and now you're making them taste like Cotton Candy? Really? What's next...potatoes that taste more "potatoe-y"?

The article: "RIP, arteries: A state fair-themed restaurant is opening inside Walmart" The restaurant opens in about a week's time. Anyone near Plano, Texas, and willing to take one for the team? They had me at "deep fried bacon hash browns".

McD's has resurrected the "2 McPicks for $5" here in my area. They've added back in a fourth item. Now the choices are: 10 Piece Chicken McNuggets, a Quarter-Pounder with Cheese, a triple cheeseburger (), and the Filet o' Fish sandwich. As before, you can mix and match or just order two of the same item. Game on!

"Healthy Junk Food" YouTubers take on comparing the secret recipe used on home-fried chicken versus KFC chicken (click). They slathered the chicken with the spice mixture and brined it in buttermilk before eventually coating the chicken in the flour & spice mixture and deep frying it. The woman in the video, like Lisa mentioned above, said she really noticed the saltiness. Making the spice mixture would certainly be a quick way to use up the content of my ancient cans/jars of spices and herbs sitting in my cupboards!

Don't think of it as trying to get rid of excess zucchini. Instead, you're spreading the "Gospel of the Zoodle".

Just noticed a rather funny (as in "The Adams Family" funny) pair of tongs used in one of the KFC "Crispy Colonel" spots: Chicken Feet Tongs! Macabre and funny at the same time. Chicken feet tongs are a real thing (check eBay or Etsy), but they're usually not so...realistic.

Your Daily Sweets: What Are You Making and Baking? (2016 – 2017)

Still hitting the paywall using that link. Here (click) is the recipe posted on KCET's web site. So, there, ATK! Nyah! -
Yes. This. What passes as KFC fried chicken these days is but a pale knockoff of what it used to taste like. It's likely the bean counters eliminated some spices to save money thinking no one would taste the difference. Really?

I believe it's officially called a Broaster. A local diner near my mom has one. They make very good fried chicken...not tasting like the Colonel's but tasting much more like the fried chicken my mom used to make...when she still cooked. I have a silly question about the handwritten recipe pictured in the article. It uses "Ts" for the measurement. Is that tablespoons (because the "T" is capitalized), or do they mean teaspoons? Either way, the ratio would be the same but the difference in measurement would impact the final taste of the chicken breading. Anyone?

The word "exclusive" in a restaurant's description always raises my hackles. I tend to steer clear of such venues. As Groucho Marx once said "I don't want to belong to any club that would accept me as a member."

Costco rotisserie chickens are huge compared to what you get in the supermarket...and usually cheaper, too!

Thanks for the info!

Your description and pictures got me salivating! Did you follow any special recipe for the pickles?

Funny you should mention this. In the most recent issue of Southern Living magazine, their "Grumpy Gardener" column received almost the same question. The reader couldn't understand why his zucchini plants, which had oodles of flowers, didn't produce any zucchini. Grumpy said sometimes you get a male zucchini plant which produces flowers but no zucchini. It's the female plant that grows the zucchinis. Basically, Grumpy told the reader they were out of luck for this year and to replant next year and hope you get female plants. Who knew?

Chris Kimball is leaving America's Test Kitchen - contract dispute

Sure. And he comes across as having a stick up his ass. You'd have to pay me a helluva lot of money to work for him (not that anyone has asked me to ). -
Another eG discussion/memory: "How Do You Gild the Lily? From the initial post launching the thread: I can't read that discussion on an empty stomach.

Expiring this Sunday night (8/21), Penzey's is giving away a 1/2 cup jar of their BBQ 3000 seasoning, no purchase necessary. If you get their emails, you just print out their coupon and bring it to their store. If you shop in their online store:

In my morning musings, I figured this might be good for a family that has kids. Extra incentive to eat their meals/sandwiches... edited to add: This reminded me of the ancient eG thread "The Toast-N-Serve Magic Bag"

I'm sure this may be old hat to some of you but I've never seen this before. "Cinnamon roll pie crust puts a brilliant spin on the late-summer pie season" I thought it looks awesome and I'm sure it tastes just as awesome. From the short article: It makes me wonder, though, if an apple pie or pumpkin pie baked in such a crust would be too much spice. Perhaps something simpler, like a vanilla custard pie, would be better so the crust would add to and not compete with the pie filling. Still, the crust sounds intriguing...

The Toasteroid...It's a crowdfunded toaster (the crowdfunding part is over) that allows you to "print" designs on your toast through an app. Here's their sales pitch on YouTube: "Toasteroid Campaign Video" Art as food...though the toast looks like it needs a little more toasting, IMHO.

So I tried the other 2 flavors last week. The Greek Tzatziki Sauce flavor was nothing new. Lay's had a Greek Gyros flavor in their last "New Flavor" competition and the Greek Tzatziki Sauce seemed to taste the same. There was a creaminess to the chip (probably a cheese powder) and you could taste dill. It was a "Wavy" chip which meant the chip had ripples/ridges, which I prefer when I snack on chips. To completely usurp Gertrude Stein's famous quote, there's more "there" there with these chips. The Tikka Masala chip was "Kettle cooked", which seemed to have more crunch to it than a regular potato chip, which was nice. My Indian food knowledge is lacking but I think it had all the right spices. It definitely has that "Indian" flavor.

I've always enjoyed the FoodBlogs. bleudauvergne's blogs from France were quite enjoyable for me. She had a natural eye for photography and, like many of the eG bloggers, had a gift for writing and storytelling. From her third eG Foodblog concerning her butcher's retirement : I think eGullet was ahead of the curve when it came to food blogs and a claim could be made they paved the way for personal web blogs.
