  1. Yes, Natty Bo was about all you could get at Memorial stadium. Blech! We used to drink a beer an inning and they got easier to choke down after the first two. Didn't the owner of the team own the brewery too? It wouldn't surprise me. The food and beer at Camden Yards is so much better than at Memorial Stadium. Too bad it's the best reason to go see the Orioles. I seem to recall that National Premium (affectionately known as Preemies) was also for sale at Memorial. It was equally nasty.

  3. Oh, my god. I had repressed the memory of that beer until reading all the entries on this thread. We used to buy a case of Olympia apiece to take to the Preakness Stakes every year. "It's the water" indeed. Gack.
  4. The rotating thing for frozen pizza? My husband and I saw a commercial for it and thought it was a joke. Anyone seen the Chef Wizard? It's supposed to take the place of all those messy untensils cluttering up the kitchen.

    It's Sunday

That sounds fabulous! I may have to make that for my next brunch. What kind of goat cheese?

    It's Sunday

Buttermilk waffles, applewood smoked bacon, orange juice, coffee, the Washington Post, and for my daughter, a Wiggles tape. I want a BLT too, but we ate all the bacon.
  7. Has "buttery" been mentioned yet? Buttery, unctuous and silken get my votes.
  8. Do you mean to say that those of us who live in the suburbs don't know any better? As for missing Phyllis Richman - it's kinda nice to have a restaurant reviewer that doesn't include the word "buttery" in every write-up.

    Yogurt

Plain or flavored? Brown Cow is yummy, either plain or fruit flavored. It's a cream-on-top, so you have to stir it up. I buy Stoneyfield Farms too, but only the whole milk or lowfat. Their lemon non-fat is ok, but I'm not a non-fat yogurt fan usually.
  10. Check out Normandie Farm, if you're ever in Potomac MD. They still serve hot popovers.
  11. I had forgotten, well repressed the memory of, a place I used to frequent near the U of Maryland called the Rondezvous Inn, or the 'Vous as everyone called it. Wearing boots was a must because there was usually an inch of beer on the floor, and one could occasionally see frat guys using the space between pinball machines as a urinal.
  12. I liked Troublegum, but haven't kept up since then.
  13. I made these last night and they're half gone already. Delicious!
  14. What band?
  15. ah, duh. i missed the "old" bit in hjshorter's post. Yeah, they have a new club, but it's sort of the Disney version of the 9:30: too clean, not much beer on the floor, no punk bands, mostly up-and-coming "alternative" stuff. No atmosphere at all.
  16. Heh, my husband grew up in New Orleans and says that Bourbon street is by far the vilest the morning after Mardi Gras. Just unbelievably disgusting.
  17. Kids these days, they got no respect... Here in DC, the rankest bar I ever frequented was the old 9:30 Club. The back bar had a vile aroma, sort of a stale beer/vomit/sweat amalgam. The club closed a few years ago, and the building has since been torn down, but I swear the smell is still there.
  18. Me! I'm usually ready for lunch by 11. My kids are up at the crack of dawn, so breakfast is very early, between 6 and 7. If I waited until 12 or 1 for lunch I'd be dying of hunger. The kids are in bed by 7, so we eat dinner around 5 or 5:30. My husband works at home so we don't have to plan meals around a commute.
  19. Gack, I forgot about pulp! It gives me the willies. Disgusting.
  20. My husband and I bought some durian filled cookies once out of curiousity. They smelled so bad that we threw them away, and then took out the trash immediately. I have since had fresh durian and liked it, but on the whole I'm not a fan of stinky food with the exception of a couple of cheeses.
  21. I was never a picky eater. I remember disliking only two foods: raw green peppers, and a hideous seafood casserole my mother made with Campbell's Cream of Shrimp soup. The thought of it still makes me gag. My mom was a pretty good cook aside from that one casserole. I outgrew the pepper dislike early on. There were plenty of foods I grew tired of eating, and to this day I can't stand eating leftovers. We didn't exactly live high on the hog when I was a kid, and every meal was divided and served again that same week. Blech.

Sure! The recipe is from Penelope Casas' Tapas. I'll look it up and add it to the thread. It's fabulous!
  23. I agree, and I have let my subscription to Gourmet lapse, along with Bon Appetit (or Gourmet Lite). We get Cook's Illustrated, and it's OK, but sometimes I could just care less about their 5 billionth try at making the perfect potato salad, you know? Fine Cooking isn't a fascinating read, but has provided recipes that are interesting and taste good. I'm another person who probably should like Saveur, but just can't get interested in it.

Baking powder biscuits. I think they're one of the reasons my husband married me. Whenever I serve them they're gone before they have time to cool down. A potato salad with fresh orange juice and dill, and an orzo salad with ginger oil and apricots. I have brought these to innumerable parties and never have anything to take home afterwards.
  25. We ordered a great wooden peel from Bowery Kitchen Supply. It's not 5 feet long, but it's pretty darn big. Unless you have a wood-burning oven in your home (boy I wish I did) a wooden peel should be all you need.
