I don’t like asparagus. They have a bitter, lead like taste to me. The stink bugs around me are back. They were a major issue here back in the fall of 2007. My cubicle at the back then Honeywell HQ was by the door and I’d freak out because the stink bugs gravitated to me whenever the door was opened. Then it was wild turkey season. They’re plentiful here and MEAN. Hissing and squawking and are honestly intimidatingly large. When I worked late (which was often) I had security come and chase them away to get to my car. Are wild turkeys considered game? I mean these birds looked like ostriches in terms of weight. Besides not liking asparagus that much, blue cheese totally kills any dish that it’s snuck into for me. I’ve tried it in all types— salads, with figs, at Beechers, at Eataly, on a filet and it’s a hard no for me.

@gfweb same. Unless it’s chopped. Then I decide I’d love to adopt those kids (despite them having their own parents). The baking competitions are always a hard no from me. Food Network and HGTV are on a lot in our home. I find most of their shows calming and good background noise.

@suzilightning I know I can’t watch any of GGG now it’s too soon.

I know most members here don’t watch a lot of Food Network. I do, I leave it on in the background most days as I find it calming compared to say, the news or Jerry Springer. Carl was a huge personality. He lived well and did whatever sparked his interest, and did so passionately.

He was mostly notorious in Northern NJ, but recently opened a restaurant in Chelsea. He was on the Food Network mostly on Fieri’s shows. We interacted via social media. He had a strong presence IRL, and I’m pretty sad about it: https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/22/us/chef-carl-ruiz-death/index.html

This is a restaurant in and English speaking country/ region?

The thing is, we need to stop somewhere directly within a route from Palo Alto to the Sacramento area. We went to Napa last spring and are going to Sonoma this spring. I’m not hugely focused on vineyard/ winery visits as I’d imagine that week of thanksgiving will impact visiting hours. I’m looking for a town with some solid wines/ wine tastings/ rooms and good restaurants. Am I on the wrong track with Lodi?

Hot dogs made of random pork products, Taylor Ham and canned corn beef hash.

I don’t care what they do. Sometimes I want their dog food tacos and those Cinnabon bites. Those things are so so good.

I like McDonalds when I’m PMSing. Wasn’t there a thread about that? But if I want a fast food burger I lean towards 5 Guys first then Smashburger.

I’d think wonton wrappers would be too thin in a lasagna.

Both. I don’t eat organ meat at all. Includes foie but that’s both a taste and emotional issue for me.

As an owner of a golden retriever I am confident I wouldn’t never ever eat dog meat. Ever.

I will not eat veal. My father, who has heart issues and is allergic to poultry eats a lot of veal. I don’t eat lamb. Ironically if I had to pick a meat to live off it would be pork. I would never entertain the concept of eating horse. I’d rather starve to death than eat dog.

@robirdstx you’re a woman after my own heart! My mouth is still sore. 🙄 I ate half a piece of pizza and a mozzarella stick.

Oh dear. Today’s visit wasn’t too bad but I will need some type of gum surgery in the near future that will require sutures and a 10 DAY RECOVERY. Maybe I’ll lose a solid 10lbs? I’m thinking mashed potatoes and pudding. Softly scrambled eggs and chicken broth. For 10 (likely more I am a huge wimp) freaking days.

@Jacksoup thanks— I will consider both locations. I just... don’t want to go right from Palo Alto to my inlaws and sit around for days. I’d rather spend a couple of days exploring any area en route. My inlaws are Stanford fans, my husband played in the marching band at Cal. I’m a totally east coast girl but love experiencing the great agricultural areas of CA. On many levels. 😆

@Margaret Pilgrim if your dental team is in the SF bay area I could definitely visit twice annually. I do see my dentist 4 times a year. I am diligent about that and had a very traumatic experience with my pediatric dentist. I just have shit luck and I grind my jaw, you name it I’ve done it. I don’t like scotch; I actually avoid liquors. I may have to make an exception and mix some vodka with V8 or La Croix. I can get by easily on very little food (although I’m eating nachos right now because... I still can!) so even bouillon cubes in mugs can make a decent dinner for me. It’s not just the scaling, it’s the novacain that goes with it plus holding my child sized jaw open for over an hour that makes food difficult. I have a hand blender that works well but probably won’t have the energy to be in the kitchen. Maybe I’ll get a Panera bread bowl delivered depending on what soup they have tomorrow. Thanks for all the advice and well wishes!

What type of anti inflammatory? I want to go in asking as many questions as possible.

I’m sorry to be reviving this topic again. I have the *worst* oral luck. Ok maybe not the worst but it’s pretty bad. I’ve had two sets of braces and a handful of root canals plus a abscessed tooth that required an ora surgeon to remove it, then put a screw in my jaw and then the implant. 🙄 all of that to say, I’m getting my gums scaled tomorrow and I’m terrified as usual. I really should have made a lasagna today because I could gum it room temp but I didn’t. And plus, it’s *hot* here. I love and have gazpacho on hand but worry that the acid will make my soon to be even more sore gums worse. So I guess I can fall back on the newly labeled “soy sauce” top ramen or maybe a lightly grilled cheese on soft white bread? Any other suggestions? What’s worked for you in the past? I know better than to use straws or to wear anything very cold or hot. I wish my dentist could give me a wine IV along with Novocain and nitrous!

My husband and I will be in CA in November. We’re going out the weekend prior to Thanksgiving for the Big Game in Palo Alto (go Bears) and then will make our way to the Sacramento area to have thanksgiving with the inlaws. Some preliminary research shows Lodi would be a nice place to spend a couple days. It seems like there’s a lot of wineries, focusing on Zinfandel and good restaurants, etc. Would anyone from CA recommend this as a nice stop off before going to the in laws? Any recommendations for hotels and restaurants and what to do? Thanks in advance!

When we go away the pup goes to the kennel. I kind of hate it despite her having a private room with her own tv and her room is sound proof. She’s a “people” dog not a Dog’s dog. On topic, we will likely go back to SF and Danko for my 40th next March and also rent a home in Sonoma or Napa.
