  1. With this, I concur.
  2. While I can't help you in regards to stores in Santa Barbara, if you happen to find yourself in the Thousand Oaks area (50-some miles away, I know), you can find Laird's at Total Wine: http://www.totalwine.com/StoreList.aspx?state=CA&store=1107 I'm looking at their Summer 2011 Buying Guide, and they have Laird's Apple Jack for $16, and Laird's Old Apple Brandy for $57. They also have a decent enough Calvados selection, Domaine Dupont being my favorite (~$35 to $70). Note that Total Wine is just as "corporate" as BevMo, but at least they have better prices and selection! And, the way they're expanding in California, chances are that a Total Wine will be coming to your area soon enough...
  3. Was it in Post No. 12 in this thread?
  4. On a related note, I don't know if I'll ever get around to building my dream brick oven in the backyard. That first pizza will cost a fortune!
  5. A little tidbit I remember from (I think) Alton Brown: Popcorn works better than rice as a de-clumper, and doesn't ever really need to be replaced. Not that I would know...
  6. This "study" (*cough* press release *cough*) has been brought to you by InSinkErator®, the world's leading manufacturer of food waste disposers.
  7. You're not alone -- there's a whole cottage industry!
  8. That's funny -- I just bought a Cuisinart 1.5 qt machine at Costco for $24 plus tax. Couldn't see dealing with the hassle of ice and salt
  9. When I was installing our tile backsplash, I actually removed the wall cabinets (the 'uppers') and re-hung them at 19" off the surface of the countertops. We also have one rogue cabinet that clocks in at 25" off the countertop! That was mainly for aesthetic reasons (so that the top was inline with some pantry cabs), but it turns out that we like all that clearance under there. You do need a step ladder to get to the top shelf, though...
  10. You need to add 'rip' to your list

    Kaki Fruit

    Heidi is correct -- it's a persimmon.

    Warm Mayonnaise

Well, if you're paranoid, toss it. Your wife's peace of mind may be worth the 3 or 4 bucks... But you should know that there's nothing inside an unopened jar of mayo that could spoil in that time frame. However, as soon as you introduce foreign bodies (food particles) into that jar, and then put it into a warm car, you now have a Petri dish made for growing all kinds of junk!
  13. Yes... that is why the AP comes with a stirring paddle to ensure complete contact. FWIW, I have a Yama vacuum brewer -- it just doesn't get much use when one rolls out of bed early in the morn'. The AP is definitely more user-friendly (and quick).
  14. Nothing to offer regarding bamboo, but have you looked into the AeroPress? http://www.google.com/search?q=aeropress+site%3Aegullet.org http://coffeegeek.com/forums/coffee/machines/212810?Page=1
  15. I agree with Chris: They're useful for avoiding the dreck, and for providing a list available products in a particular segment. As with all things, YMMV, chacun à son goût, etc.
  16. BOOO! It's 6:11PM Pacific Daylight Time, and here I am posting on eG. Guess I just ate all that jamón ibérico de bellota, from my favorite local Spanish deli, for nothing!
  17. No, there's potato starch, and then there's katakuri starch.
  18. The way I understand it is the poor souls left behind on Sunday will be living in "Hell on Earth." That's when I'll be diving into the devil's food cake
  19. The Almighty Vegeta.
  20. Based on this list [click] , I'd say they're candy, and therefore would concur with Mitch (Circus Peanuts make me wish eG had a :hurl: emoticon.)
  21. MAPP gas, when not on sale, can be up to four times as expensive as propane. MAPP gas can have a notable odor when burning, which theoretically could be passed to the surface of the food. MAPP gas is toxic if inhaled in an unburnt state. http://egullet.org/p974504 MAPP gas is overkill in the kitchen. Stick with propane.
  22. I've played many, many, MANY hours of Tetris. Nothing I like better than strategically moving a sink-full of dishes to the dishwasher
  23. English is usually Assam blended with other black teas (Ceylon, Kenyan, etc.). I believe Irish is predominantly, or sometimes solely, Assam.

  25. Unfortunately, the conversion rate goes in the other direction -- JPY1580 is nearly USD20 I enjoyed the pics, though, as I have many happy memories of strolling through Tokyo neighborhoods...
