  1. I still remember the smell that came out of that box a month later. I have to imagine the whole restaurant smelled like that when you were there. Was the pricing the same as standard? The supplement for the Risotto we had was $40 (!?!?) just for the one dish. Or are they trying to use up the truffles before they leave for New York?
  2. The recent thread about the Wine Spectator list and the new post by Craig Camp about the San Francisco Chronicle list have made me curious as to why there is such distate for wine lists and ratings. As a novice wine drinker I have little to no idea of where to start in selecting wines aside from sources like this and what I read here on eGullet. I want to do more than say - "Oh that's a pretty looking bottle, and its not too cheap or too expensive - let's go with that one." So in looking at these lists, along with the descriptions that accompany them, wouldn't that give me some idea of places to start? Obviously, the more you learn about wine the more you can make your own decisions, but couldn't these be helpful for me and my fellow beginners? Or is there something else I should be looking for?
  3. Do you mean Manner Wafers from Austria? Link here: http://www.buonappetitony.com/html/cookies/manner.asp my favorites are lemon and hazelnut. ps. those do sound like something I would snag at the last minute and then eat in the car... Since I usually bought those at a german deli/meat store, made me think of something else to buy and eat a la minute. Little pre-cooked hot dogs at a german deli; hard to resist after being engulfed in the absolute best yummy smell of a german deli. That's them. I like Lemon and Vanilla. I'm not a huge chocolate fan so I haven't tried the chocolatty ones. But right now I think I'll go have a big chunk of the worlds largest custom imprinted Chocolate Bar our office recieved as a gift. Thanks.
  4. At my local "Gourmet" store I can't not buy at least one, maybe two packages of the European version of what I grew up knowing as "Sugar Wafers". Back in the day thy came in and came in artifical Chocolate, artifical Strawberry and artifical Vanilla. I can't for the life of me thing of the brand name, but they come in Vanilla, Lemon, Raspberry and Chocolate Hazelnut
  5. This is all making me excited about my upcoming visit there this Thursday.

    Ceiba

It's there now. Not quite as glowing as I would have expected. My entree when I went was the Pork shank - it was a little "monotonous" as he described, but it was a really hearty filling monotony.

    Ceiba

Just a little premature. Link works but reviews not there quite up yet - at least on my corner of the 'net.
  8. All this talk of the Thai market has me wondering if there is one in Northern VA. Silver Spring is the oterh end of the world coming from Loudon County. I'm really looking for fresh noodles, not the dried ones. Any suggestions?
  9. I have to throw my support behind the Turkish Delight at Zaytinya (and the support of my wife - its her favorite dessert anywhere). I particularly like the Goat's milk Yogurt mousse that comes with it.
  10. Probably like Subway bakes their bread. I doubt they have huge bowls of starter and rising dough in each location.

    Ginger Altoids

When I first graduated I had friends working for Nestle and Frito Lay. I ate more half melted $100,000 Bars and Sun Chips than I knew what to do with.
  12. Another that I haven't tried, but have heard good things both here and offline is the "New" Vidalia.
  13. Since you've been to a lot of these - What about going someplace nice that you have already been to - maybe on a previous anniversary? I know this is difficult for us - my wife is always disappointed when we find a restaurant we like because she knows I won't go back for a long time, regardless of how good it was, so we can try new places.
  14. Colvin Run is probably appropriate but I have never really heard great things about it.
  15. Jason, I think you lost him long before "Suck my Fucking Dick."
  16. the success of threads like this one does partially explain the popularity of the non-cooking shows like top 5 etc. on the food network (i think i recall people wondering about that in another thread). Yeah - except this is entertaining and Bobby Rivers is thankfully nowhere to be seen.
  17. I think I heard the same CD when we were at Babbo.
  18. Diner: Could I see your wine list? Waiter: Oh - we have both types - Red and White
  19. Exactly - if I wanted homemade I'd rather have it from my home anyway.
