Matthew: Eeew. Maggie: I don't get cottage cheese either. Especially when subbed for ricotta. Yuck.

Grilled or broiled (steak, chicken, sausages, burgers, etc.) with salad and bread. Or takeout.

Now that's an attractive idea for a thread. If you must know my whole family suffers (?) from it. It's a treat changing the kid's diapers after an asparagus meal. Probably genetic, like tasters and supertasters.

I could not have said this any better myself. Things I don't get: Ketchup on hot dogs. Mustard, always mustard. Ice cream on pie. Why make a good pie soggy? Ditto cake.
-
Wasn't there a steak flavored chip? I remember it from about 10 years ago, maybe more. No idea who made it, but it was GOOD. So was the hot dog with mustard flavor. Utz's Carolina Barbecue flavor. Tastes like what you'd get if you crossed BBQ and salt & vinegar chips. The new "Natural" Lay's with sea salt. OK, I'm trying to do Atkins right now so I'm just gonna get off this topic.

The Hard Times Cafe's chili is pretty well know as being Cincinnati style. Ground Beef and lots of flavors, including cinnamon. I prefer a 5-way myself. Beer is essential.

There's a local (DC area) chain called the Hard Times Cafe that specializes in Cincinnati-style chili macs. I can only handle that about once a year.

I would happily order these things for my kids. Emma would particularly like the trout and smoked scallops. Thanks Bux. When we get to France with the kids at least we'll know they will be accomodated. -
Elizabeth, I was raised on tuna with Miracle Whip and sweet pickle relish - the horror! - and still make that sometimes when I'm feeling nostalgic. So don't worry about your recipe. Post away!

I'll put it on my calendar. Uh, we are all invited, right?
-
Where does a place like Quiznos fit into that equation? Or Cosi? I've never been to either of them, but they seem to be positioning themselves as a step up. Is the burrito a thing of the past? Seems here in DC burrito joints were a dime a dozen a couple of years ago. That idea seemed like a winner - reasonably fresh ingredients and easy to customize - but (Chipotle aside) it seems like it's peaked. Too small a niche?

Do restaurants in other countries have "children's menus" or just smaller portions of the regular entrees? What's the story? -

We've taken Emma to Jaleo and she had a great time. She was intrigued by the idea of getting all sorts of little things. We haven't been to Zaytinya with the kids but will in the near future. And yes, the family style thing is why we wind up in asian places so often, although there are a couple of spaghetti and meatballs type places around here that serve that way too. -

Legal Seafood has a good children's menu. In addition to the usual suspects it's possible to get grilled salmon, steamed broccoli, and mashed potatoes or rice (Emma's favorite meal) for your l'il darlins. They also feature fresh cod fish sticks. LS is just about the best kid's menu we've found, and we eat out a lot. Also notable is a local chain called Rio Grande Cafe - their menu has quesadillas, chicken and steak fajitas, and enchiladas in pint-sized portions. I would love to see some places at a higher price point offer inventive kid's meals, but I suspect this doesn't happen because families aren't the target audience for fine-dining establishments. -
I always buy tuna packed in olive oil. Diced celery, good quality mayo, cornichons, maybe some onion, large chunks of tuna.

Now I understand why you're so tired all the time! -
I love diced cornichons in tuna. Now, hard boiled egg in tuna salad is another issue. Whose idea was that anyway?

It was a huge treat for my siblings & me to get a Shirley Temple whenever we went out to eat - Soda! And it's pink! And a maraschino cherry! I remeber feeling so grown up when the waiter brought my drink and set it on a cocktail napkin. Does anyone still order those? We usually order milk or lemonade for Emma (age 4) and just milk for Ian, but only because they are still a little young to be drinking soda. -

Damn straight! Good article, Dean. This is a constant source of frustration for us, and why we so often wind up eating at Asian restaurants where we can just feed the kids whatever we're eating. -
I have tears in my eyes...that was beautiful.

Scott and I looked at our respective calendars and realized that we can't go. That's the week of my brother's wedding. I have a feeling we'll be a little busy. Maybe next time, folks. Actually, many of you will be at Varmint's, right? So we'll see you there.

Welcome to egullet, madam and jenny! Where is Fireflies? Never heard of it.

If you have some counter space available, it's no trouble to stick a marble slab on top of it. We've got a slab that sits on the counter and it works well. What I really want is a dedicated baking station lowered for easier kneading, etc.

What I have read suggests that it's impossible for most children, given their small stomachs and small appetites, to consume enough whole grains for proper nutrition. Enriched bread with low fiber will not contribute to malnutrition.
-
Thanks for the reference, Jaz, I will have read that book again. Many child nutrition reference books, including the popular What To Expect series, recommend way too much fiber for small children.
