It's the same with the Aldi's here. They built it in the SAME SHOPPING CENTER as the Super Walmart. Aldi's must be staffed by corporate European idiots who think they know what they're doing and obviously don't. Who builds an Aldi's literally right next to a Super Walmart? Unless there's some sort of psychological/financial reason I'm just not seeing here... I thought the plastic single-use bag ban was for grocery stores only. I was thrilled when I discovered Home Depot still gave out the single-use plastic bags. I recycle them/use them again & again and was ticked off when the voters voted to ban them. Idiots. I think Aldi's does a lot of things Trader Joe's doesn't...sort of like an opposite Trader Joe's. Trader Joe's has a large produce section and wine and cheese section. Where those sections are a lot smaller in Aldi's. Aldi's has a much larger selection of canned goods/boxed goods than my Trader Joe's. Plus, Aldi's sells small appliances, chairs, toys, etc. that Trader Joe's doesn't (not that I would buy something like that from an Aldi's). Oh, and did you know that Aldi's and Trader Joe's are "related"? They both come from the same European company. If you Google their histories, you can trace them back to the same parent company. And Andie, thanks for the recommendation of the ENVY apple. I will keep my eye out for them. They sound interesting.

Just in case any is interested...Amazon's Black Friday deals are already happening (they started yesterday as far as I know). I bought a Fire 10 tablet for my niece (an avid reader & streamer) for $50 off.

Besides, pork sausage these days isn't as fatty as it used to be. Some say that's a bad/sad thing. I pre-cook my mom's pork sausage for her Thanksgiving stuffing and there's barely any leftover fat in the pan when I'm done cooking it and storing it away in a container destined for the refrigerator.

Cornbread croutons work well with chili, too (turkey or otherwise). Yum.

Do you think the lack of fat or protein from the missing dairy impacted the recipe? As for the leftover cornbread, like you I was thinking cornbread croutons...for the stuffing/dressing or for salads. Or there's my usual answer...make a trifle with it. I was going to suggest using a nice pumpkin custard with it with chopped pecans, drizzled with a caramel sauce but the custard would have dairy in it so that would be a no-go.

Talk about the one that got away! "Lobzilla? Fear as fisherman finds giant claw from 'monster' lobster" The pictures of the claw are striking and scary. I'd hate to meet the lobster that lost the claw in a dark alley. Unless I was armed with a rather large pot of boiling water.

Wow. So it turns out that the United States Postal Service helped kill AmazonFresh. "Amazon reportedly blamed the U.S. Postal Service for AmazonFresh closures" I don't find this reason hard to believe. The current state of the USPS is horrible. Perhaps it was Amazon's bottom-line/cost that chose which delivery service would be used. Psst...Jeff Bezos...Cheapest ain't always the best.

Thanks. The tests are simple to do. Now I hope other ingredients I need from her pantry aren't too old (vegetable oil, peanut butter, etc).

Another Trader Joe's recall (cross-posted on the Trader Joe's discussion): "Trader Joe's salads recalled over possible glass fragments" Specific items being recalled can be found in the last few paragraphs. There is contact info at the end of the article should anyone have questions about the recall/items.

How do you test them? I will be starting my Mom's Xmas baking this weekend and I know I will encounter ancient "Best By" dates in her kitchen. Thanks!

Amazon announced two partnerships, one with AllRecipes.com and one with EatLove. Regarding AllRecipes.com: "Amazon and Allrecipes team up to take on Blue Apron’s meal kits" And regarding EatLove: "Amazon partners with EatLove to deliver personalized meals" I guess the main difference between the two is that EatLove will help you stick with your dietary restrictions, whereas the AllRecipes partnership will send you the all of the ingredients needed to make the recipe of your choice, without any exceptions regarding your dietary restrictions.

"Greek-style dip recall now includes two Trader Joe's products (photos, product numbers)" There's a list of the non-Trader Joe's items impacted by the recall at the bottom of the article. As an FYI...I've posted this in the "Food Recalls" discussion, as well.

I just got an email from Costco stating that they are starting "CostcoGrocery" (no space in the name). It will have Same-Day Delivery with a $35US minimum order...available in major cities. They also will have 2-day delivery with no delivery fee if you spend $75 or more. There's a FAQ on the Costco web site about this new delivery service. Looks like Amazon has some competition!

At the Aldi where I originally shopped, when you check out they just put everything back in your cart after it is scanned. Then off to the side is an area with a large shelf where you are supposed to bag the groceries in your cart. You're out of the way so if it takes a long time, it won't impact the check-out lines. It's a bit of a PITA to bag your own groceries, take the cart to your vehicle and put your groceries inside and then take the cart back to the front of the store so you can get your quarter back. Their carts are "linked" by a small chain to the cart in front of it. When you insert your quarter,in the shopping cart handle, this releases the chain link and allows you to take your cart and enter the store. If you're lucky someone will have left a cart in the parking lot near your car and you can push your cart into it, reconnect the "umbilical" chain to the other cart and out should pop your quarter.

A little follow-up to this morning's article from CNN: "Amazon is giving Whole Foods shoppers an early gift for the holidays" Two things of note: 1) This is Amazon's second announced wave of price cuts since buying Whole Foods. 2) From the article, here's (click) the Prime member page on Amazon's web site to get the cheaper organic turkey price at Whole Foods.

Techbargains.com had this special on a Bon Appetit subscription for $3.90US per year for up to three years. Here's the info: Click here for the link to Discount Magazines web site. The code for getting the low subscription price at checkout is TECHBARGAINS. I am unsure when this discount ends (it may be tonight).

"Organic turkeys are going to be a 'whole' lot cheaper this year, thanks to Amazon" Turns out that Amazon's Prime members are already getting price breaks at Whole Foods: Granted, these aren't the cheap prices we'll see for regular turkeys at our neighborhood grocery stores. But if you're adamant about buying an organic turkey, you'll pay less for it at Whole Foods this year.

Dudes and Dudettes...Costco is very responsive to consumer complaints. If you're not happy with the product, complain and complain loudly. Make sure they know they have a quality problem and that could mean negatively impacting their bottom line. It's likely the district manager/meat department switched meat suppliers to save money and they need to know that their current meat supplier sucks and they won't get your business unless the quality of the meat vastly improves.
