  1. I'd pick up the tab at the first place we go if I can see Varmint in a skirt. My thoughts exactly.
  2. This is my favorite post of the week. I have no food memories from the 80's (well, except for Chinatown very late at night), but recall that wine coolers were a new hot thing back then. Let me dig out some of my Gourmet mags from back then and see what was popular.
  3. I've had a couple of nice meals at the hotel restaurant there. Market Street Grill, I think.
  4. She was. In was an informative documentary on the history of alcohol. Your offspring will be fantastic drinkers now. Was there any question about that outcome?
  5. When Scott was working from home he did most of the cooking. He was raised by a single mom who encouraged him to learn how, and he's good at it. Now that he's commuting again I do most of the cooking, but he always does the dishes. He's definitely not chore-averse. He scrubs the bathrooms because it doesn't bother him but he knows I hate it.
  6. I'm envious...
  7. Chef Gillian, thanks so much for addressing that. I'm not really sure what the fuss was about. Aren't you the one that went to culinary school, conceived of the restaurant, creates the food, calls the shots, hires/fires, and signs the paychecks? Why the hell shouldn't you be called Chef? I am not one to leap to conclusions like this, but if you had been a man would it have attracted any attention?
  8. Right on! Do you have a specific kid's menu, or do you offer small portions of regular menu items? Most children's menus are so disgusting that we often order an adult entree and split it between our children.
  9. I have to confirm what he is saying. I now remember going to Felix's in Houston with my grandfather. Yep! It was saltines. Not tortilla chips. Fifi, I went to El Patio last month and they still serve saltines there.
  10. I love them too. Nowadays they're usually topped with sardines in mustard sauce, but as a kid we spread them with butter and a little sprinkle of sugar. Crunchy buttery sweet and salty. Mmmmmmm. And we crumbled them liberally into any kind of soup. I have two small kids and Nabisco Saltines are always in the house. Priscilla, we have pork chops for dinner tonight. I'm going to try the saltine coating.
  11. Annie's Shiitake Sesame Vinaigrette Newman's Own of some sort, maybe Olive Oil & Vinegar? Jalapeno Ranch dressing, purchased at Whole Foods (Scott came home with this one day. It's unopened) Naturally Fresh Blue Cheese Whole Foods brand Lemon Tahini
  12. What a gorgeous sandwich! I look forward to this blog. Your kids are close to mine in age, so maybe I can pick up a few new meal ideas. I recall from long ago that one or both of your kids have food allergies, or sensitivities. How did you find out and what kind of dishes are out of bounds for them?

    Honey

Tupelo, buckwheat, and local wildflower honey. Best drizzled over hot cornbread or fluffy biscuits. My kids eat buckwheat honey on their oatmeal.
  14. Longer than that even. I didn't bother tuning in. Who were the guests?
  15. I was at the same store hillvalley was at today and picked up The Joy of Pickling and Rosengarten's Taste.

    Pickle recipes

The Joy of Pickling is great. I finally broke down and bought it after checking it out from the library over and over again. We've got pickled cauliflower in the fridge right now - it will be ready to eat tomorrow.
  17. Sorry! I'd invite you over to finish the leftovers, but it's not something that keeps well. The kids had some with blueberry jam after dinner.
  18. I didn't get any sausage, or chicken wings. Of course, that's only because I had a double helping of pork. What a delicious butt. PS no one has mentioned the sangria yet. My glass of it was the highlight of my afternoon.
  19. Seriously, we had a great time today. Thanks to Busboy and Mrs Busboy for organizing. We should do it again very soon.
  20. See you at the park. We have cole slaw, 2 potato salads, and 2 pans of cornbread. Scott is joining us and we will be bringing destructo boy.
  21. Do people really do this? I will open a box and give my son a cracker while we're shopping, but I always pay for it. And I never feed my kids anything sold by the pound while shopping.
  22. As if. Glass houses and all that. I hope we can do an outdoor thing. If it's moved indoors I will leave destructo boy at home with my mom.
  23. OK, corn bread is a go. Sweet or not? I'm a yankee so I grew up eating sweetened corn bread but I'd be happy to make it the Southern way if more folks prefer it.
  24. Anyone want cornbread to go with the pork and cole slaw?
