  1. I m not really that worried as I am just sad about leaving behind all my favorite cheeses. and desserts well, if any of you know me, they are a huge part of my meals! I never really ate a lot of red meat, maybe lamb at my aunts house, mmm grilled lamb,,,,,,,,,,, if i dont see any grand difference after two months, i will go back to eating organic cheeses. but i dont plan on eating any more meat, be it chicken, cow, pig etc and i m not sure how i feel about fish right now,,,,, i never really knew that fisherman kill dolphins due to their netting and it concerns me,,,,,,,,, anyways, i m excited and nervous at the same time, either way it will be an interesting food adventure for a girl who has often ordered 2 or 3 desserts in a meal,,,,,,,,,, Lauren
  2. Well, some of you wont believe this, but as of Monday I am going Vegan for 2 months to see if any of my healthy problems can be alleviated. So, basically I have been indulging in all my favorite places til sunday. Last night I went to Wallse. Started off w. a blood orange cosmo which i always find refreshing. On Chef Kurts recommendation, i ordered the white asparagus wiht ham and a creamy type sauce. I ll be honest, they didnt blow me away, i m not sure how different they are supposed to taste from regular green ones, but tehy were great and fresh Next I had the Cod strudel which was so delicous. the love pastry dough so that coupled with the fresh cod was brilliant. There were also some great fresh veggies. and anotehr sauce that i dont know. Dessert was the quark dumplings with a strawberry rhubard compote, strawberry- verbena soup and strawberry sorbet it was so wonderful. Tonight i m going to Danube for a couple of things and tomorrow to aka cafe for their huevos rancheros that i love and sunday, INO and Chikalious,,,,, I know its only 2 months, but it sounds like a lifetime,,,,, at least its summer with lots of fresh veggies and fun sorbet wish me luck! lauren
  3. I m sorry but I have to completely disagree with everyone who thinks that Starbucks is a great addition to Paris or Europe. They still serve the same overpriced crappy coffee that they do over in the US and they still dont pay their bean growers enough money. I d love to know what they actually pay their baristas in the states, probably not enough though.... Starbucks is no different than any other greedy corporate chaiin trying to sink its teeth into some more money. I remmeber how sad i was in Prague years ago when I went to this one area and it was literally, a Burger King, Chilis. TGIF's and pizza hut in a row. It will be interesting to see how all these other cultures will be affected by our disgusting food. We are seriously promoting our bad habits abroad. great job USA! AT least they use their own meat and not our really great and healthy FDA approved meat....
  4. today is my last day here and i am terribly sad to leave i walked from monmarte to the louvre; on my way i relized that i was near the new starbucks; as i walked around; i was relieved to have not seen it and then i turned the corner and saw that freaky green wavy woman aka the starbucks sign; it was disturbingly PACKED; i went in a promptly filled out a complaint form; actually filled out about 12 of them. i tried to listen to conversations aruond me;; to see if the crowd was american tourists or the french:most then were french however; there was one table near me w; americans; they were gettng up and i couldn t help but ask them why they had chosen to go there when there were so many cozy little places to get cheaper not to mention better coffee: the guy who answered said that he was "collecting paris starbucks mugs" OOHHHH the shame can i say the he had a definate southern twang when he spoke or is that Southern prejudice?? FELICE it was so great to meet you; i think that i ll be back at Xmas time!!!
  5. At one of my first jobs in NYC I was showing some people the space for a party. This was not their first visit. In fact the bride and groom to be had seen it and this trip was to show the space to the sister. As we were going very some details, they both looked at eachother in a mixture of shock and god knows what, and then calmly said, there is a mouse over there. To my complete horror, a small little mouse was crawling, and rather slowly i might add, across the floor. I dont think that I have ever been so speechless in my entire life. Words like > " well that doesnt happen often " crossed my mind, but in the end all i could do was apologize,,,,,,,,, needless to say they didnt book their $20,000
  6. Just wanted to announce, if not already done so that Jean George's steak house in the Mall of NYC, V Steakhouse, had its soft opening last night My boss went there last night and siad that the space was quite beautiful lots of deep reds and gold tones. Her and her friend shard a filet, a sirloin, tempura potatos and she reported back that everything was good, but not the best that she has had in NYC. Also, I was told recently that JG is in the midst of opening something else in NYC.! I dont know about you guys, but it seems like he is spreading himself way too thing! i guess we ll see what happens. I hope everyone has a great holiday, i m off to Paris tonight:))) yeah! see you when i get back Lauren
  7. I am so happy to hear that that was their response and though I am not surprised bc Grace and Jack are so wonderful, it does make me happy to hear that is what they said! will you go back again anytime soon?
  8. Do to reasons that I can not disclose right now, I have decided NOT to dine at ADPA, i have a table for one this friday at 8pm, I am going to cancel it unless someone else would like to take it. IF i dont hear back on Thurs, by 5pm Paris time i m going to cancel it! Now I get to find a new place to go, i guess i ll go back and read over the thread again! cheers lauren
  9. also Hangawi is amazing, they have vegetarian and vegan, Its Korean though. The space is absolutely transporting! its on 32nd and madison.
  10. THere is a newish place in the east village/alphabet city called Counter, they have vegetarian and vegan entrees. I saw the menu and eventhough I love meat, I would try eating there. The space is very chic and the menu is pretty creative,,,, dont know the exact address, but you can do a search on citysearch and find it!
  11. Just had to post that I had a wonderful experience at Gotham Bar and Grill. Honestly i have always loved GB&G. I sometimes go there just to get a dessert. Not all of them sounded too interesting, they had a passion fruit souffle, stolen from Blue HIll? i wonder!! I had a pineapple financier with brown sugar icecream and pineapple semifreddo. The financier was a regular one with a nice roasted pineapple on top, paired with the cool creamy brown sugar icecream was a prefect match. I didnt love the semifreddo, i dont know why, just didnt hit my taste buds the right way,,,, they had some great aps of the menu and i tasted my neighbors bone marrow custard which was quite nice ok back to work L
  12. On tues night i passed by one of my favorite bars to see a big FOR RENT sign in the window. Bar D'O on bedford and downing was a cute lounge y bar. it had been there for at least 7 yrs if not more. I m so sad:( oh well
  13. I passed by Chickpea last night and it looked great. The place was packed and I didnt go in to look at the menu, but i d like to check it out. I espeically liked the hewbew spelling of chickpea below the english. I have to say that I at St Marks place after a show at the now defunct Coney Island High with a certain band member so I had some feelings towards the place, but I dont recall the pizza being great at all oh well, out wiht the old in with the new! Lauren
  14. I first at at MK a number of years ago and fell in love with the shrimp salad iwth the champagne vinaigrette. Other than that and the kinda cool space, nothing there is that impressive, On another note, I worked there very briefly as a reservationist and i Can tell you first hand that its amazing that the place is still running. The managers there have no idea what they are doing and the GM is an absolute wreck, never returned phone calls ect. I think i worked there at total of 10 days before i walked out. I m amazed that JG could have a place run by such idiots when he has such restaurants that clearly are run properly and efficiently.
  15. I don t know about limelights history prior to 1998, but in the years that i ve lived here its closed about 5 times, I was there prior to all the bottle service/vip crap and it had its moments bc you could get completely lost, plus they had really cool bathrooms that you could see through,,,,, I m assuming most of you know that Palladium is now the name of yet another NYU dormitory,,,,,,,,,,, not a huge surprise since they snatch up every piece of land they can, thank god they didnt get to make that tall montronsity that wouldve towered over washington square,,,,,, greedy $*)#_ corporation!
  16. Mother was purchased by an Alum of the club and is now FILTER 14, one of the best small underground dance music venues in the city. In some ways if not entirely it keeps the off-kilter soulful vibe of Mother going. Filter will probably be open another few years. Check it out when you can. Good fun. SPA/SYSTEM//KEY CLUB in all its many guises was always pretty much an NYU/tourist trap playing bad music to go with overpriced drinks. -MJR well if you re talking about Spa on 13th and bway, thats now called Plaid.
  17. I live several blocks from August and passed by on a recent weekend. The brunch menu looked delicous, creative takes on old classics. anyways, i plan to check it out soon and i ll report back!
  18. (Admin: merged into main thread) Seeing as this is a food board, I would say that there is some relevance to this movie here. I saw the movie last friday at Angelika and the director was there to answer questions. The documentary was funny, full of facts and very entertaining. I highly recommend it! Has anyone else seen it yet? Apparently 1/4 people is obese now, scary stuff.
  19. woohoo!! my friend Allison won best rising chef! that is so great!
  20. Just wondering if anyone went last night,,,,,, Ya roo?? anyone know who won? Lauren
  21. I went to one very fun show at Coney Island High when I was 20 and had great memories. I think that I went into shock when I saw what they were building there on St. Marks.
  22. Yes it most certainly did. when i first moved here 6 yrs ago, my first NY New Years eve was spent there, it was totally insane but very fun-the place was huge and and maze like and the bathrooms were strangely coed and you had to pass the guys at the urinals to get to the stalls,,,,,,,,, ironically, i ve only spent 2 ny eves in the city since then!
  23. Mother in the meatpacking district,,,,,, i believe it was on west 14th ,, they had tons of diffent nights,,,,,,,,, including Jackie 60 which was supposedly a blast though i never go to go to that one,,,,,, they lost their lease the summer of 2000,,,,,, imagine that, i think theres some store there now, bummer. Tunnel had its moments too,,,,,,,
  24. i stopped by Megu last night after a quick bite at Danube. I have to be honest, I really wasnt that impressed by the space. Certainly they spent a lot of money on the place, but I found it to be way too much, especially the ice sculpture with the fire underneath. I had to check out the bathrooms after jgoodes and bond girls posts, all i can say is that for the few minutes that i was there, my sinuses were momentarily cleared, but my eyes stung like hell. Also its a bit confusing, on my way back to the exit, i ended up on the downstairs floor- oh and very loud and the people there were very um, interesting. I personally dont think that it will do that well once the "novelty" has worn off,,,,, though some of the people that eat there, dont care about the food anyway, i guess we ll have to wait and see,,,,,,,,
