    Craft

I have not been to Craft, so I'm a little confused. If, as you say, Craft has a certain "concept," doesn't it extend to everything on its menu? If so, why would there be right things and wrong things to order? That's what I thought too, but some items are slightly more "composed" rather than simply "prepared". As I understand it the concept has changed slightly from the original. A little less "do it yourself". Is this correct?

    Craft

I have only been once, but My meal and my wife's meals are are good example of what Craft does right and what they don't. My meal was a perfectly grilled Kobe Hanger steak, a side of perfect done chanterelles and a side of perfectly light and delicious gnocchi. I know I used the word perfect three times there, but that's the point. My wife's meal was a monkfish in a brothy sauce. The sauce was good, the monkfish was good, but together they didn't really work. I left raving about the place and she didn't get it.
  3. Might be the best bread service i have had. It was interesting that they would bring the basket to you and serve individual pieces. I felt like a fool asking for the basket about four times, but it was worth it.
  4. I picked up a habit a long time ago that I absolutely have to get out of the office for a little while and have a real lunch and read the Newspaper. My choices are normally: Big salad of some sort from the chain restaurant Champps (The salads are actually pretty darn good) Kabobs Pho A few small servings of different soups from the carry out at the nearby "Gourmet" place Sandwiches from the same Gourmet place Occasionally - Spicy Chicken Strips and Mashed Potatoes from Popeye's For me luch is all about getting out and ignoring work for a while and not having to talk to anyone after placing my order. It snaps me when someone asks "where are you going for lunch?" because that means that I end up having to talk with someone for 45 minutes instead of being quiet.
  5. I know what you mean. Anytime I eat more than nine or ten Kripy Kreams I start to feel a little queasy.
  6. To a list of good donuts at restaurants in the area I would need to add the refillable basket of goodies brought to your table at 2941's brunch. I could (and very nearly did) make a whole meal of those. It was last summer and I don't remember the details, but I think I remember them being raised sugar coated donut holes. Tender but crisp and not at all greasy on the outside and steamy on the inside.
  7. I was the neophyte who started this thread. I'm still a neophyte, but I know a little more now than I did when I arrived in Napa. THe highlight was the "Wine appreciation tour" at Joseph Phelps. We were lucky to be the only people on the tour which started with a tasting in their board room and continued on the patio overlooking the vineyards. Nice wine and nice, helpful staff. The tour at Mondavi was good for the process of winemaking and pretty informative.
  8. I lived in a house in college with two other guys. The first week we lived there the third guy (he was a last minute replacement for a buddy who flunked out) let his dishes pile up so long that they became infested with maggots. We got on him pretty hard about this and he started doing his share. About two months later he got back in the habit and he just wouldn't get around to it. So that Friday night while he was out on a date we put his dirty dishes in his bed. When he came home (with his date in tow) and they "went to bed" he was none too pleased. But he did do his dishes from then on. Although at the end of the year he stiffed me for about $300 on the utilities - he was a real prick.
  9. Try the Pulled Pork or Ribs too. They're very good too.

  11. Isn't that called Zagat's? Edit - I guess I should have kept reading. I should know that I can't ever have an origianl thought around here.
  12. Those are some interesting pairings.

    Zuni Cafe

I agree - give it a shot. I am hardly a regular, living on the other coast, but I regretted not having a chance to return on my last visit to SF. On my one trip there, I remember a perfectly done hangar steak, the caesar salad and a bowl of creamy polenta that was the best I have ever had.
  14. Thanks for the heads up on that. Something to avoid in the future.
  15. At Chipotle you can get either a burrito, three soft tacos or a bowl, which is everything served (duh) in a bowl (presumably for the atkins people).
  16. Grrr! are you rubbing it in? You really should consider that one. I purchased my Hattori from the same seller. Read the conditions down below -- she doesn't rule out shipping outside the US, just asks for an email first. Not unreasonable. And that's a damn good price for that knife. Chad i KNOW it is!!!! grrr! gotta wait till i get paid for some big project first. GRRRR..i want i want!! it is an extremely good price for a Hattori I saw several similar Hattori knives on eBay last month for about the same price, so keep looking when you are ready.
  17. I can undertand using Coke or Sprite or Dr. Pepper (Mr. Pibb Xtra? in Coke world) for the sweetness and even the flavor. But why in the world would you use Diet Coke or Diet Coke with Lemon or anything diet for that matter. I drink Caffein Free Diet Coke or Diet Sprite almost every day, but I couldn't imagine that they would add anything to the taste of a dish except the taste of Diet Coke or Diet Sprite and / or artificial sweetness. This made me shudder: You are already adding honey to the dish so the reason for using the diet soda is not caloric. I would rather make that with regular Coke and Lemon Juice.
  18. A marketing buddy once told me that Wegman's invented the grocery store shopper's card. Don't know if that's true or not. Can anyone confirm?
  19. I'm down with that.
  20. How did I pass the time at work before eGullet?
  21. That shopping spree should cover at least my first two trips there.
  22. In restating the problem the way you did, I wonder if the problem isn't an eGullet problem, but a problem inherent in this type of forum. The one thing I will say for eGullet is that I appreciate the fact that the back and forth and argument and off-topic discussions are tolerated. That is what has kept me coming back for almost a year.

    More stirfrys

I have one of the Le Creuset Woks and it is only enameled on the outside.
  25. I respect people making their own choices about food, but I don't want them to disrepect my choices. If you want to try to convert me to being a Vegan (or convince a Vegan to eat meat) don't tell me why eating meat is bad. Tell me why not eating meat is good. (does that make any sense?)
