  1. This sounds interesting but I can't do it in the 28th. June 4th or the 11th work better for me.
  2. I met friends at Sambar for drinks and appetizers one night and thought it was fabulous. The drinks were a little on the high side, but not much higher than downtown locations and they are really good. We ordered only small plates so the prices didn't knock me out. I love the "feel" of the room. It was a cold when we were there so the french doors leading out to the patio were closed but I imagine on a warm evening they would be lovely.
  3. I love this place. Everytime I come to Vancouver (from Seattle) this is one of my stops. Alice and Allison (and Allison's boyfriend) are fabulous. My favorite thing to get is the Salt Spring Island goat cheese. Click here for their web site.
  4. I just finished The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kid. I loved this book and it made me crave all things southern and honey. I just started Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer.
  5. I made my waffles yesterday and, for the most part, really liked them. I had some leftover buttermilk so I used a combination of that and 1% milk. I think using the buttermilk made the waffles a little tangy for my taste. I also had a hard time combining the melted butter and the flour/yeast mixture. It was quite lumpy and didn't whisk out when the milk was added. Next time I will mix the butter and milk together then whisk it into the flour. I loved the way the house smelled as I was cooking them though! I'm going to make some fruit syrups when we start getting berries up here. What a treat to have during the summer.
  6. Thanks Mamster. I think I'll pick up the $20 version this weekend. I smell waffles in my future.
  7. Mamster, you've inspired me to make these. But let's talk waffle irons for a minute. Tell me more about the one you mention in your article. I have a small, two-waffle iron that I hate using because it is impossible to clean. If any of the batter seeps out the edges, it goes between the metal plates and the outer plastic shell. There is no way to remove the plates (that fact alone makes it difficult to clean) to get to the batter, so it just cooks in there becoming hard little pieces of waffle that rattle around inside. It drives me crazy. So I'm off to buy a new waffle maker to attempt this but I need to make sure I can sleep at night knowing I have cleaned it efficiently (at least enough so that nothing rattles)
  8. Chinooks has all you can eat fish and chips once a week. I think it's Mondays but give them a call. My Dad loves that place so I go there more than I care to. He always orders the fish and chips (but I still like Zestos better).
  9. I think the bar at Union is a fine place to dine alone. Jason (?) and Avel are great, friendly bartenders. As a matter of fact, both of them came from Shea's Lounge (Chez Lounge?). I haven't been to Shea's Lounge in a while, but it seems like it could be a fun place to dine alone. Portalis in Ballard is another good place to sit alone at the bar and dine. I have met some really fun and interesting people doing just that. Of course if I really want to just read while I eat, I try to scope out more casual, diner-like places. Varsity Inn, Rusty Pelican (both in Wallingford) and CJ's (Belltown) are some places I have been.
  10. Since you're staying at The Palomar you should at least go up to Fifth Floor for a cocktail. They make an awesome drink called a Bohemian. But, I agree with Squeat, the food is overpriced and overrated.
  11. I totally agree. It's been years since I've had them so maybe they've changed. But they used to be heavy and the batter laden with cornmeal. My favorite fish and chips are at Zesto's in Ballard. I love the tempura-like batter.
  12. We have milk delivery here in Seattle too.

    White or Red?

Red. If it's white, it's usually something along the lines of a riesling or a gewurztraminer with food only.
  14. I almost always ask for menus and haven't had the fun experience of a anyone "copping a 'tude". When our eGullet group went to Union last week, they brought us menus without even having to ask. In fact, like tighe, I even had one place offer to have the chef sign it. Sometimes I do feel a bit like a groupie.
  15. Interesting.......they both live in Northwestern Washington now.
  16. I have eaten there and it was fantastic. There's some reviews (including mine) Here.
  17. Welcome Adiabatic! I like The Fiddlers Inn too. They have good live music sometimes. I forget about it because it is not part of the regular route I follow.
  18. Thanks sequim! Mr Ledlund is very excited since he had to miss the dinner last week due to work. I'll be sure to post a full report.
  19. I've been reading this thread thinking "I don't remember any of these places from when I went to Western". Then I remembered that I left Western in 1993! It just feels like ten years ago!

    Corkscrews

I've never been able to get them to work. I always seem to push the cork down into the bottle as I'm rocking the metal shims between the bottle and the cork.
  21. Sorry, sort of an electric scooter thing. George used one on an episode of Seinfeld. Rascal's Web Site Edited to say that I don't know if he has a physical ailment that requires him to use this.
  22. At one point or another I think I had most of his books. I found that I rarely picked them up so I gave them away. As for what he is doing now, I live in Seattle and we see him on a regular basis, rolling around Belltown on his Rascal.
  23. Where it originated: Ugly Duckling My friend says the CD is hysterical. It's a concept album where the Meat Shake people argue with the Veggie Hut people.
  24. I love jambalaya and make it all the time. For me, it's got to be "popcorn rice" Popcorn Rice
